Crazy; and they DID work before installing the modpack? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
I think I heard some of these weird reports before and updating the graphics card drivers are said to sometimes fix those kind of flukes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

I can't remember. I checked whether it would start but didn't play the game.

I'll try reinstalling everything.

Hello and <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Paul,
i read this thread and thought: Maybe in one point i can help you -> how to find out which grafic card you have in your notebook. There's a cool and free software in the net you can download: Everest Home. I only know german links for that, but the language of the software can also be english.
<a href="http://www.zdnet.de/downloads/prg/1/x/de011X-wc.html" target="_blank">http://www.zdnet.de/downloads/prg/1/x/de011X-wc.html</a> (You've to click on "Jetzt herunterladen") or use google to find it!

If you start this software you can read out everything you need to know about your notebook.

How to find your grafic card in the software: <a href="http://community.mbuscher.de/images/screenshot_everest.jpg" target="_blank">Screenshot</a>

Maybe it helps to find out your real grafic card.

BTW: The screenshot is from my notebook on which i can play the game also - but mostly i play it on my desktop-pc because there i've a better resolution and grafic quality.

Greetings

cheap but good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yoho, the_saulty_paul!
If this is getting too frustrating, which I easily can understand it would be in time, I would recommend first of all Sid Meier´s Pirates! (he also did Civilization). Its old and easy running, it has decent graphics, it´s bugfree and cost around 10 bucks by now. Only downside is, there is no first-person sailing, only the worldmap. If you persist on sailing in first-person view, the precessor of PotC, Seadogs, would be your favourite choice. Its VERY old and the graphics are poor, but I never encountered a bug in that game. Only downside is, that I think its impossible to find as a new copy.

If you have troubles getting your ATI Mobility 200 drivers up and running with this game, the Omega Drivers will let you play any game, but with minor graphic glitches sometimes. You might want to try them out - if things get out of hand, I´ll help you. This <a href="http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.php" target="_blank">link</a> will lead you to the ATI page, just choose your operating system and select a download mirror to download from <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Great link, Phate and thank you very much. But I think we are past the graphics card problem, he is using a ATI Radeon 200 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Thanks for posting Phate and Peter Willemoes - Great suggestions!

I'm downloading those drivers now. Is there a way to find out which drivers I'm currently using in case things go pear shaped?

I'm going to battle on with the other system, though (I'm reinstalling now).

Quick question: out of interest, what does that MODULES folder do?

Is there any other recommended downloads before I get into a game? (that definitely work and don't brake anything <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> )

Thanks again for all you time, guys!

Will post again in a few minutes to say whether it's working or not.

paul.

I've just installed it and F2 doesn't work (like before).

This game hates me.

I'll try downloading the drivers for <i>that</i> computer.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

This other computer has a 'NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200' if that's of any significance.

Right, getting <a href="http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_169.21_whql_uk.html" target="_blank">these</a>.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

It still isn't working.

This game is such a tease. I can play the game but I can't <b>play</b> the game.

I am wondering if then perhaps somehow your MODULES folder is messed up. You can download mine <a href="http://pafiles.com/build/modules.zip" target="_blank">here</a>; extract the files included to overwrite your own MODULES folder.

<!--quoteo(post=233051:date=Jan 8 2008, 09:02 PM:name=Pieter Boelen)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen @ Jan 8 2008, 09:02 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I am wondering if then perhaps somehow your MODULES folder is messed up. I've reinstalled the game after updating the drivers.

I haven't replaced the modules folder or installed the build mod.

It's the stock game and F2 doesn't work. And presumably, if I were to install 12.1, neither F1 or F2 would work (like before).

I just wondered what that modules folder did. It's off topic.

I am wondering what that MODULES folder would do for you then. Just try it. Even without installing the Build mod. If it doesn't work, I'm afraid I'm running out of tricks. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Aye, it's a masochist; I can hear it breaking itself while I'm sleeping.

Just like before, you:

1. Right click My Computer
2. Left click Properties
3. Left click Hardware
4. Left click Device Manager
5. Double Left click Display Adapter

Now to continue, you:
6. Double Left click on your Graphics Card listed under Display Adapter
7. Left click on the "Driver" tab

Cheers, Petros! Although there's quite a few files rather than a recognisable pack. I think I'll just have a go with those Omega drivers.

I've had a thought.

Seeing as Esc works on the stock game; perhaps it's just something wrong with the F' keys on that computer.

Seeing as the build mod alters keys, can I change the controls in the files rather than in the game?

Esc doesn't work in the Build mod. I once tried re-enabeling that functionality, but that caused some other weirdness, so we removed that again.
In PROGRAM\CONTROLS\init_pc.c you can change the controls for your game. Search for "MainMenu" and "Interface". Let's hope that enables you to get into those interfaces. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
You need to reset your controls to default afterwards for the changes to take effect.

Doing what I said will give you the Driver date and version number.
Isn't that the info you want?

Yes, sorry. I was expecting it to be like the other driver d\ls. But if I can't use the version I can certainly use the date (2005 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> ) Clearly my common sense is as bad my technical prowess.
