WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

The carronades look rather small...but good to see them there! The other ship looks intriguing!:) Hmm, a Temeraire class 74? Or an extremely large and built up indiaman?

Yeah, I thought the size looked a little off but I'd used the same scale conversion as for the cannon...

This would be one scary Indiaman :D

Very close with the Temeraire. I'd badly wanted to build one, but seeing as you'd mentioned one was already in the works was looking around for something similar but different enough to be worth building. Eventually came on the 80 gun Tonnant class. Also designed by Sane, looks a lot like a Temaraire but 10ft longer and used as an equivalent to the British and Spanish 90 gun 2nds. In practice a much better ship than those, carries more and bigger guns on the 2 lower decks, and vastly better to sail. In British service would be rearmed to 84 guns and rated as such.

I'm using a mixture of plans from 2 British captured Tonnants, the Malta (Guillaume Tell) and Canopus (Franklin). Canopus in particular is very beautiful IMO, a particularly elegant bow and stern.

Woah, slow down there. Does this mean you've finished the Shannon and she's ready to be converted for use in PotC and CoAS?
At this rate, it looks as though you'll end up like Captain Armstrong, churning out ship models faster than we can get them into the games! :p

Yet another ship I was planning on building! oh well, can't get them all. :( Certainly a better design than the English three decked 2nd rates, though the three deckers supposedly had an advantage broadside to broadside by being taller, though in all other respects (sailing, firepower etc) were inferior.
though I must admit that the bow of the Canopus(Franklin) is rather elegant, the entire ship is anglicised, and the bow and stern are in the english style, certainly not original. http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/80375.html
the Malta (Guillaume Tell) at least has the original fittings, but her stern is rather odd. it is not the usual french horshoe shape, and the quarter galleries don't match the curvature of the decks or planking. This model of the class shows the stern that was likely the standard for the class as built.

This plan of the Sans Pareil appears to have this same appearance as teh model, and has much nicer quarter gallieres than the Guilaume Tell, but unfortunately doesn't include the transom. http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/87562.html what I was intending to do was build using this plan, and then alter the stern from the Guillaume Tell to fit the transom of the Sans Pareil, based off the model. I was torn between using the anglicised but good looking headrails of Conupos or Tonnant, http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/80431.html and those of the Bucentaure (Lead ship of the subsequent french 80 gun class and french flagship at Trafalgar, but was essentially just a modified version of the same design)

About the carronades: pretty sure carronades were thicker than long guns... so a different scale might be required. You might be able to do it from reference images of the trincomalee.

Wouldn't want that! :pbut actually wish I'd taken them a bit slower, quality mightve suffered because I built them so fast, and half of them still aren't in game:rolleyes:I'll be fixing that now that its summer and I have the time. But I would not reccomend building more than one ship at a time, it tends to slow down progress on both in the end, and you end up with completed ships still not ingame a very long time after you finish them.

Armada, no the Shannon is not yet complete, she is getting close but everything left is fiddly and not much fun, was feeling a little burned out and decided to take a break to build something else.

Captain Armstrong, perhaps you could build the Bucentaure or a Tonnant in French configuration then? Like you say there are many differences from the Canopus (Franklin). Franklin was very badly damaged at the Nile, lost 2 masts, most of her guns, battered by multiple British ships, set on fire by the Orient's explosion, this fire burnt out her quarter deck. As rebuilt she has a British style stern gallery and rig, bulwarks are built up and squared off, the new head and even the armament is different. I intend to follow the Canopus plans rather than the Malta's, was only using them because the Canopus plans lack hull lines. Plus I am thinking of painting her stripes along the line of the gunports instead of following the strakes as she has currently. Overall the appearance would be very different from the Bucentaure...

Ah, so it will be an anglicised version (generally the appearance of prizes was anglicised after their first major refit, which would be right away if they were extensively damaged) You could even call it an english Canopus class ship of the line, as it will probably be much closer in appearance to that class than the Tonnant class. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canopus-class_ship_of_the_line
I'd be happy to build a French verison! much simpler than trying to explain what I envisioned anyway. :onya

So does that mean we'll be seeing some more screenshots from you pretty soon? I'm looking forward to seeing what you've done for Hearts of Oak... :keith

Fair enough; I've been in that situation before, so I know what you mean. :onya

Hopefully very soon! Just running my work by a more experienced modeler before I reveal it, so as soon as he replies and I make any required changes :dance

That's an idea for the name...

Will wait and see what naming convention is used. GoF seems to use a mixture of individual ship names and descriptions like "Heavy Frigate". If we are using class names for Hearts of Oak she can be the Canopus class, otherwise I might pick an individual name from one of the captured Tonnants.

Cut gunports, added hull thickness, building the internal structure and decks now. Half tempted to rebuild the Shannon's hull like this...

We use class names for all new navy ships in PotC and will probably do so in Hearts of Oak, so "Canopus class 3rd (or 2nd?) Rate" would be ideal.

If you're working on internal details below the waterline, make sure you can easily remove them for PotC and CoAS.
Everything inside that is below the waterline is inaccessible (therefore invisible) to the player, so there is no point in wasting polygons. Only in Hearts of Oak should we be able to open up all decks for the player.

3rd rate in British service, I don't know what the french designation would be. Which said, she is a few feet longer than the Victory and carries an extra pair of guns on each of the two lower gundecks.

All modular, only the inner side of the hull above the waterline is actually attached to the exterior hull. If I model the hold and orlop at this stage they will be a distinct group that can be remove with a single click. Decks are broken up into beams and separate upper/lower surfaces. For PotC/CoAS the gundeck will only use the upper surface, upper gundeck will use upper and lower surfaces, decks above this will use beams too.

Sounds good to me. :cheers

Canopus is shaping up. Once I've completed the head I'll switch back to the Shannon and finish her.

Speaking of which...

Those carronades might be to scale, or close at least. They have a length of 1.1m, which is apparently correct for a 24lb carronade. I've scaled them up to a length of 1.23m for 32lbers and also raised up the carriage more. Still much smaller than even the 9lb cannon. Near carronade is the old dimensions, further one is the new.

The new one looks better! did you take off the wheels to pivot the carriage, or did you receive the model without them? just wondering because that might explain why they seemed especially low. But yeah 38 gun ships like Shannon definitely had 32pdr carronades, not 24pdrs.
