Sailor Apprentice
Ahoy mates, I've been sailing the edge of the map where there be monsters for a while now and have returned to friendly shores.

Didgital download version of the game is still running on my desktop, I recently bought a new laptop and tried to install the game, I recieved the message that my activation limit had been reached, the email with my order and prchase confirmation said to contact "Game" which @I bought the game from, they have told me that they cannot increase my activation limit and to contact the publisher, play logic sent me an email saying...

Dear John Paul,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Hereby the most common sollution in order to make Age of Pirates run on most machines.

Age of Pirates: City of Abandoned Ships
1) Make sure you have administrator rights on your PC
2) Visit: http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm and select Drivers in the top menu.

3) Install the latest driver update that suits your operating system, restart your computer and start the game.

If this doesn't solve your issue, please contact the original developer of the game (Akella). The license of the game and the support are now handled by the developer. You can contact them via their support page: http://www.piratesahoy.net/

Kind regards,
-Playlogic
The game won't run at all without the windows 7 tages drivers and its then that I cannot get activated, Playlogic has sent me here as the apparent support site but I don't think anyone here can increase my activation, I am just about to try and use the file from the mod which is mentioned on these boards and thought I would make this, A. to see if there is any way to fix this and B to let you know that Playlogic is advertising you guys as the game support for AoP2 COaS.
Thanks in advance for any information that may help me.
Capt Fitz

installing the mod and latest patch doesn't help, the game installs fine on my desktop without needing activated, yet using the same files to install asks for activation on my laptop, any advice or help would be appreciated as I am away from home just now and don't have access to my desktop pc.

I'd be inclined to find a No-CD patch so you can play your game anywhere...

Interesting that the publisher that actually made money distributing this game would call us the official support site. Let me just set the record straight for you, we have absolutely no affiliation with Akella, Playlogic or Seaward. We are simply a bunch of modding enthusiasts and pirate geeks that volunteer our time to help other like minded individuals because game development and publishing companies do a pretty crappy job of supporting the customers that buy their games and pay their bills. I would really like to see the email address that came from!

You could try over at Seward.ru, the group of people that actually developed CoAS. They do have an English section of their forum, but I wouldn't count on getting a whole lot of help there.

As for getting your game working, I am not sure it is going to legally be possible to do so, DRM sucks and so do companies that use it! As Pieter suggests, your best bet is to try one of the numerous NO CD Patches out there for CoAS. There are many and they are usually pretty easy to find with a quick search.

Wow, I completely managed to skip over that part:

THIS is the REAL website of Akella: http://www.akella.com/ , but I see it doesn't even work properly.
It seems that what Playlogic is saying is "The license of the game and the support are handled by absolutely nobody officially involved,
but HEY, there IS this PiratesAhoy! website with a whole bunch of nice guys who will try to help you anyway!"

That's really... most peculiar! :shock

Just goes to show that the only thing copy protection harms is legal owners of the games, I used to post here for the PotC build mod and I know this isn't the support site, just thought I would let you guys know that play Logic is sending people here, I've sent an email to both Akella an Seaward but no replies.

Getting a no-cd is something that I am aware of is an option but had hoped not to go down that route, it's funny because the installation files I have work fine on my desktop, the game installs and doesn't ask for the activation, only problem comes with trying to install on my laptop, seems that every company who's been involve with making an distributing the game has abandonded it like a ship in the lost city, kinda feel like a resident of that place, stuck with the game but not wanting to leave it.

I also sent a reply to Playlogic informing them that this is not the games support page, haven't had a reply from that yet but I think it's shocking that they can send people to a group of volunteers who mod the game.

Loving the gentlemen of fortune mod, shame about the big sea battles, I'll go and try find a working no-cd.

thanks guys.

You're absolutely right. Playlogic has been doing an EXQUISITE job at:
1) Ensuring that NOBODY knows about the game
2) For those people where #1 failed, make sure that they can't BUY it if they'd want to
3) For those people that somehow managed to get past #1 and #2, make it difficult/impossible to run the game properly
4) To make #3 worse, provide NO support whatsoever but pretend that they DO give support by making use of people who do it for free

Even though I myself would have WANTED to buy the game, I never did as I never found any place that would sell it to me on CD and I'm not big on digital downloads.
Apparently for good reason too, judging by your experience. :whipa

Technically, you SHOULDN'T need to get No-CD patches for any legally purchased games because... well, you PAID for them.
But I always go and get them anyway even for games I DID buy because it's so much more convenient to be able to run them WITHOUT sticking the CD in.

