Perhaps it has to do with the #define EXTRA_HIT_CHECK " setting? "0: No, accidental hits won't cause hostilities" Or perhaps real cannons is turned off, I don't know it that would prevent hostility without raising enemy flag ... might be though

Solved Crashfix - kind of...

I use Avast. The first time I started the game after making the change, Avast flashed the warning of a possible threat but with insufficient data to verify. The options given included continue running the file. On subsequent game starts, Avast does not interfere.
