Need Help Pc Upgrade

There is one other thing you could try, though I have really only ever experienced this particular problem on vendor machines, such as boxes from Dell or HP. For reasons of typical corporate greed, some manufactures edit their BIOS to not load if the CMOS battery is dead. There is a little button battery on your motherboard that keeps all the CMOS information from being lost every time the machine is turned off, since your computer is old, it is possible this battery is dead, you might try replacing it and see if that helps. :shrug

Just to follow up on this, I now have my new desktop built and working! Here are the specs:
  • Intel Core i7 4770K @ 3.5GHz
  • MSI Z97I AC motherboard
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600 MHz
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 Windforce OC with 4GB RAM
  • 240GB Sandisk SSD
  • Corsair CX430M PSU (because who doesn't want a PC powered by corsairs? :dance )
  • Thermaltake Versa H15 M-ATX case
  • ViewSonic 23" 1920x1080 IPS LED monitor
  • Windows 10 64-bit
The motherboard and RAM were generously donated by a friend, and I bought the CPU second hand from another friend, which I'm very grateful for!
I have yet to properly put the machine through its paces, but I'll be testing a multitude of games and applications soon (including HoO).

Intel CPUs benefit from more and faster ram so consider that for your first upgrade, especially considering the work you do with it. 2400 mhz ram will make a big difference.

I just looked and the 4770k is currently selling for $390 USD!

What kind of battery would I have to use and where is te place on my motherboard to replace it?
 
@TechnicJelle, take a look at the motherboard manual I posted the link for earlier mate, on page 17 it shows the complete layout and has numbers with arrows pointing to the important stuff. You can find it HERE! As for the battery, they can very by manufacturer, so your best bet is to remove the current battery and see what kind it is, then go buy an exact match, or use one of THESE handy charts to find an equivalent that will work.

@Armada, awesome mate, glad you got your new rig up and running! That 4770K is a great processor that still stands on it's own today, even against the new Skylakes. Even the thread count only gives the Skylakes about a 10% advantage, if that. There are some extra features in the 6700k, but I doubt you would miss them, and from what I have heard, some are a disadvantage. That GTX 960 is a good card as well. I am not really that familiar with MSI motherboards, but so far the one in my laptop hasn't given me any issues.

Since Intel really has no competition anymore, they aren't really even competing against themselves now. I am really hoping AMD actually has some competition coming out soon, but I am really not very optimistic, they seem convinced that console gaming is the future. :rolleyes:
 
Grumble grumble. I put my rig up against a guy with a 4790k, both overclocked and with the same video card, and in the same game we saw about a 3% difference in performance. That makes me feel pretty good when a $180 cpu can go head to head with a $340 cpu.
 
I don't dispute AMD is pretty solid with gaming, especially when using an AMD video card and chipset. :onya

Just don't compare the number crunching ability when it comes to things like rendering video, or 3D models. Once games are written to take advantage of some of the new features in Skylake though, those gaming numbers may change a bit as well.
As I have said before, I really am an AMD fan. I really want AMD to pummel the crap out of Intel with their next chips, I just don't see it happening. :shrug

That's what everyone was saying about AMD FX in 2012 and games are really just starting to use them efficiently.

It's true that AMD cannot compete with the top intel cpus in performance but they do quite well in consumer use once they are overclocked. I recently found out that AMD was aiming for 5 ghz stock. They obviously missed by a mile, but when they are overclocked to that level they really do come alive. They are not for everyone but they are a lot of fun to tinker with.

Everyone is holding their breath waiting to see how Zen does when it eventually comes out. That will make or break AMD. One little hint is that someone very close to AMD has suddenly started complaining about how slow FX is.
 
Yeah, that is a huge case that is best suited to watercooling and multiple video cards.

There IS one stick of ram that is difficult to get out and even harder to get back in...
 
Experiment 1: Get the GPU out of an old Paradigit. FAILED: Didn't fit
 
Expriment 2: One by one the RAM sticks: try 1 with the one being a little bit stuck: 1 long(ish) beep. FAILED: Doesn't do anything, not even beep

I have the same CPU! It's not the newest, but it's good. I think the graphic card is the best thing to invest regardint your specs (RAM is not as important as people think it is!).