If this doesn't solve your issue, please contact the original developer of the game (Akella). The license of the game and the support are now handled by the developer. You can contact them via their support page: http://www.piratesahoy.net/

Considering this even further, if we now apparently handle the license of the game and the support, does that mean we can distribute it as we see fit?
Eg. without asking any money for it since we don't get anything either? :razz

I am convinced that Playlogic wanted this game to fail, that is the only logical reason that I can think of for a publishing company to do such a piss poor job of advertising, distributing and supporting the game that they did. If I recall correctly, less than 2 months after the game was released in the west, Playlogic's support forums simply disappeared because of "technical difficulty's" and they never came back on line. I was shocked that they did actually sign a digital distribution deal, even if it was a limited one.

Pieter, while part of me is tempted to actually try that and see just how fast they would send Keith a "Cease and Desist" letter, I think our time would be better spent working on Hearts of Oak. That one we will have complete control over, and there is not a damn thing they can do to stop us!

I suppose you're right; it's not quite worth it, is it? But it's fun thinking about it! :cheeky

When you consider that I only found out about COAS a few years ago through this forum while using build 13 for sea dogs 2 *cough* sorry "Pirates of the Caribbean" and only bought the digital download from game because it was the only option added to (as far as I can see) several of the mods for build mod seem to be in COAS AND add to that this is pretty much the only SOLID place for information about the game, I don't see why you guys should not be able to distribute, considering no one legal allowed to seems to care.

B.T.W Pieter, some time ago I asked about the Sid Meiers version of pirates, you were correct, the dancing was strangely addictive :p

Edit:

As it stands I own a legal copy of the game which i cannot use, which no manual or any documentation were supplied and I, a legal user, having to rely on you guys for my initial information and then afterwars SUPPORT for the game i.e. bug fixing, etc and then having to find a method of cirumventing the proctection, which condsiering that my i.s.p has blocked most of the site's that a person would get such a method, forcing me to then have to mask my i.p to find something. not really what the game deserves, thank you though guys, you are unsung heroes.

reply from Seaward

Hello, John.

Please, contact to your publisher
We are developers of the game not publisher or distributers

Sorry

Well, that's fair enough on Seaward's part. They've got nothing to do with all the nonsense. :facepalm

Really bad that you as a legal user can't use a game you paid for. As you said a no disc patch really shouldn't be necessary in this case.

Did you ever get a reply from Playlogic after you told them that Pirates Ahoy! is not the official support site? It's just strange that they thought that.

I never thought to look before, but over at Playlogic's web page, they are indeed sending people with problems to us! There FAQ officially consists of two questions :

The game does not launch or displays Administrative Rights errors

Solution: update Tages drivers.
Please visit: http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm and select Drivers from the top menu.
Install the latest driver update for your operating system, restart your computer and start the game.

For other issues: visit: the Age of Pirates forum at http://forum.piratesahoy.net/

The good news is that since our forum upgrade, the link they are using doesn't work anymore, so that makes Playlogic look even more pathetic! This is what game company's call support now? It is absolutely pathetic, and this is exactly why PA! exists, because these greedy corporate bastards forget about their customers the second they make a sale. They don't care if their crappy DRM works or if their customers ever get to actually play the game they paid for. I find it even more amusing because of the lambasting we gave Playlogic about how they chose to "distribute" this game.

I wonder how customers considering purchasing any game from Playlogic would feel if they new they would get dumped off on some volunteer modding community somewhere for support that they actually paid full retail for? I am tempted to find out just how fast I can get myself banned from their forums....

To look at this they're even proud of the way they failed the game, the developers and the customers

PLAYUNLOGICAL.jpg

Anyone would think they developed it as well

PlayUnlogical should be the company name.

That is insane. Insane, I say. INSANE!!!

While I don't mind them pointing to us, since at least then we potentially get more members, there is something VERY wrong with that picture.

That makes me wonder if they're actually aware of that Pirates Ahoy! isn't the official support site but sends people here anyway just to give the impression that they provide some sort of support. Since they were told it does imply that they know but didn't change their FAQ. I hope not, and that it's just a misunderstanding on their part, but if they do that is just pathetic.

That is an interesting idea, Thagarr, but do they even have a forum? I can't seem to find one.

It seems Playlogic has/had financial problems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playlogic_Entertainment
Maybe that could have something to do with their poor marketing of both Age of Pirates games.

I just ran into the same problem. I Guess it just took me a few years to use all 5 attempts.

Been a fan and constant admirer of this site and jealous of the skills you folks have.
