Since I don't want to hijack Post Captain's thread more than I already have as I can see this deviating quite a bit from now on, I've started this thread where hopefully we can get some ideas together for a regular video campaign on HoO.
 
I'm going to get a more professional action plan worked out, but just off the cuff these are my proposals:

  • A bi-annual update on all development, including but not limited to Modelling, Coding, Quest Creation, Artistic direction and of course community feedback. Since we're not all in the same room, I can see this most practically taking the form of a whistle-stop exempla video with images, diagrams and examples, not unlike what has already been done in existing videos, but more regular.

  • A bi-annual (or whenever a major release is made) cinematic promotional trailer. This would be a polished, gameplay-orientated taste of what has been accomplished. It would include nothing but a title and end description, with a 1-2 minute video in between.

  • An annual collate of all the year's development, with inter-cutting segments from the trailers. This would be more for archiving and future-proofing the community's work, as whilst great for dev, I doubt people will sit through countless individual videos 6 or 7 years from now.
In terms of what these would require:

  • The update would need at least a couple of members to create video entries on their own progress, as well as a rough progress report which i can include in some form. Possibly even some 'Quest-play throughs'

  • This would be a collection of gameplay footage, from anyone who finds the time whilst playing to hit 'record'. I would then collect and edit this to tell a basic narrative. If anyone would have any ideas on a more specific narrative, this would also be considered, of course. I'd offer to do this all myself, but my system is optimised for video production more than game-play and I have no doubt there are those here who could do a better job of playing HoO anyway!

  • This would just involve cutting together all of the above in a way that is easy to follow but detailed and informative.

This is all HoO specific. But of course, if ANYONE has some lovely footage or dev info from New Horizons they want spruced into a video of some description, I'd be happy to oblige :onya

I've got to admit a Build 14 Beta 4 trailer for PotC would be pretty nice.
But there isn't any footage to be used; that would need to be shot by someone first.
 
Definitly, I've just been taking a look at the one released for Beta 3 (who did that?) and it's impressive stuff. I'm hoping @Red Back Dude might be up for collaborating on one for 4 if he's around? :) If not, I'm happy to take it on myself once I get my current modelling projects finished.
 
Well it'd be good to collab with any three on this, as I'm the noob here! :D
 
Speaking from experience here, if you post your vids on YouTube and have the sound of wind/water/rain you will almost always get a takedown notice or copyright claim from someone. Just about every video I have done with just water or wind noises for a few seconds has had a claim made against it. Usually they are dismissed quickly but there is one I have right now that is ongoing with The Orchard where they claim that the sound of wind is copyrighted in one of their songs... so if they push the claim we will be in Federal court for it before long. Be sure to have the licenses for the wind noises used readily available for any copyright claims, otherwise they will be allowed to monetize your video and put ads on it whether you want to or not.
 
Thanks Captain Murphy! That's really brilliant advice I only wish more people would follow, including those posting on behalf of companies. I've run into this problem a whole load of times, so these days I have a huge foley sound library specifically for this kind of thing, with either purchased or recorded sounds. Many of them are from the BBC's own sound library, which needless to say, shuts all the others up quite fast ;)

But that doesn't stop some idiots from still claiming it as theirs, as you say. Good luck with Orchard, that sounds like complete sh*t. I can't stand improper monetization. I had a Uni film I put on there a few years back, and Sony swore blue it was their music I used. It wasn't. It was a 1900s wax recording which had been CC with attribute for almost 20 years. They simply claimed the arrangement as it 'sounded' like one of their licensed live versions of it. I've even had my own music, completely made from scratch by me, 'claimed' on there! I gave up on youtube for professional projects a few years ago because of this. Besides, Vimeo can be far fairer than youtube on this...have we entertained using Vimeo too? It doesn't get the traffic of Youtube but it sure brings the traffic that matters...

EDIT: While we're on the topic actually, @Pieter Boelen , whose are the cannon sounds? As if I were to make a POTC trailer, that'd probably be the only diegetic sound I'd actually use...the rest being foley and music.

The ones currently in the mod? I haven't a clue. I think @Jack Black might have been the one who added them.
There are all sorts of different ones for different calibres.
 
If you need video material I might be able to help with raw footage. I used to make short videos for POTC until for some mysterious reason I became unable to make any at all. No sofware worked. Then early in 2015 they started working again so methinks I could make some new ones in Fraps. I already do have one for HOO I made by accident.

I am using Mirillis Action! for recording game footage. So far it has worked for almost every game I have tried. It allows for the mic to be saved to a separate channel of audio so you can strip out comments later or find clapboard marking points quickly in editor without it being in the final product. If I need to find a spot to come back to I will just clap my hands next to the mic and it makes it easy to find the spike in post.

Ok, it is in AVI format now but that can be changed in Format Factory. Do you have any preferences?
 
Regarding the rights for the cannon sounds, if that truly were a problem, wouldn't we have a report about it on one of our existing videos by now?
 
Because I'll be working in and archiving with Mac formats, AVI is best avoided so preferably a .mov or mpeg of any description using a h.264 codec would be good so it'll be nice and losslessly compressed for uploading and sharing. But don't worry too much if this is a pain...I can change that easily enough my end if your internet connection can handle an AVI. Just be good to get a footage pool started!
 
If you intend to compile footage for a New Horizons trailer, I suggest you start another thread for it in the PotC forum to avoid confusion.

Thanks @Hylie Pistof , definitely some useable shots here! How easy is it to hide the ui on HoO at this point, or has that not been added yet? I'm just thinking for the cinematic trailers.

I'll post a feature list up once I've compiled one, but does anyone else have some HoO footage they're willing for use in trailers/dev? Or any specific features they'd be willing to help highlight?

One thing to also consider at some point, it might be a good idea to hang on to some of the early footage of Hearts of Oak demo stuff that doesn't go quite right during testing, such as being shot out of the tavern like a cannon ball. Kind of a blooper reel type thing, most of us will have already seen it of course, but it might be highly amusing for players to see some of the more amusing bits of early development.
