Battleships, colony capture, and other questions

I've played the stock AOP v1.5 quest to the point where the old pirate leader is dead (thank you GodMode) and I'm now expected to capture colonies. Well, my frigate is having a hard time taking down a fortress, especially given how easily a volley from a fortress can destroy my cannons. Can anyone help me out with a few questions?

- When do battleships begin to appear? Battleships, line ships, and man 'o war vessels should be much more effective against fortresses. I've fought lots of frigates and corvettes but not a single battleship has appeared yet. It looks like I need to capture a battleship before challenging a fortress.

- How do I keep my crew fully staffed? It's pretty frustrating that new crew members are so scarce at each port. I'm always short of sailors and cannoneers, especially when piloting larger vessels. It gets worse once you turn pirate - there's only one pirate colony (that I know of), making crew recruitment for a fleet nearly impossible. Is there some config file where you can adjust the number of hirelings in taverns?

- My cannons load painfully slowly. Fortresses rate-of-fire is about 1.5x times faster than my vessel. How high should I pump up the "Cannons" skill before hitting a fortress?

- How do I keep from losing a cannon every time the fortress fires on my vessel?

Lots of other bugs as well, reason for not playing stock game! Ships fear better if you're using the "GodMode".
Can't remember when the bigger ships appear! There is a walkthru in this here forum, which should give you a lot of hints! Try the Supermod, better, but still lots of bugs and crashes during seabattles. You have to save a lot!!
If you like playing the game without a story line the russian addon with Cap'n Drows translation is the one, but the quests need work. Some work and some don't! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Thanks! I had found a warship & line ship and I've begun conquering colonies. However, the game has gotten so utterly formulaic and boring that I've put it away. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Let's hope Akella redeem themselves w/ City of Abandoned Ships. The original SeaDogs was a labor of love and PotC is even better for its potential. AoP Caribbean Tales is more of a russian loaf the dev team pinched off in a hurry.
