Not really pirate games per se, but there are two promising naval indie games about whale hunting that I'd like to share.
Nnatucket (Picaresque Studio) is a strategy seafaring game set around the 1820s, heavily inspired by Moby Dick (it can be considered kind of a sequel, as you can play as Ismael if you so choose). You have to hire and manage a crew with different specialisations, upgrade your ship and of course sail around the world in pursuit of whales to fill your hold with precious oil, all while fending off pirates and dealing with different events that pop up during your voyage. It has a tabletop-like combat system for both whale hunting and pirate-fighting, with card decks and dice. It's already in its closed beta phase and will be releasing shortly, one would expect.
This next one, on the other hand is still very early in development, I discovered it today precisely through Picaresque's twitter account....
A new version of New Horizons Remastered has just been released on Itch.io, bringing a few new features, improvements and fixes that add a bit of polish to the experience. Read on for the highlights!
Dynamic Sky and Weather
We've added the Tenkoku Dynamic Sky asset to the game, which produces spectacular skies and weather effects on the fly. It features a full day/night transition, which we've set to an accelerated rate for this build so you can experience the full cycle in a short time. A longer cycle will be introduced in the next release....
Today, I'm very excited to reveal New Horizons Remastered; a new project to immortalise our much-loved New Horizons mod for PotC in the Unity engine, as a standalone game.
Starting right now, you can play a short tech demo that incorporates several assets and locations from the New Horizons mod and reimagines them with modern graphics while emulating the same gameplay mechanics.
At their E3 press conference earlier today, Ubisoft announced a new pirate game titled Skull and Bones. The game is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore, the studio behind the naval systems in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which seems to have been a major influence on the design of Skull and Bones. It takes place in the Indian Ocean in 1721, where you take command of your own ship and can sail around an open, connected world by yourself or as part of a "gang" of pirates with other players, fighting and looting other ships as you go.
A preview of multiplayer gameplay was shown at the conference, which you can watch below:
Here's a behind-the-scenes video from the development team explaining more about the game:
The game is scheduled to launch in late 2018 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
You can find out more about it here:...
