Included in Build Unrecognized Text in Questbook!

If that is the case, it should happen every single time for specific quest entries, right?
I dunno how the file reading function works, but I don't suspect this to be the problem. I think the first option is the problem.

I had this problem yesterday and in my case it was related to options corruption. The garbage in the questbook looked exactly the garbage from the end of the options file (minus unprintable symbols). Removing the latter removed the former as well. :shrug

Thanks. At least that one is manageable then. :cheers

The Chronicles of Horatio Hornblower storyline. I just started new game. This is part of the quest book linked to International relations tutorial.

That's a known long standing bug. It's still unclear whether it can be fixed. See Unrecognized Text in Questbook!
Sometimes deleting the options file in the main PotC folder helps with this. And sometimes it doesn't.

It's ok. It doesn't bother me. Just because we are close to the Public release, I thought it should be removed. But if it's an old bug, let it be.

I'd still recommend to check if your options file has any garbage (something that looks pretty much like the end of your questbook entry, only weirder) in it. When that file is corrupted, that might cause other problems.

How can that happen? I just reinstalled the whole game together with the new build update... o_O

You were running the game, that's enough. It happens all the time. Looks to me like some kind of memory-related bug in the engine (buffer overflow or something), but I don't really know.
When I first started playing PotC, it was already a well-known issue. :)

Might I assume that this does not happen in the same spot every time?
So far, whenever this bug crops up, it seems extremely inconsistent.

From what I can tell this only seems to happen when the last entry of the text file is given in the questbook.
We could try to add another entry in all text files which just isn't used. Maybe that fixes it?

"pirate_book.txt" didn't have anything wrong but I've found that the garbage characters which sometimes appear at the end of a questbook don't appear if there's a blank line after the last line in the text file for that questbook.

BRILLIANT observation @Grey Roger :monkeydance

Reinstalling the correct game version and going back to my repeatable Goldbug example back in September and placing a blank line at the end of the questbook file entries then starting a new game gets rid of the garbage, replacing the file as was without a clear blank line (and starting a new game) gives garbage again.

So possibly ensuring all questbook files have a blank line at the end may clear most if not all of these annoying quirks.

That's awesome news indeed! Anyone care to af some white lines at the bottom of all those files then? :woot

I'll do it to get this cleared up. I note the other example in this thread was last entry in "trade" questbook file which further suggests this may fix this issue completely.

Actually what seems to be the difference is a carriage return or not on the last text line.

With a carriage return present scrolling down in notepad takes you to the blank line below (I don't think you actually need a blank line physically in the file (ie a second carriage return) but will check. Without a carriage return the scroll stops on the text line. All the quoted garbage cases here have the latter situation, which is also how many of the more recent questbook files are formatted.

It may be @Levis idea of values carried forward from the previous use of a longer string comes into play if there is no CR to signal the end of the current string.

Wow you checked ALL those files! Thanks a lot. :doff

No problem it was very simple and quick to do and you're very welcome, I did think about it because I know you jealously guard the integrity of your files (as with all modders I suspect and rightly so) but then I thought it's only a carriage return I would be adding so I went ahead with everyone's files and hope I didn't upset anyone in the process.
