Build 14 Alpha 8 WIP 2 PIRATE_KK

Thanks very much! I have just merged your work with my game. Now I can have a good time testing it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
HWMBO? Oh dear... I'm not being THAT dictatorial, am I? I don't mean to be. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

BTW: During the quest, Sir Christopher Mings even sits on the pier. LOL! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

By the way, if you talk to him again in the Pirate Residence after his main discourse - he nods off in there too!

If everyone agrees to the light hearted nature of this part of that quest - I have ideas for some of the rest of "the gang" too.
It will get more serious from then on though as the game proceeds. (but I will insert the odd quip from time to time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> )

I really like it so far, that I can tell you. Good job. Looking forward to the rest of it, actually. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
Personally I have nothing against a bit of lightheartedness. Perhaps the whole Beatrice quest can be a bit more lighthearted, while Hornblower would obviously be a lot more serious. That might give different types of players at least one quest to really enjoy. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Anyone else care to comment?

If anybody cares to have a look at it, I have uploaded my latest code here:
<a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/Build%2014%20Alpha%208%20WIP/19%20July%202008/PB%20Code%20with%20US.zip" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/Build%201...20with%20US.zip</a>
Included is Pirate_KK's latest code, Short Jack Gold's latest updates and my latest USA additions.
You need various RESOURCE files from the FTP to be able to actually play with this file, which can be found mostly in <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/potc/Thomas%20the%20Terror%20files/?M=A" target="_blank">Thomas' FTP folder</a> and <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/SJG%20POTC%2014.8%20WIP2%20Mods%20Jul08/SJG%20POTC%2014.8%20WIP2%20Jul%20Mods.zip" target="_blank">this file</a> from Short Jack Gold.

I tested the Jack Sparrow quest as far as I could and even fixed that weird error log message, but now I'm stuck because of the nation relations problem in my game. I have to get into Tortuga, but raising a pirate flag has no effect at all and as soon as I enter Tortuga port, not only does the fort start firing on me, but the game crashes as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I've had the same problem with Tortuga in the Bartolomeu Main Quest when you need to find some information about Nathaniel Hawk there. The unique solution I found was to add some code to change to friendly my relation with the pirate nation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />o)

It's a different problem in this case. I'm pretty sure in your case at least the game didn't crash, right? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
The problem is somehow caused by the work on adding the USA into the game and I'm hoping Pirate_KK can come up with a fix soon, because so far all my attempts have failed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

You may remember I got round it by sailing to Turks first - then on to Tortuga.
I know there is no logic - but if you're stuck see if it works - it might give you a clue. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Did you get a CTD to accompany it as well? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
Anyway, a QuestReloadToLocation in the console should get me through it until it's properly fixed.

I think that, that was a red herring - in a later version, the problem disappeared.

I recall the problem, but I think this is a different one. It doesn't apply just to the Tortuga pirates. Instead it seems that any flag change has no effect and CTDs occur very frequently in hostile situations. If you remember, I also get a CTD when firing on US ships when the US turn hostile. I think all these problems are related and have to do with the addition of the USA and the replacement of MAX_NATIONS with NATIONS_QUANTITY. But my trying to reset that change did no good either (game wouldn't start anymore). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I have now completely reset all USA changes in my game and this did solve the flag problem. Not the crash in hostile situations one though. I'm going to try and find out when that one was introduced.

I have now found out the problem dates back as far as my 14 July version. I'm going to try and find out the difference with the 25 June version and see if I can eliminate the problem.

It seems that the 14 July version is the one in which Pirate_KK tried to merge Maximus' code into his version. This rather complicates matters, because it is now <i>waaay</i> over my head. I hardly understand any of the changes that have been made, let alone how the problems got caused. Seems I again hit a dead end. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>QUESTION</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
As you might have gathered, I am leaving for another 6-month absence in just over a week. Before that time I would like to release another game version for you people to work from. The question though is what game version you would actually want and what it should be compatible with?

My latest game version contains Pirate_KK's, Maximus', Short Jack Gold's and Bartolomeu's latest code, as well as Thomas the Terror's latest modding work and some changes of my own. Unfortunately this version contains two pretty serious problems:
- Changing your flag has absolutely no effect (caused by the nation changes for the USA addition)
- A CTD when hostile ships are near (caused by the 14 July version, which contains the merge with Maximus' version)

Would you people want the latest version released, bugs and all, or do you want an earlier version, such as the 25 June version, with all latest stablish changes included?

The second question is what version it should be compatible with? The latest Build 14 Alpha has a lot of modifications to a lot of RESOURCE files, which mainly has to do with the new towns and soldier skins. For these modifications a lot of files were moved and renamed. This could, of course, be batched, but it is a lot of work to make such a batch file and I don't have that much time anymore. Alternatively I could provide instructions on how to do this manually, but this could be a fair amount of work on your part. The last possibility would be to make the file readily compatible with, say, Build 13 Final. This would make for a huge download though.

So does anyone hae any thoughts on any of the above?

For what it’s worth – I know the version I am working on doesn’t have the latest, latest, latest mods or some of the recent bolt on goodies and it does have some quirks, but I don’t have any CTD’s (other than when I screw the program up during modding <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> ) I don’t have any USA stuff in there (I think!) and I can (and have to change flags a lot – without any problems.) If played in a straight forward manner it works pretty well I think.

In the Couch Captain Charles Quest, the player has the option to fight with the fort at Jamacia. With the help of CCC, Merciless Mark and Thomas the Terror (just so as you know I had some big ships with me) I was able to defeat the fort and the town. I finally gave the town over to the pirates (to see what would happen) and low and behold when I went back to the port – there it was full of pirate ships, their flags fluttering in the breeze.

I mention this in case you think it might be worthwhile me uploading the whole version, as far as I’ve got, as an alternative. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

It is of course 6 GB in size. But if players have that capacity spare then they could download it as a stand-alone-game, no merging, or messing with the version they have. If you see what I mean. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

If you think that might confuse things more – no problem – it’s just a suggestion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Bug free version on top of stable build 13, the batch for the town is made by me, and I shall fine tune it during this week. What I DO want is al the new quests in it and you can leave the usa out. It is not yet finished so no, thankyou. Nonetheless, good work Pieter!

Bug free? Fat chance!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I need to find out what version to use then though. I've been having so much weirdness in the past few days, that I'm pretty sure the most recent versions aren't really an option. Short Jack Gold's game version might indeed be a good base to work from. It is stable and does contain the Selectable Storylines mod, so it's fairly up-to-date. Then I can apply my own updates to that, but leave out any risky changes. So please do upload your game version if you can, Short Jack Gold!

Were you planning on uploading your whole game folder though? 6 GB realy IS huge! Could you upload your PROGRAM and RESOURCE\INI folder first and I'll add my changes to that so that you can add that to your own game version before uploading the whole thing? It'd be great if Thomas the Terror's and a simple virtual sailor's work on the towns could be included, as well as the move of the AoPtowns into "normal" folders.
