Facts & Ideas from books

A.H

Privateer
I didn't know which thread to post this in; but as of last week I started reading a new book I got from London Mairitme Museum called "Life Among the Pirates" by David Cordingly.

It basically defines the romance from the reality of actual pirates.. and how/where the common pirate looks derived from.. as well as write in full detail everything about pirates around the world (specifically the bucaneers of the West Indies).. exploits of Henry Morgan, Francis Drake, and many other privateers & pirates who wandered the seas.. and today I'm reading a lot of nice facts about treasure fleet lootings with amazing details described.

Such books can give a better perspective for HoO game developers in being more creative with the construction of the game!

:thumbs1 Yup - that is a very good book.

David Cordingly is one of the best writers about the Age of Pirates. :yes

Another really good author is David F Marley.
If you are interested you should try and get hold of his following books:-
Pirates - Adventurers of the High Seas - Published 1995 - ISBN 1-85409-215-4 --- mainly about the raids carried out by Caribbean Pirates, Buccaneers, and Privateers on the Spanish Main includes the French Filibusters and their raids .

Daily Life of Pirates - published 2012 - ISBN 978-0-313-39563-5 --- covers the same things as Cordingly - but includes more information about the French Filibusters.

If you are interested in biographical details of individuals - ( Pirates, Governors, Pirate Hunters, etc) then the best books I have found are also by David F Marley:-

Pirates and Privateers of the Americas ( single Volume ) Published 1994 - ISBN 0-87436-751-4 --- has biographical details of 350 people active in the Caribbean & Pacific between approx 1650 to 1700.

Pirates of the Americas ( 2 Volumes )
Vol 1 -- 1650 - 1685
Vol 2 -- 1686 - 1725
Published 2010
ISBN 978-1-59884-201-2
basically an updated and expanded version of the above book - contains biographical details of 500 people
( This 2 volume set is really expensive - over £90 :shock ).

Nice I should order those as well! The other pirate book I have is "Pirates of Barbary" by Adrian Tinniswood...

I must say, this book from the moment you open it you can perceive visuals in your brain, far better than any movie or documentary! I discovered tons of interesting fact about Mediterranean corsairs.. it's hard to believe they actually existed not that long ago; yet swarming around the Mediterranean today surely doesn't hint a glimpse of their former existence!

I have had my eye on "Seamanship in the Age of Sail" for a long time but is usually only available at €200 or higher excluding postage.

I tried ordering it through bookstores, etc but was out of print. I tried finding it in libraries, etc but could not find it in Ireland. Finally it has reappeared on the RADAR on thebookdepository.co.uk

http://www.bookdepository.com/Seamanship-Age-Sail-Etc-John-Harland/9780870219559

for about €50. I verified it with the book store in the university that I work in and it is indeed being reprinted. Now is your chance to get one for 'cheap' if you can call €50 that. From what I understand it is a great piece of work and one that Patrick O'Brien used for most of the Aubrey/Maturin series.

From my experience the more costly the book is, the more it is worth that price! Books are like vacations.. the more you spend on them, the more entertainment you recieve :D
