It depends upon whether you like to do trading and town management. I think Port Royale 2 is more like that than SMPirates.

Isn't there a demo for PR2? I know there was one for PR... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> That way you can SEE what you purchase before you shell out your `hard-earned` money... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

I love the Ascaron games tho I favor Patrician over the Port Royale series - was a deeper game. Pirates! is great fun but its a bit more PlaySkool than Port Royale - I quickly bumped right up to Swashbuckler and have only ever lost 2 swordfights and never lost a ship battle. There are also some glitches in Pirates - for instance, ships can sail right through eachother - not so in PR. PR is a LOT more micromanagement but that is the fun of the game. It is not a First Person game like Pirates. So if you like setting up complex trade routes, growing towns, establishing complex relationships and eeking out a profit by making minute adjustments in a growing business, PR is your game. If you prefer a more laid back game with more role playing flavor and adventure as a captain rather than a entrepenuer then Pirates is your game. I own both and enjoy them for different reasons.

At 34, I am more into games that are pure "fun" rather than working on trading spreadsheets all day.

Ask yourself why you buy games. For me the answer is simple. To have fun.

My vote: Sid Meier's Pirates.

yeah

but thats why people have got tastes....
so they can choose there own type of games <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
i love trading and making towns and battle on sea...
so i think selling pirates and buying port royal 2....

thanks to all mates.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

So why did you ask us what our "tastes" are? You asked an opinion, I gave it. PR2 is a good game, but I challenge anyone to tell me it is more "fun" than Sid Meier's Pirates.

If you think PR2 is for you then buy it.

i have Sid Meier's Pirates( first person game of fighting, and sea battles with trade ) and i love it. I haven't tried PR2 but I have seen the trailers for it (management game)and hands down Sid Meier's won my vote but both maybe great to have.

I tried playing this again and the fun just doesn't come back. Well, I guess PotC still it is! :aar:pflag:razz

That is funny, I JUST reinstalled it and went through a game last weekend. I still love that game.

I did the 'new' one that I got on Steam for like $1. I can't get the old one to run stable on anything anymore no matter what emulator I run.

I played Sid Meier's Pirates some years ago, don't played Port Royal much. Sid Meier's Pirates has some draw backs, but my vote for it.
My 1st choice would be POTC, 2nd Sea Dogs(with mod), 3rd Sid Meier's Pirates. Don't played Age Of Pirates or Assassion's Creed yet.

Dancing part of Sid Meier's is a nightmare :shock can't travel in or outside town, which I don't like. Treasure collection is not realistic... etc. For me its like playing inside a box(just my feeling) I like it coz sea battle is good.

I like Sea Dogs & it's mod. Nice graphics, sea & land battle is good. At least I can travel inside town but can't travel outside, which is bad. Another bad thing is no options for items(weapons, tools etc). A pirate game but without some choice of blades or guns is really bad.

And POTC & NH :bow fulfilled all that draw backs. Just need some tuning & work with some storyline.
:cheers

I like Pirates! because of the simplicity of it. Sometimes it is nice to just run around and blow stuff up. Also, the dancing gets pretty simple and can lead to good treasure and missions. It is a bit tedious but can be somewhat challenging when it switches the dance every 2 iterations to a fast music, lol.
