Age of Pirates - It's actually not that bad!

Hi there!

I thought it was about time I signed up on the PA! forum - you've got a heck of a good community here, and it's nice to see the full potential of PoTC still being realized after so long!

Alas, I'm stuck playing Age of Pirates as I've never owned PoTC, although a friend had a copy he let me play whenever I visited him - a while back, he said he'd give it to me if I paid him 5 bucks, but we had a bit of a disagreement, and PoTC never materialized - although the twit happily kept my money!

Anyways, I found Age of Pirates a week ago in a bargain bin along with Pirates!, and have found it to be pretty good with the SuperMod and some extra ships I found through a link on the forum - although I'm glad I didn't pay more than 10 bucks for it, as it certainly is NOT PoTC! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

On to my question: I was wondering if anyone has recreated the Lugger VML for Age of Pirates? I'd found a topic about this on the forum, but it seems like the model was never released. It's really the only ship I sailed in PoTC after it was put in the game, and I miss my ship! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

you should have seen the bermuda sloop. that one's really kick-ass. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> though i must say that the lugger VML looks stunning. i'm not familiar with AOP at all, unfortunately for you.

I actually had the bermuda sloop just before I captured a lugger VML, but the sloop had a rather inconvenient run-in with a sand bar after I assigned her to nigel blythe - and the dang stupid idiot had the gall to call himself a captain! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

I think you're better off not being familiar with AOP - if it had been the first Akella game I'd played, I wouldn't have given PoTC a second look!

If you CAN get PotC, I do recommend you do. If you could even "borrow" the CDs from your "friend", you can install it on your computer, then ZIP the files and you'd have it as well. The Build mod contains a no-CD crack, so you don't need the actual discs. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

As for the Lugger VML: I am not very familiar with AoP, but I do think you can put any PotC ship into AoP. You can find the PotC files in the Build mod. Then you'll have to figure out for yourself how to put the ship in AoP.

Hi Pieter!

I think I'll give my friend a call and see if he's willing to talk to me again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

The ironic thing about this is that I did find PoTC about three years ago in the local Wal-Mart for $7.88, but I assumed then that it was just some lousy movie promo product, and left it there - what an idiot I was!

I'll give moving the Lugger VML from the Build mod to AOP a try!

On a side note, would you or anyone else on here know of a store in Canada that sells Amazon.ca gift cards? I've found a few copies of PoTC on their website, but using a credit card isn't an option for me. I've heard that Safeway stores in the U.S. sell Amazon gift cards, but I've never found any in the stores nearby.

The only store I visited when I was in Canada was a book store in Vancouver. Good book store, if you're interested. They had all the Hornblower and Master & Commander books. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Did the store happen to be called Black Bond? As far as I know, it's our country's last independent book store chain. The nation-wide chain known as Chapters-Indigo has all but wiped out the competition.

Vancouver actually happens to be where I'm from, but sadly we moved to Edmonton, Alberta years ago - I miss the sea! All that's here is grass and pathetic excuses for tall buildings! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Did you happen to see any palm trees when you were there? Apparently, they've been planted everywhere as the climate can now support them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

The store was called "Chapters" and was on walking distance from the harbour, quite near the cinema. Good thing too; otherwise I couldn't have gone there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/user_comment.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="user_comment.gif" />
Nope; no palm trees. I did see them in the Caribbean though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

For the Dutchies under us. There is also a bookstore in Utrecht that sells those books. (Hornblower and Master and Commander) It is a big store, on a market. Near the station.

I've got all Hornblower books now. I ordered them from the Waterstone English bookstore in Amsterdam.

so, we're talking about books now? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/user_comment.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="user_comment.gif" />

Books about the Age of Pirates that are actually not that bad. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

i think that's a little liberal use of the topic title pieter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Chapters is probably the best book store here for anything involving the age of sail - the smaller stores seem to only carry whatever is considered "mainstream". The local library actually has piles of books like the Master & Commander series - I just finished "Captain Blood"; apparently, a boating club donated all of them!

@Morgan Terror: I could change the topic title if you want <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

naah, nevermind. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Is it just me, or does AOP crash more than PoTC? This game is driving me mad! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

On a side note, apparently one of the ship addons I put in the game also replaced the stock sounds with more realistic sounds - I failed to remember this late last night, turned the speakers all the way up (the stock sounds are somewhat "wimpy" and quiet), and let loose with a broadside from the Man O'War I'd captured yesterday. I damn near got blown out the window! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> I think every dog in a five block radius decided to wake up its owners after that! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Edit: Does anybody happen to have some extra eyeballs lying around - I just gouged mine out after watching one of the brothel videos <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

depends. the amount of crashes in PotC can depend on countless things.

yes, that rolling thunder tends to happen in PotC a lot too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> especially when you have a REALLY big battle.

The crashes in AOP seem to come from nowhere, and never happen (at least for me) in loading screens, like they usually did in PoTC. They mostly happen during sea battles, but never during boarding - which surprises me as there seems to be some boarding bug that afflicts quite a few of the other AOP players.

Also, Pieter's uhh..."suggestion" up near the start of this topic worked! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ninja" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" /> AOP won't be seeing much of me anymore in a little while! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
