Story question

story in this game is optional, right? can I play the game and do/achieve everything in it without having to do story quests?

so even if I did the story quests to the end, could I continue the game and do whatever I want to do/achieve?

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure CoAS does not have an "end".
As far as I've heard, there isn't even an actual "main quest"; instead, it has a lot of long sidequests.

:yes

Yes - COAS is pretty much a sand box game - with quests as options ( if you want to play them you can, but it is not required)

@Pieter Boelen the "main quest" is the Peter Blood storyline. You can start as two different free play characters as well, and they have plenty of quests to keep them occupied.

There don't seem to be that many really short side quests, not like in TEHO.

thanks for your replies, I have already purchased the game on GOG (GOG ******* rocks) along with Caribbean Tales a few months ago
as a side question, do you get to purchase or get different clothing/armor or something like that to change your character's appearance?

That is just an opening before switching to Free Play, right?
I always understood CoAS is a Free Play game more than anything else.
Which is fine, of course. :cheeky

right so I found the answer to my clothes question and it apparently is no, except for a plate which lowers received damage
but another side question, can you just enter your ship's cabin at any time you want?
and as a side-side question, if it is possible in COAS, is it also possible in CT?

and as a LAST question, if I choose Peter Blood, can I join Spain/Netherlands/Corsair or Pirates or whatever or do I have to stay England?
and can I do whatever I want during the main quest and AFTER it?
someone please tell me

I think you have to stay as the nationality of the starting character you pick ( not absolutely sure though) :read - you can use trade licences / letters of Marque / false flags - to get into other nations ports.

( Just checked - Your nation is changed if you get a Letter of Marque/Privateers license - to the Nation that issued the license :yes - the nation symbol on the players character portrait on the F2> Character Screen changes)

The Peter Blood story is completed once you get the ship - then you can do what you want :yes

For the other starts - you can do what you want right from the start.

thanks
what about your ship's cabin? can you enter it freely at any time both in COAS and CT?

Not sure about CT - but in COAS I think you can enter the cabin from the menu of options when your on your ship's deck, at any time ( perhaps not when you are in combat)
