A Big, Big doubt.

This post start from far.

Time ago I was a strong Mount and Blade player, and with creates mods I started a "family history" using this game, starting with a Angle in VI century Britannia, and making other characters in other ages that was descendant of this Angle.

Now PotC-NH is more, more wonderful and close to my heart than M&B was, probably for my insane passion for pirates and all that come around this world-sea, galleons, ships, sea battles, and so on- and now a BiG Doubt is come to my poor, devasted mind.

Help me before I will be sent in some asylum, please....

Choice 1:
Start only a single characte in a chosen era, trying to be more or less like myself and open a great adventure between sea, isles, and the smoke of cannons and musket, choosing my own way and becomeing someone;
-----
Choice 2:
Make a "campaign" starting with a character that will be the "Family Founder" in XVI century, then after have done with this, continue with their "descendants" until XIX century.

Of course each character will live no more than 20 years (a lot of time, and probably will be halved, because with a live of adventure and perils I think that health take his toll):

I will use
- 1d6 for see in which period end the campign (I suppose that the family hasn't no more heirs, or be decimated by natives, or colera, or settled peacefully elsewhere);

- 2d10 for give each a time to become someone or die in the attempt,

- 3d10 for the time that must passing before a suitable heir will start a new life in the Caribbean (after all not all sons are like the fathers, but nephews or grandnephews may have some interest to pair thier grand-grandfather acts of valour)

At the longer chance, the campaign will end some years after the Congress of Vienna: at this time piracy will be eradicated more or less everywhere, and Morgan, L'Olonais, or William Kidd are gone with their legend.
-----

Give me advice, me harties, better the first choice (single char) or the second (campaign)?

Help me!

If you have a lot of time on your hands, I would say choice 2! it sounds like some of the great crusader kings 2 games I've had, but that moves at a different time scale than this xD otherwise, choice 1 is always a safe bet which will surely be a lot of fun too! :sail

Choice 1 is the one I made as I skip around a bit in the earlier time periods and don't like the later periods so much.

Choice 2 is a good choice if you do want to play all periods. My personal record is 17 game years with my last game lasting 12 years. 20 years at sea is a long long career any way you look at it. You can race through it by using the world map or take your time and direct sail. The choice is yours.

Usually I like set my adventures in 1617 and 1717.

The first is a century of big adventures, Musketeers time, D'Aertagnan, Louis XIII, the cardinal Richelieu, and so on. Also, Caribbean and Americas aren't totally discovered, and are again a world full of surprises.
The second, because 1700 is the Lamps Century: there are many progresses, start the Illuminism, many discocveries are made in science and medicine, but also there are again things to do for adventurers....

I never tried XVI century in PotC-NH-but I tried in "Sid Meier's Pirates!" and I remember that more or less 80% of Americas are Spanish, then this can annoy a player because miss good adversaries like English, French and Dutch, but I have an interest as discoverer and explorer of a zone-Americas-that for many people was only a dream, or a land beyond their possibilities, then can be some chance to play.

For my first single character campaign I will choose this character:

Era: Golden Era of Piracy
Starting date: October 9, 1717
Character: sir Ambrose FitzPelican, British Navy Officer, detached into the British colonies of the New World.
For the honor of our King, and the Queen underpants...ehm, and the glory of Our Gracious Sovereign George I and the British Navy, by Jove! A-hem, may I have some other tea, please?

One of the things that I liked a lot in this game is become part of a regular army-in this case, Navy. Be military, obeyu and be obeyed, doing right things, fight the chaos-and pirates are really caothic.
Also, British has a fame of hardened and loyal soldiers and mariners, they obey without a word, and has also all these usual curious ways to be.
I think to play with a nice cup of tea near me- I love tea, also in real.

Mr. Christian, signalling to these pirates to wait for shoot volleys until we have taken our tea, please...

