WIP HMS Indefatigable (1784) frigate - take 2

Well, I want to somehow make up for supplying literally a wrong ship the last time :D
Indeed that high-quality high-detail very real-looking ship you made last time was the worst!
You definitely need to apologize for that. TWICE! :razz

Sarcasm totally intended. ;)

I specifically don't say so.

Thanks :) I do hope we find some niche for the old model when this one will be complete, as she is still a nice ship.

The one negative effect this had on me - I became, I think, too cautious, fearing to go somewhere wrong again.
On the other had, I have much more reference material at the moment.

The obvious solution is to keep that one for general use. Replace the specific "HMS_Indefatigable", but keep the "RN_Indefatigable", "FR_Indefatigable", etc. Do you plan to create a walk file for this ship so that it can have crew wandering around on deck?

Then the accurate model of HMS Indefatigable can be made very specific, as "HMS_Victory" is already. Disable buying and random encounters, so it's only available for the "Hornblower" storyline or as a promotion ship for a specific character. Not Hornblower in FreePlay mode - he has his own development path already, based on the books. But Captain Sir Edward Pellew really existed, had a very interesting career, and could be made into a playable character, in which case he'd get the "Indy" as his captain level promotion ship.

:checklist (that smiley is definitely turning my favourite, since I feel very much alike)

Main wale, markings ready for side rails...

And a real rotating gunport.

Cut the gun ports on the main gun deck (which is confusingly called the upper deck), and that reaches the point where two versions (frigate and the two-decker) of the ship part ways.
The hull is now razeed, and I placed the deck plans (surprisingly they fit in just fine).

Now the most difficult task is to avoid the temptation of quickly putting back all the parts from the previous model :)

Instead, I am going to recreate the inner works to certain extent, as - again, surprisingly - it gives much better understanding of how the whole ship is built as a structural system.

For reference - the current face count hovers around ~26k triangles, which is no that much, if you think of it. Ropes will eat more.

Looking just grand! Really love the attention to detail you are paying it.:)
Have you checked out the FTP for parts yet? Some on there could be quite useful for the interior/decks.

@Martes, I've sent you the login details via PM. You can use an FTP client such as FileZilla to access the ship parts in the Hearts of Oak > Ship Parts folder.
Some of the parts on there are too high-poly for our needs, but there are still several that may be of use to you.

While trying to figure out how the powder magazine looks like from the inside (Indy has an interesting floor-and-a-half hold configuration, different from ships of the line and most of the frigates both, with the closest, not exactly similar, but fairly close, being the way Trincomalee was built, but it's still hardly decipherable, despite all the photos I have seen), I loosely placed the head details from Endymion (those required a certain amount of scaling, stretching and repositioning) and stern gallery from the previous model. There is still much work there to be done, tweaking and connecting the parts, but the general arrangement is there. And you can appreciate the elegant tumblehome of the hull.

Finally, there is a new figurehead.
I didn't find a complete Greek warrior in armor, but I think this bust of Alexander may fit just as well. :)

For clarification - I did download and took a very close look at the hold of HMS Unicorn model, but the magazine there is completely enclosed, with the light room lost somewhere inside, so I that does not answer my question. If anybody has more detailed drawings of the hold of both Trinco or Unicorn, they would be greatly appreciated.

I agree that the figurehead suits the ship quite nicely :)

I can't say I have much advice about the powder room as I've never included any on my ships-in storm engine games the water flows through the hulls so it is not worth making anything below the waterline. Maybe the anatomy of a ship series books on the Diana of 1794 or the Bellona would have something more detailed than the NMM plans?

She looks quite elegant already!

Both Diana and Bellona (as well as the book about Pandora, which has wonderful isometric views), unfortunately, have distinctive separation between the orlop and the hold, but I am trying to extract all I can from there. :)

Most likely I will seal the upper deck hatches and remove everything inside before conversion to POTC, but I want to have a version with all the ship's insides still - for NHR, at least, or wherever it may be used.

Thanks! So different from the previous bathtub, and she does make an impression of a large and powerful frigate.
