Another crash at startup

Rundown:

Vista 32 bit
Intel Dual Core
nVidia 8700m gt

Over the last handful of days I've been trying to get POTC, Age of pirates, and Age of pirates 2 running. All of them crash at the beginning startup screen (spinning wheel, spinning skull). The closest I've gotten to actually playings was with Age of pirates, where I installed all the supermod and was able to get past character creation before it crashed (never got to play the game). Then I messed around some more (uninstalled supermod, installed official patch=crash at start, then went back to supermod but it still crashed at startup).

I've tried digging all through these forums but haven't found anything to help. I uninstalled k-lite codec pack. All the games are properly cracked. I just don't understand what's wrong. I updated video card drivers also to no effect, but have since went back since Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic doesn't work with new drivers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could any of the following apply to you?

<i>The game tends not to work if:</i>
- You have an Intel Onboard Graphics Card [workaround with <a href="http://www.transgaming.com/products/swiftshader/" target="_blank">http://www.transgaming.com/products/swiftshader/</a> - <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?s=&showtopic=12795&view=findpost&p=313453" target="_blank">more info</a>]
- Sometimes if you have Nero Burning ROM installed (get a "debugger" error message)
- You use ffdshow and don't have the game added to your "exception list"

The above is for Pirates of the Caribbean, but there's a good chance it applies to AoP and CoAS too.

The only one that partially applies is the Intel Onboard Graphics, because my computer has both Onboard and a dedicated card (Gforce 8700m gt). It only uses the dedicated card, however.

I get no "debugger" message.

ffdshow is not installed.

Partially applies? That sounds confusing. Can you be sure the game doesn't try to load with the Intel one?

I mean, I can't be sure what the game does, but dxdiag lists the Nvidia one. Also, I play other games on settings that simply wouldn't be possible with an Intel chip.

Can you somehow completely disable the Intel one? Disconnect it or something?
For whatever reason, these games REALLY don't like Intel graphics cards. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

You wouldn't happen to know how to completely disable onboard graphics would you?

See, I have an Alienware M15x laptop, and one of it's features is a dedicated GPU and an onboard GPU. There is simply a button to push, that will prompt you to restart with the other GPU. This is useful for saving battery life (using onboard graphics almost doubles it). However, I only game on power supply, so I'm usually booted with the dedicated GPU.

If there is a way to completely disconnect the integrated one, I would. However, I'm not sure if there is a way, since it is stuck to the Motherboard.

I was worried that it was a hardware issue since all three games have the same error.

I think you might be able to disable hardware through the Control Panel in what is called "Apparaatbeheer" in Dutch.
Not sure about the English name; something like "Hardware Management" I imagine.

The dedicated card is the only one that shows up there. Weird.

Are there any other problems besides graphics cards that could cause the problem?

The ones I posted above are the only ones I'm familiar with. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Well, thanks for help anyways.

If I can find a solution I'll be sure to post it to aid others.

Appreciated. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
