Hi all,

As we develop New Horizons Remastered, we try to keep an eye on performance to make sure new features or assets don't adversely affect gameplay too much. However, we only have access to a limited number of PCs to test on, so what works well on our machines might not work well on others.

So, I'd like to ask everyone who has played the latest release to post their impressions of the game's performance on their respective PCs. This would be hugely helpful for us to find out if we're on the right track.

Please include this information in your posts:
  • The screen resolution and graphics quality settings you use (these are selected in the Configuration screen when you launch the game)
  • Your PC specs, including:
    • CPU
    • Graphics card
    • RAM
    • Operating system
  • The platform version of the game (x86 or x64)
  • Average framerate in different scenarios (if you don't use a framerate counter, just describe how the game runs, e.g. smoothly, juddery etc.)
When you're playing the game, try to consider the following points:
  1. How well does the game run in each location? Do any locations have noticeable framerate drops?
  2. Do you experience any performance drops when the lights are on at night?
  3. Is the overall performance acceptable?
Lastly, please make sure you are running version 0.1.1.21 or newer (check the main menu).

Thanks for your help.

Well, I'll get this rolling.

I play at 2560 x 1440 and use the Fantastic setting, the X64 version, and I found the version number in "changelog" in the main menu. My puter specs are in my signature.

The first thing I noticed was the new sky. Huzzah!! Frame rate was 60-61 as I walked around the waterfront, but after a bit it dropped into the 40s. Dunno why. Wandered around the town and visited the tavern. There was lots of gambling going on but no people (yet).

The trees at night look white for some reason. I do miss the rats, lizards and bugs running around, especially the bugs around the lanterns.

Talked to Rys Bloom then went and killed meself. From there I went out on the dock intending to go sailing. While looking around I noticed that the lamp and its pole were ghosting and leaving trails. Got a screenie and came here to post about it. Possibly it has something to do with the low frame rate.

Resolution: 3440x1440
Graphics Quality: Fantastic

Specs:
CPU - i7-5820K 3.30GHZ
Graphics card - Nvidia GTX 980 SLI
RAM - 16GB
Operating system - Windows 10 Pro

Game:
x64 Version

Town:
- 80+ FPS, Smooth, regardless of location

Port:
- 40fps from top of Port looking out to sea.
- 50-60+fps looking anywhere but the sea.
- 55fps part sea, part land.
- 42fps directly out to sea from dock.

Ship deck:
- 60+ fps looking towards land.
- 45+ fps looking towards sea.

Sailing: Similar to above

Performance remains constant regardless of night/day.
Overall, smooth, no issues.

Was it like that when looking at the ocean or sailing? The ocean is probably the most graphically intensive part of most scenes.

The trees at night look white for some reason.
Yeah, I noticed that too. It might be related to the shader they're using; there's another shader type we could try to see if that helps.

That seems to be something to do with the procedural clouds. I saw the same "ghosting" on the ship's masts at sea when it was cloudy.
I'm not sure if this is a known bug with the sky asset or something else entirely.

After my first post I went back and went to sea. Frame rates were in the 50s at night and then dropped into the 40s when the sun came up. Gun smoke made no difference.

No, I didn't notice any ghosting anywhere else. Overall frame rates are down from the last version.

I'm liking this Unity engine. It doesn't use much memory and spreads the load over all the cpu cores, but really dumps on the video card like all modern engines do.

Just to show it graphically here are the loads on my system while sailing around during the day. And yes the poor little Fury is pegged like that in all modern games.

Yeah I'm spamming this thread but need to get this down while it's fresh in me alleged mind. :pirate07:

This is a new system that I'm running and it is better now after some more tweaking than it was 2 days ago. So....

Frame rates at sea areas low as 40fps at night and as high as 55 fps during the day. Generally somewhere around 50.

There is a problem with the health bars of the ships as they appear all over the place while sailing around the island.

Then the island would disappear every morning. New Horizons Remastered_2017_09_16_15_45_44_386.jpg

The ghosting did not appear at first but when the heavy clouds appeared it showed up and stayed until it rained, and then it went away. Frame rates went up when it rained too.

There is a "gap" at the horizon and frame rates go down when looking in that direction. New Horizons Remastered_2017_09_16_19_58_08_903.jpg

Overall the day/night cycle is too fast, but it does show off the dynamic sky quite well. Frame rates did not change when speeding up or slowing down the game, but the ambient sounds did change.

