Solved Bad save (Both vanilla and New Horizons mod)

Oneironz

Sailor Apprentice
Hello forumers,

I can start PotC just fine, I can start a new career, get out of the boat and do whatever I wish...

The problem is, I can't save the game. Wether is on the sea or land, the game won't save the session properly.

I've tried to search around for answers, I didn't find any threads related to this problem.

I did install the game outside the program files. It is installed in the "C:/PotC" folder.

My rig:

Windows 8 Pro x64
Intel I7 core 920 @ 2.67Ghz
6 GB Ram DDR3
1TB HD
Nvidia GTX 650 Palit

As we can see, my rig has the needed juice to run 1000x this game altogether, I have the latest directx, latest Visual C++ Redistributable 2010 package (x64), latest Nvidia drivers (320.49), etc.

I cleaned the registry using Tune-up Utilities 2012 and I also did the DEP allowance for the game.

I also put the .exe in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3 and I gave administrator rights.

I still cannot save the game though :/

I did enable the error logging in the config.ini file, After shutting the game down, I checked the game's folder and didn't find any logs whatsoever...

Any ideas?

NO logs at all? Not even a compile.log and system.log? Sounds like it is Windows Security Stupidity after all!
We've been getting more and more reports of things not working properly even outside the Program Files folder.

But how to convince Windows that you really SHOULD be allowed to do something with the files in that folder?
It's really beginning to do my head in! :modding

Yeah, Windows can be very annoying with certain subjects :/ Where else could I install the game without being pissed off by the security? I only have one drive, no partitions or anything... The problem must be lying in the game's rights to do stuff...

:nogood

There must be something that we can do about this! :whipa

You can try My Documents? Or otherwise maybe there is some option to "take ownership" of the installation folder?
Not sure if that works; I didn't manage to bypass ridiculous security crap on my external hard drive either.
Apparently Windows is fine with the game messing around in my C:\Games\Pirates of the Caribbean folder. But NOT my external HD.
Uh? Wha??? :modding

What about creating a new drive and installing the game there, i think it has to do something with the firewall. I have windows 7 so I'm not sure.

Just try to install your game to all possible folders. My dokuments, another drive and so on... :wp

Perhaps even moving the folder somewhere else would be leverage enough.

Hmm I can try to reinstall in some different places. Prob is, I don't own any other drives, I'll try to take ownership of the installation folder.

I moved the folder to the desktop, got the total ownership of the whole folder, put it into compatibily with XP Service Pack 3, gave Administrator rights...

Still not working

Connecting an external USB Harddrive or USB Stick and installing the game there could solve the problem. Another possibility could be deaktivating the anoying UAC as i always used to do ;)

I disabled the UAC as piratesjunkie said...

Still not working, it's making me want to pewn some slaves out of frustation!!! :whipa

I have been playing AoP2 COAS with the GoF mod, it worked flawlessly but now I get ENGINE.exe errors all the time!!!!

I think it may be related to the fact that I have windows 8...

I have Windows 8 and don't have this problem... I installed the game to C:\Game Files\PotC- Hew Horizons.
I do occasionally get a bad save, for some reason, but it's nothing like what you describe. :shrug

What can I say? Sometimes technology goes mad like this -_- I will try a last install though. In the C:/Games/Pirates of the Caribbean.

Uh... What if the game cannot save due the folder's name? What if the save path has a folder called Pirates of the Caribbean and not PotC??

I'll try that right away!

Installing to desktop also doesn't allow it? Did I ever mention I hate computers? Because I DO hate computers! :boom:

Well, other possibilities are disconnecting from Ethernet first and then disable Antivirus, Antispyware and Firewall step by step and test again. Or rightclick on the Gamestart.exe (don´t know how that one is called), choose Compatibility Mode and choose Windows XP Service Pack 3 Mode or Windows 7 Mode, save that and start the game.
Btw i also have CtD´s or Bad Saves every few hours. That´s normal for that bloody Storm Engine but i always could save my Pirategames basically on every OS i tried. The issues that you have, have absolutely nothing to do just with the game, more with your other Hard- and Softwareconfiguration

Win 8 has more security stuff than win 7. It even has its own antivirus stuff. Whatever your problem is it is global, which indicates that it is a windoze issue. Look in your windoze antivirus, firewall, and DEP folders for the cause.

@ Pieter
imagine what life would be without computers. We wouldn´t have enough problems, we would have to create them ourselves, that would be boring :p
