Game Promotion: Laying the Foundation

It seems a few people over there are won over by Naval Actions' eye candy (which is fair enough), but it's worth reminding them that HoO will look just as good. :wp

[sarcasm]EYE CANDY!?!?!? Those people stacked pennants AND flags on the FOREMAST. How could anyone support them after that? [/sarcasm]

This would be useful. It seems a few people over there are won over by Naval Actions' eye candy (which is fair enough), but it's worth reminding them that HoO will look just as good. :wp
Indeed. And also reminding them that we're not trying to make the same game twice.

I'm with PC... the game looks fun, but it looks like it would be better named World of Sailcraft; I't's cartoony. I like the Cartoony look, but HoO's ships do look better.

Just a quick thought after seeing some new screenshots from Wedori...
Nice work Wedori!
Some of those screenshots might look good as a new banner for our IndieDB page. I might experiment with this, unless anyone objects. ;)
Quick mock-ups of new banners for:

Any thoughts? I reckon something similar (and bigger) might work beautifully for the WIP Hearts of Oak website.

Good choice of picture! Could you put it in place on the ModDB/IndieDB? I'd quite like to see it actually in use. :cheers

We could also, if you like, have the HoO header working like the one for PotC: New Horizons: http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-horizons
In other words, having it be bigger. Not sure if that would work though, especially not if we'd want the ship hull to show up on all pages.
But maybe something springs to mind. :shrug

Surely, beautiful material. I just wanted to use the opportunity to quickly raise my suggestions about the official webpage.

I didn't like the IM Fell English font used for body text and small headlines, It clearly wasn't made for those sizes. I made comparisons and was happily surprised that IM Fell is a total rip-off of famous Garamond! So I'd suggest to use size and web proofed Garamond for body text. Adobe charges USD29 for single weight, but there are tons of various quality free versions online, I could look into that. Also, if you were open to ideas, I could make a mock-up of IMHO more unified design for the page, when i'll be back home in 2 days . As Post Captain said, no modern stuff preffered, Bodoni would be excellent match for Garamond and could be used for headlines, where grungyness of IM Fell is still rather distracting. It's also very period-evoking, even being from 1790, you could see similar fashion in hand-written annotations for maps since at least 1730.

You're quite right that a lot of the "small text" is not displaying very clearly.

It gets a bit better when zoomed in though.

most hi-end fonts have multiple contrast and spacing subsets for each font size, called 'opticals', embedded in the same file, which improve readability in various sizes. Dedicated web fonts are made similar way. Also, even 'Help Wanted' has too many small details for it's size, that's why I'd suggest getting rid of IM Fell for everything except Logo and page headline. You wouldn't notice a difference if Garamond were used. It even seems 'help wanted' use artificial 'BOLD' aplied to it, when the typeface didn't have it's own bold version. Such bolding demolishes all readability and proportions.

I've put it up on Mod/IndieDB now. See what you think. ;)
Interesting idea to do something similar to the NH profile, but indeed that would mean the hull wouldn't be visible on all pages, so it's probably better as-is.

I agree with your thoughts here. The site isn't finalised and the IM Fell font, while good for headers, doesn't really suit body text as you say.
I think Captain Murphy would have to change the font himself (he set the site up), but I haven't checked yet.

If you want to put forward some design ideas for the site, please do. :onya

Perhaps a little late to the table here, but...

I like the design and feel! Good job :)

...but I don't like the colour of the St. Albans, particularly the yellow. It looks... kind of green and anaemic. :sick Any chance of warming it up to a more yellow ochre hue...?

I second that notion. And let's paint her bottom white, while we're at it.

Hmm... I see your point about the colours. Here's an attempt to modify the base image in GIMP to see if we can fix that:
StAlbans_modified1.jpg
I've warmed up the yellows, which happens to make the masts look slightly better too, and painted the underside white. What do you think?

I still think the hull would look better in ocher instead of gold. Then we leave the decorations in gold and everything is right.

I agree, but it would be more tricky to achieve with image editing. I could give it a go, though.

True, but we still haven't even got a standardised set of textures and colour values to give them. If we want it done properly, it will take quite some time.
In the meantime, here's my attempt to edit the image a bit further to give it an ochre hull:
StAlbans_modified2.jpg
Closer to what you had in mind?

That's way closer. I downloaded Wedori's textures, and I saw that he already has an ocher texture. The current texture is from the same source and identical to the ocher texture, except for the coloration. It should be useable for the time being.
