Unity Developer or Level Designer

Bleash

Sailor Apprentice
Programmer
Provisional
Hello there,

I'm a software engineer and I'd love to help with the development of HoO.

I have some experience with C# but no experience at all with Unity.

If you think I can be usefull as a Developer or a Level Designer I'll be glad to help.

Ahoy @Bleash, welcome aboard mate!

We are more interested in a desire to help and a willingness to learn than actual experience, but certainly previous experience in C# is a big plus! @JohnSilver is our lead developer and programming coordinator, he should be along shortly. In the meantime, if you haven't done so already, I would highly recommend downloading and installing Unity and having a look around : Unity - Game Engine

Hey there @Bleash

What is your experience with Unity 3D and what is your area of interest?

Also, be sure to check out our previous demo and POC releases.

Cheers,

JS

Hello JS,

I have no experience with unity 3D but I installed it yesterday and I've been watching some tutorials.

Like I said in my original post, I do have some experience with C# ( I have 8 years of professional experience in VB .net, C# is my go-to hobby language).

As far as interest area, I'm a mathematician and I work in finance so I believe I can be a good help for any combat and/or economic system you have.

But to start I would like something really simple so that I can get a feel of how it all works.

Thanks,

Bleash

We did have a mathematician/computer recent grad working on some trajectory code for the AI scripts that may be of interest to you.

However, I do want to establish some project ground rules, since this has been an issue with other keen developers in the past.

  1. You will need to do all your first stage project development either with one of the POC projects or created by you. We do not share the HoO source code and other assets until after we establish a good working relationship.
  2. If we are using an asset store component that does 80-90% of what we need, we will most likely continue to use that asset and perhaps have you make modifications.
    • We have no interest in having you write a completely new asset. However, item 3 below is open as well.
  3. We are open to source or license donations from other projects for use in HoO as long as:
    • the project is 80-90% feature complete or is in later stages of development
    • you are fine with us using any sourced asset licenses that are not single use
    • as well, we will certainly do our best to promote any contributions as appropriate
  4. I am open to making architectural project changes if you have the established experience or can show good reason to do so.
    • this point is here because there has been developers come in and the first thing they post is architecture diagrams

Working on this project should be fun and challenging and for most business facing developers a great learning experience.
  • I am very open to teaching and helping people so if you have questions please ask.
  • Generally I am quite busy but if you need we can also Skype.
  • Please pick something that is of interest to you even if it doesn't fit well with your skills.
  • Things will generally start out very slow as we get know each other, so be patient.
Let me know when you are ready to jump into doing some development.

If you are interested in taking over the AI cannon fire trajectory scripts, let me know. Otherwise, if you have some ideas for developing a game based economic system for trade, that may also be of interest.

Cheers,

JS

Hey,

Yes, I would absolutely love to help with the cannon fire AI trajectory scripts.

Don't worry about the rest. I'm here to help as best I can and not to complicate things.

Since I'm new to unity it would probably be best if I work on a new project.

What can you tell me about whats done on the cannon AI trajectory scripts? Whats left to do?

Meanwhile, I'm gonna keep doing some tutorials to try and learn some of the basics.

Ok, great.

Let's start out fairly basic with the project and then developing the trajectory script.

  1. Just start out with a new project and import the prototyping standard asset.
  2. Build a simple cannon from a cylinder and block, if you want you can put wheels on it.
  3. Create a simple cannon fire script that shoots a sphere from the end of the cylinder. Make sure to setup the scene using physics rigidbodies and have your script fire the ball using rigidbody.addforce.
After you get that setup or have any questions at all just let me know.

We can then start to discuss the parameters of the trajectory script.

@Bleash, I have added you as a Provisional Programmer, you should now be able to access the Development forum. Welcome aboard mate!

Hello there again,

Thagarr,
Yes, I have access now. Thank you.

JS,
OK, I'm gonna give it a go and I'll let you know when I have something worth seeing.
Where is the right place to give you some feedback? Should I keep posting here or is it better to create a new post in the Programmers sub forum?

Bleash

Hello,

It's done. I love it and I think its pretty cool for a first time try.
Just need to know how and where to share it.

Thanks,
Bleash

That was quick work, nicely done mate! I reckon it is probably best to post a new thread in the Development forum, unless @JohnSilver would rather have it posted somewhere else. Go ahead and post it there for now, we can move it if we need to. :onya

@Bleash just send me a private convo or as Thagarr said post a new thread.

Either way just let me know where you put it.

I see my email alerts stopped working again, so I will be sure to check the site manually more frequently again.

@JohnSilver, you can find his post HERE.

I should have suggested that he tag you in it so you could find it easier, that didn't occur to me at the time though. :facepalm
