Need Help Mistress climbs over the fence and attacks you... She cannot be shot dead, and escape is impossible!

Firstly, since this is my first post, I want to thank everyone here who helped put this awesome game together! It's easily the most fun I've had on a PC in a long time..

Getting back to my topic:
I'm doing the Save the Girl mission, trying to bust Catherine out of her brothel. The rooftop part is fine (although there's a bug where I'm able to shoot the 3 pirates who appear, and their bodies don't disappear, and Catherine won't talk to me.. I found I have to kill them with a sword to get it to work)...

..Jumping down and talking to Catherine, however, the Mistress appears as we try to sneak through the window and she can't be killed by my Musketoon, nor by anything else. My sword doesn't inflict damage, and even if I shoot her 'dead', she mysteriously lives on, and I cannot get through any window.

There are some curious features of my game which I'm wondering could be related...
1) I have already got lots of XP and skills (lvl 9 already, with 'Gunman'), and might therefore be able to do 'too much' damage with a gun.
2) I can only seem to carry 6 portions of gunpowder, which might not be enough to fire 3 shots..?
3) I was not using the walkthrough initially, and instead went around and killing Clint Eastwood etc., which might have affected the game, since when I talk to the people in Nevis, Catherine K doesn't show up in any conversation, and they give nothing but a variant of the same advice (while picking my pockets). In fact, I stumbled upon Catherine myself, at the brothel...
4) Other quirks: when I move side to side (A & D keys), I can go through walls, which other players on here don't seem to be able to do (?)... although I have retried the mission several times without ever using this glitch.
5) sometimes when I fire the Musketoon at the Mistress it performs a slightly 'off' animation whereby no bullets are fired, and no damage is dealt.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate your ideas, because I don't really want to start the whole game over!

Thanks a million!

1. Woodes Rogers is a VERY linear storyline; don't try to Free Play around with that one, because it tends to throw things out of whack.
Also, recommend to get http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/build-14-beta-3-progress.20686/ and start a new game; that contains some fixes for the Woodes Rogers storyline.

2. That's intentional; you're SUPPOSED to only be able to carry six shots.

4. That is a very, very, VERY well-known problem and has been covered in our FAQ for many years:
http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/frequently-asked-questions.14915/#post-352880
We got so tired of people having a problem with it, that as per the Beta 3 WIP version, sidestep is disabled by default.

5. One day we have to look into the muskets and musketoons. :facepalm

Hi Skippy,

the 3 pirates who appear, and their bodies don't disappear
I have noticed that sometimes lately. I had to open & close my inventory to get them disappear. I hope when we go back to skip autoloot in this quest more things will be as they were planned.

I have always been able to kill Mistress, but only with the musketoon. I'll check that out.

6 gunpowder + 6 pistolgrapes should be enough for 3 shots with the Musketoon yes.

The Musketoon can behave strange as it and the Musket carried on your back is a mod I have made
and is not perfect at all. :modding

And it's Caroline. ;)

Okay - thanks to you both for the thorough heads up!
I will probably try to find some way around it, and then giving up, will endeavour to restart and stick to the plot ^^

Incidentally, which storylines would you recommend for non-linear play?

I can see how much work it has been for you guys to make the game and forum work -- can't thank ye enough ;)

P.s. For me, personally until I get used to the fast forward/slow down buttons, having the sideways movement is great (even if I go through things), since by running 'diagonally' with them, the slow jog of the original game is sped up a fair bit :)

NOT Woodes Rogers or Hornblower, I'd say. Any of the others may have an opening you have to play through, but after that you aren't forced to follow the story.

I always use time compression for that. R-Key.

That's actually what I meant when I mentioned the 'speed up/slow down buttons' ;)

I'll try one of the other storylines then - thank you.

My last thoughts are: When I shoot the Mistress it seems to do 70 damage all in one go, which might be 'too much', as I mentioned previously.. Also, playing on 'Arcade Mode' could have affected the game...?

Maybe I wrote something to secure killing Mistress with 1 shot of the Musketoon. :)
WoodesRogers plays best if you don't change any settings at all.

I have played Build14 beta3 wip11 the Brothel part and the 3 thugs from the roof disappeared ok and Mistress died
after 1 shot of the Musketoon.

That's good to hear. I overlooked the update, but have now installed it, so I suppose I should consider the problem 'solved'. Thanks again.

Whereas I'm playing Woodes Rogers under Beta 3.3 WIP, and Mistress did not die from one hit from the musketoon. You can't reload while your sword is drawn, and if you put the sword away for a second shot then you don't live long enough to finish reloading. Which left me with only one option - cheat. :D

I'd enabled side-step as I usually do because it's useful for getting out of tight corners when you're boxed in by friends. So I side-stepped out of Mistress' sword range, reloaded, and fired again. She can't survive two musketoon shots!

If I recall, @Jack Rackham recently changed that fight to be a bit more exciting. Which is a bit surprising, because it already WAS pretty tough! :shock
I might have misunderstood, though....

It's not exciting. You can't hurt Mistress with a sword, she's as immune. Only the musketoon harms her, and it doesn't harm her enough with one shot. So you cheat or you die. If you cheat, you move to a place where you can't be hurt either, then it's about as exciting as shooting at an inert target, which is exactly what Mistress is at this point.

I don't know if Mistress' level, and therefore hit points, are tied to yours the same way random enemy level and hit points are. As you gain in level, so do the random thugs you meet in the jungle or in dungeons, for example, and what would kill a random thug with one shot or one swipe when you're level 1 won't do it when you're level 10. The same may apply to Mistress, in which case I should not have gone through the Port Royale dungeon right after Woodes Rogers turned me loose near the start of the story...

It was the fight with the 3 thugs on the roof I changed, not this one.
I'll check it when I find some time...

Overall this storyline plays best if you don't do a lot of other things.
Maybe I have to take care of a situation where Mistress is too strong?