For the Campaign, here's my results:

PotC-NH Campaign

2 Eras: (Early Explorers) (The Spanish Main)
Starting date: October, 9, 1517
Family Founder: Ambrosius Pellicano, Italian explorer in the service of His Catholic Majesty the King of Portugal(*)(**)

The second character probably will be a merchant, but I don't know if he will be Portuguese again-depends to what happen to the first character, if he settle in some other place, the new character will become a member of that nation.

(*)= An Italian has discovered this world, then is rightful that also an Italian will explore the new-found continent ;)
(**) There's a saying in Italy "Portoghese non paga tasse" (Portuguese people don't pay any tax) then me seem a great choice starting with a so highly liberal king -no levies, no taxes, only gain!
(Hahah, with this phrase I resemble Uncle Scrooge :p)

Option 3 = option 1 + option 2.
Start with your choice of character in your choice of period, preferably one of the earlier periods. Play the game as long as you like. Become rich, famous, and get the highest title from whichever nation you like - basically, option 1. Then start a new game in the next period up, choose and name your new character to be the successor to the first, and now you're on option 2.

I think if you plan to do a run through several eras, it's better to limit yourself. If you do too much with your first character, you'll find the next character doing the same things you've already done and it can get repetitive fast. Choose your sidequests carefully, so you don't have to repeat many of them with each character. For example, if your first character is a explorer, you can focus on treasure search quests, which will take you all across the map landing on deserted beachs and exploring caves and jungles to your heart's content. The next character can focus on different kinds of quests.

Homo eructus strike! a + for you!

Also I have seen that some careers meseem good than others.
British Navy is better than pirating life, and Merchant is a very suitable way to live for meself.

The different careers are a fairly new feature and we have never really had a lot of feedback on that.
So anything you could share would be most interesting!

Are you saying that pirating is not an easy life and may not be worth it?
If so, I'd be very curious why and what might logically be done to make that more attractive.

Some people might simply prefer to play a character who does his raiding legally. ;)

Piracy has the advantage that you don't care about the rules on what you're allowed to attack. You don't have to worry about being branded a pirate due to attacking the wrong targets if you are, in fact, a pirate. :rpirate You can get promotions by joining the mythical Brotherhood, though such an organisation governing all the piracy in the Caribbean is somewhat unrealistic and I don't tend to bother. (Mind you, a preference for realism doesn't stop me from helping myself to someone's battleship and then looting forts, which for a pirate is just as unrealistic as the Brotherhood but is a lot of fun!)

But generally, I prefer privateering. You're not bound by the rules of the navy, though you do need to be careful not to attack targets not covered by your LoM. Especially if you take multiple LoM's. That has the risk of being caught out by changes in international relations, and the benefit of earning promotions from several sources at once, not to mention charming the nieces and daughters of the governors of most of the Caribbean. :D

If you like the navy life, try your luck with the "Hornblower" storyline. That's where the whole idea of naval gameplay started out.

Unrealistic, sure. But it's "truth in fiction". :cheeky

Effectively that is just getting a Pirate LoM.
You get promotions then too and the occasional reward.

You should even be possible to do that AND get a real LoM at the same time.
Then you can pretend to be a shady Privateer.

I have seen this strange BlackFriars "Brotherhood" and really I don't understand anything.

Now I have started my HMS officer, and I'm happy of him. Law against Chaos. Laws are made by King, and must be obeyed, by Jove.

Well, another bit of real myself now: my fencing master (YES, I was a fencer when I was young, and my weapon was the sword) said that I was good not as attacker, but as defender.

Really I have seen that this is also my usual way: defend and reply, than attack.

This bring me to see as a good thing a Merchant life: not attack targets, but defend from them: with some good ships like Polacca, Fluyt or Pinnace, I can hold and take at bay many menaces like pirates using the classical battle line tactic: my and other ships guns fire will be something like a folating Battery than shoot a hell of fire and balls against greedy pirates.

Not bad, mmh?