Think i got everything. :dance

Interesting. Good reporting, @Hylie Pistof .

Giving that the frame rates aren't consistent over day/night cycles and that the frame rates went up when it was raining, is it possible that the frame hit is caused by the procedural clouds? If there's a way to turn them off completely to test, that might be useful.

Yeah, that's a known issue I'm looking into.

That just seems to be a morning fog effect.

There is a "gap" at the horizon and frame rates go down when looking in that direction.
Not sure why that happens, but it might be to do with the clouds.

The transition speed is deliberately high in this build to demonstrate the full cycle quickly. It will be slowed down to a more acceptable rate in the next build.

The weather can be manually set to remain constant; currently it's on a random cycle. I could try running some tests internally, or release a later build with fixed weather and get some more feedback then.

  • The screen resolution and graphics quality settings you use: 1360x768. Graphics in Fantastic

Well first of all I run the game on 1920x1080 on Fantastic mode and what can I say the game runs smoothly enough (I believe between 110-120 FPS)
Processor
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz

Video Card
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

RAM
16 GB

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 10 (build 15063), 64-bit

The platform version of the game I use is x86 and I believe between 110-120 FPS, really fast and smoothly looking
I didn't noticed any frame drops so far but will report if I see any. the lights are pretty much great although one thing I noticed in the night Nathaniel's hands darken at night, probably somthing to do with the shadows at night.
But overall the game is more then acceptable consider the circumstances. Very pleased :)

Thanks for all the reports so far; keep them coming! :cheers

Those of you running the x86 version on 64-bit Windows: please try the x64 version of the game instead, as you may see minor performance gains.

His hand meshes have incorrect normals, so they do look slightly wrong. It's more noticeable in certain lighting conditions.
I may have to swap his hands for someone else's, as I tried fixing them before but they were broken again when re-bound to the skeleton.

Great start team.

I played the x64 version at 1920 x 1080 on "Fantastic" graphics settings.

PC Specifications:
- EVGA GTX 970 Graphics Card
- Intel i7-4790K
- 8GB RAM
- Win7 x64

Firstly, I wanted to say it bought me such joy when I saw the announcement for the remastered edition. I've been playing Pirates of the Caribbean nearly since it's first release on Xbox. Then when I became part of the PC master race, I was thrilled when I found the PC version and the mods available from Pirates Ahoy! There is just not another pirate themed game like it so it will never get old. Please keep the mods rolling and keep up the the wonderful work. You will always have a dedicated fan here.

Onto the review:

I firstly noticed the new excellent lighting. That looks superb. Water is legitimate and I appreciate what the lighting does for the textures too. Only odd thing I found was the health bars of far away objects appearing in my line of sight every now and then (see picture). It appeared to run smoothly and loading times between zones was quick.

Keep up the stellar work. I'll be testing each new release as it comes out on Itch.io.

Resolution: 1920x1080
Graphics Quality: Fantastic

Specs:
CPU - i7-6700K @ 4.00GHZ (8 CPUs)
Graphics card - Nvidia GTX 1050 TI
RAM - 16GB
Operating system - Windows 10 Pro

Game:
x64 Version
Windowed

Town:
- very smooth regardless of location.
- Camera likes to scroll in and stay quite close, which is a pain.
- Sometimes I collide with the laterns even though I'm clear under them.
-Mouse not fixed to centre of screen so can accidentally switch you to another window if you click.

Port:
- very smooth regardless of location.
- I see a random health bar off to the right.
- Camera likes to scroll in and stay quite close, which is a pain.
- talking to rys it's very hard to see selected dialogue option
because the text is either white or slightly off white.
- fighting is fine.
-Mouse not fixed to centre

Ship deck:
- very smooth again
-Mouse not fixed to centre
- If the Camera comes in close it stays close

Sailing:
- again very smooth, not noticeably slow anywhere
- I see healthbars of the 2 ships sometimes pop in and out if I'm looking directly away from them
- Camera scrolls very close to ship if it's underwater
-Mouse not fixed to centre

Performance remains constant regardless of night/day.
Overall, smooth, no issues regarding framerate, some issue with healthbars, scrolling camera, and mouse.

Hello, can I please request the 64Bit Linux build? I'm having some issues with Mesa (open source AMD drivers) and the 32bit build. I'll post my issues in depth later, but I just wanted to hopefully get the ball rolling on a 64bit build. Thank you for your time.
