I love those Colophon sites like the one Commander William Wallace found on Grace O'Malley, and this one touches upon a subject near and dear to my heart; Swordplay!

Riposte, if you are so inclined, but don't ballestre this topic, because I'm on guard and I'll get piste! I'll stop thrust for now.

What a fun book and a fun movie... Sir Christopher (or all), did you read the 25th anniversary version of it?

<a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/promo/princessbride/description.html" target="_blank">http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/promo/pr...escription.html</a>

This morning whilst idling over breakfast I was watching the movie "The Three Musketeers" with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Chris O'Donnell. Tim Curry played such a deliciously evil Cardinal Richelieu, and the lovely Rebecca DeMornay played Countess DeWinter... Nice bit of fun, loads of swordplay, but not quite as fun as Princess Bride - that movie has never, IMHO, been topped for excellent swordplay... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

<i>Inigo: You're sure nobody's following us?

Vizzini: As I told you, it would be absolutely, totally, and in all other ways, inconceivable. No one in Guilder knows what we've done. And no one in Florin could have gotten here so fast. Out of curiosity, why do you ask?

Inigo: No reason. It's only, I just happened to look behind us, and something is there. </i>

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I should `re-read` Princess Bride, as well. I'll have to purchase a new copy, however - me old one was given to me by a former acquaintance years ago, and what she wrote on the inside cover is not something my wife would appreciate! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Hello my name is Eniago Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die..

That has got to be one of the best movies ever produced (next to the Sea Hawks with Erroyl Flynn and PotC of course)

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Sir Christopher (or all), did you read the 25th anniversary version of it?  <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I still have my copy from the original publishing date. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

I think I read "Buttercup's Baby" within "The Silent Gondoliers", not the greatest read out there, but I never got the 25th anniversary edition. I'm waiting for the 50th anniversary edition.

Here's another link showing some research that people have done on the various schools of defense in the 16th and 17th Century:

I'm going to go back and work on my "Universal Parry".

New material? Hopefully not just about Guilder and Florin... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

This is from the info at the link above:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->THE PRINCESS BRIDE
The 25th Anniversary Edition
S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure

With a new introduction by William Goldman and the first chapter of Buttercup's Baby, the `long-lost` sequel to The Princess Bride!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->It's an interesting read... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Not sure if this is on topic - but I have learned to use a sword. Moslty self taught but i've adapted some martial arts techniques to the sword type. Its a 'bastard' sword(hand and a half) and while not a fencing weapon, nor one that a pirate would use being too long, it was interesting learning to use it.

I've never sparred live with it - that would be too dangerous, but sparring with `re-enactment` groups that use wooden+latex weapons gave me some useful insights into `hand-to`-combat medieval style, and plenty of bumps and bruises too <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

needles to say any good viking worth his salt needs a sword in his/her hand when they die <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

I've thought of taking up fencing(thanks for the link) - but somehow the lighter blades feel too flimsy to me, i think if i had been around in the pirate era i would have liked a heavier blade.

Child of Thor,

I second Mad Jack's recommendation, fencing is a blast, and if you like the heavier swords you might really enjoy saber!

Don't knock the flimsey blades too much, in duels the combatants often preferred using sabers over rapiers or epees, because the chance of survivng the duel was better for both combatants with cutting edge weapons over the pointy ones.

The best thing about fencing is that, with good equipment, you get close to the experience of actual swordfighting, but no one gets hurt.
(This keeps the supply of sparring partners healthy.)

(Don't worry about being on topic, you're actually on the one I started the thread with, but my personal tendency towards digression is well known... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />: )

Good point, Sir Chris! (pardon the pun!) I excelled in saber. In fact, I have embarassed a number of "swordsmen" at Renaissance festivals in "all comers welcome" meleés. The last was two years ago, and I was nursing a reconstructed knee! I had my opponent's saber out of his hand, and had him on his back crying "Enough!" I got a free turkey leg out of the whole thing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> That's Minnesota for you...
