I really like the Medieval period
Grand Ages: Medieval seems to be a kind of Civilization. And no doubt, a game world of over 20 million square kilometres is impressive.

But, I prefer a game like Mount & Blade warband (and some of its mods!! :cheeky) for this time period.

Aye, me too mate! 20 million square kilometres ...that is a LOT of territory to conquer and plunder!
nainshache.gif

I understand exactly what you mean about Mount & Blade, sometimes you just have to get the feel of doing the dirty work, I certainly enjoy it myself from time to time. I do like the feel of command of everything that games like Total War and Age of Empires II gave you though. I wish Ensemble would have just improved on the games mechanics and graphics instead of just moving forward to a completely different era in AOE III. I still play the updated Steam version of AOE II from time to time.

I don't mind resource gathering, I just don't much care for micromanaging resource gathering. Micromanaging combat though is what I do best. I have also always immensely enjoyed building fortresses and testing their defences, this one looks to give the most realistic terrain I have seen in this type of game to date. I am really looking forward to creating an unassailable mountain fortress! I just hope they get the combat at least manageable. I played Grand Ages Rome, and while it was ok, it didn't give me the feel of control I was looking for.

I liked Medieval Total War but I played much more AOE II.
I even made in that time a campaign for this game:rolleyes:

AOE II, eh? Is been a long time since anyone here mentioned a game I played a lot as well.
Good fun, that was! I quite like its sequel Age of Mythology too.

If you haven't tried the updated Steam version of AOE II, I highly recommend it! There is something about this game that just makes it so enjoyable, even after all the years I have played it.

I remember playing many, many player made maps that were just incredible, well thought out and challenging beyond beliefe. There was also a player built AI script that was just brutal and almost impossible to beat! I know I am expecting to much, but I am really hoping this game is at least half as good as AOE II!

What did they update on this Steam version?
I've got the regular release.

The main improvements are for graphics and engine enhancements, but I think they did a bit of work with the AI and a few other things too. They also added multiplayer support, though I haven't tried that in the Steam version. I was getting my butt kicked enough by the game in single player! :wp

There is also an expansion which I have not tried yet that adds a few civilizations and campaigns.

  • Seven new Campaigns

    • Bari: 400 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy is still up for grabs. Relive the tale of the port city Bari from the point of view of a Byzantine family, rising from the common soldiery to the nobility. Beware, for not only Bari is at stake, but also control of Southern Italy.
    • Dracula: History forged an incredible legend around the man who ruled Wallachia in the mid-14th century. And does he have the strength to stop a full-scale Muslim invasion from the west?
    • Battles of the Forgotten: Time has faded the names of many of the greatest leaders ever known. During their age they were famed for their fierceness on the battlefield, their just rule and their quest for power. Witness the path to glory of Richard the Lionheart, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Sultan Osman Ghazi, Khosrau and many more.
  • New LudaKRIS map size
  • Twitch.tv streaming integration
  • Spectator mode
  • New Game Modes
    • Treaty - Popularized in later titles, the economically focused “Treaty” gametype will be available in AoF. Also commonly known as “No Rush”, Treaty mode enables a limited duration of battle-free early growth before focusing on military might.
    • Capture the Relic - For a quick paced, action oriented battle the new “Capture the Relic” will see players rushing with their monks to take control of a single treasure and return it safely to base.

As of right now, you can get both AOE II and The Forgotten expansion on Steam for $24.99 US HERE!.

As a heavy M&B player, an Total War addict (especially Medieval) with all versions and even thousands of hours with Total War Third Age (massive and fantastic Lotr mod). The Anno series, Guild I and II and on and on and on... :p

My addiction for these kinds of games goes all the way back to the early days of Command & Conquer, Empire Earth, AoE and Cossacks.... And of course Settlers :p

Grand Ages: Rome was definitely a good one with allot of depth, so I definitely had to get this one being a utter and total Medieval fanatic to the brink of Ludacris.

Sadly though - I was a little disappointed...

The game looks fantastic and feels nice - and as a trading and diplomacy game it truly is a good one.

But to me there has to be at least a minimum of quality over the military aspect of the game as well... And here I feel this game is totally lacking in all aspects...

I actually ended up playing Total War: Atilla instead as it has all round good system which the TW games have become known for - AND it gives me the same map - and it allows me to play as Vikings.... *pokes @Thagarr * :p

I will play GA: Medieval more to give it a real fair chance, but the almost comic and super simplistic military system does put a big damper on it for me personally

I have played it just for a little while myself, I pre-ordered it a few weeks ago. I haven't really got far enough in to it to give an opinion yet, I am a bit disappointing to hear about the military aspects. Though I will still give a good testing when I get the chance. I have played most of the games that you reference above, and the Anno series is awesome, though I haven't played the latest version set in the future, and really have no desire to. My all time favorite though is Age of Empires! 20 years on and I still play it occasionally!!

I have been pretty busy lately, and what little free time I have has been taken up with Cities Skylines: After Dark expansion, sadly, no military aspect there. If you haven't checked out 0 A.D. lately, you should give that one a look too mate! :onya

I still haven't had much time to play this one, but this press release sounds promising for when I finally get the chance to do so!

Free Version 1.1 Update 'Siege & Conquest' for Grand Ages: Medieval Out Tomorrow

New features, fixes and improvements take the fight for Europe to the next level

Bracknell, UK, 18th November, 2015 Attention, emperors and empresses! The world of Grand Ages: Medieval is being updated to version 1.1 ‘Siege & Conquest’, bringing with it some exciting new improvements and additions that will enhance warfare and add new options for expanding your empire – all completely free of charge! Releasing on Thursday 19th November via Steam and the Kalypso Launcher for the PC version (PS®4 release date TBC), the new update will coincide with an exclusive developer livestream on the Kalypso Media Twitch channel, offering players an opportunity to see all the new changes in action and explained fully by the development team.

Headlining the new content is the addition of city walls, available in two varieties and designed to help protect against the loss of morale when your cities are being besieged, buying you time to get your defences organised. As with the rest of your city there is no need to micro-manage or change the walls as your city expands.

You know what they say – the bigger they are, the harder they fall – and the introduction of city walls means that a new weapon is available to aid in their destruction. The ‘Trebuchet Master’ is sure to help aggressive conquerors in speeding up their sieges and tearing down city walls. But be careful – these powerful units can’t defend themselves…

As well as these improvements to land-based activities, the open seas will also see some improvements in version 1.1. Colony ships are a pricey but immensely useful new unit can travel unlimited distances to help you spread your influence across continents. However, there are limits and even dangers to be found on the water – pirates will now roam the seas, desperately seeking undefended colony ships just waiting to be plundered!

Alongside the new features, the update brings with it a host of other changes, bug fixes and improvements. Check out the full changelog here. The livestream demonstrating the range of new features on offer in the update will be taking place on Thursday 19th November at 08:00 PST / 11:00 EST / 16:00 GMT / 17:00 CET here.
