I want to help with writing music

Hello, my name is Vladislav. I live in Ukraine, so I don't know English good. Sorry if somewhere in text will be a mistake.

I love sea, ships and music, so I want help in creating this game very much =) I can write music in different genres: symphonic, acoistic, etc.

But in common I write heavy compositions, so for this time I have not much music, as could be used as soundrack or font music.

Today I writed a piece for example, it is here: https://vk.com/public91262695 (called "evening").
Other tracks there are my drafts too.

I'll be very glad to help.

Ahoy there!

Just listened to your "Evening" track. Sounds nice and relaxing. :cheeky

In any case, @Flannery is our music coordinator and he should post here soon.

Ahoy! And greetings vlad!

I apologize for the late reply - I was away on travels when I read your post - but could not listen to it before I came home.

I listened to "Evening" and all your other drafts, and you clearly have talent.

At its current states, none of them are usable of course from it's roughness and the lack of stereo enhancements and use of reverbs and equalizers - mixing and mastering.

But I definitely see potential there.
I would like to hear your work again when you have progressed to something close to a final composition - and then we can decide if it will make it into the game as a whole - or if we would like to use parts of it.

How does that sound to you?

OK, I'll write you when prepare the composition.

But I will need consulting about melody: work with it further or not.

I don't accustomed to work with such kind of compositions, so also I'll need such tips: too much drum or too little violin.

Alright :)

I will sit down tomorrow and break it down completely and give you my thoughts and tips ;-)

Hey Vlad!

First off:
What equipment and software are you working with? (Cubase, Logic, Pro-tools and so on + Sample extensions)

I have been listening to Evening some more, and here are my suggestions, and hints & tips:

The start is working well enough - but it needs to progress some. And for the sake of the experimenting and in the name of learning - lets make it longer.
I am not saying it would not work as a small piece as it is, cause it could definitely do so. But it is nice to try more angles first.

1 - Elaborate more on the theme, you have a nice start, now make alternative versions of the melody with "twists" or small changes. Make more than you need, and keep the ones you like ;)
2 - Maybe add another instrument as additional melody maker, which can intertwine with the lead flute melody - where they shift on having focus. This further out in the piece of course.
3 - I have always had a sweet spot for the cello, so love that you are having that in ;) Such a nice atmosphere tone setter - Maybe make it even a little more visible?
Basically you could play with making the cello take over the focus as main melody for another theme in the piece somewhere - thus adding to the dynamic of the piece - keeping it interesting.
4 - Maybe add more strings very vaguely in the background as the piece progresses?
5 - The melody starts off very nicely, with a few odd, but interesting turns here and there - but midway I feel it looses its intention, and that the tones seem more like "just placed somewhere to have sound" - very much like placeholders.
Even with simplistic melodies - they need to have a identity and presence. Especially the simpler ones - as it can easier be hidden away if the melody is complex. I feel it looses that identity and presence in the middle of it. But that is of course only personal preference ;)

hope this gives you something to work from, and I will be looking forward to hear from you with new results to listen to soon :)

OK, thank you for tips, I'll work with it.

I use LMMS under Linux Mint 17 and Jack audio server, sampler - Kontakt 5.

I have not used the cellos, maybe you hered their sound in Yamaha Motif ES (Ensemble Strings/05 EnsMix), guitars are taken from there too. Or maybe the sound of cellos was in the part of Legato Ens Vlns in Otc (Symphobia 2). Or, maybe, the similarity to the cellos sound for you was heared in combination: violins (from Orchestral Tools Symphonic Sphere) and bass (from Orchestral Tools Symphonic Sphere too) (i think that it is a sound of contrabass), after mixing of higer and lover frequences the sound is hearing like a celloes. I do not understand the ensemble instruments good, sorry =)

All my plugins for kontakt are here: https://pp.vk.me/c623325/v623325298/294de/Ltbvmsm5MGI.jpg
LMMS: https://pp.vk.me/c623325/v623325298/294e7/nuS7NUd4g3U.jpg

I had a little of time yet, but I'll try to make them better soon.

Ah I see.

It just resembles a cello - because the tone is too low for a violin I believe, så I thought it was a cello being played high instead ;-)

Looking forward to hear your progress :)
