<!--QuoteBegin-Mad_Jack+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Mad_Jack)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Good point, Sir Chris! (pardon the pun!) I excelled in saber. In fact, I have embarassed a number of "swordsmen" at Renaissance festivals in "all comers welcome" meleés. The last was two years ago, and I was nursing a reconstructed knee! I had my opponent's saber out of his hand, and had him on his back crying "Enough!" I got a free turkey leg out of the whole thing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> That's Minnesota for you...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

saber sounds interesting...............i'll see if i have any fencing classes where i am, would be nice to add it to my other martial skills.

@SirChristopherMings,

its true that a piercing blow causes more severe damage, internals dont like cold steel for sure. And with a bigger sword like my one, you wouldn't want to pierce unless you didnt mind the risk of getting your blade stuck in bone.

I found that the kind of strikes and parries that came most naturaly were ones that used the momentum and weight of the blade - so you would do a lot of circular sweeps of varying heights, trying to keep the flow so a parry would lead to an attack etc. I would imagine these kinds of blows would have been mostly to cripple - arms and legs being likely targets. The head would most likely be fatal - still its a risky move as you leave yourself open to a counter.

Sword fighting rocks(as does archery which i also do), and its good to know there are a some here who have tried it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />:

They were probably epee fencers! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Mad Jack there's a fencing coach of mine that lives for those moments! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I'm more of a foil guy, myself, but nothing beats the speed and beauty of a saber match! Did you see the girl's American saber team got two medals at the Olympics?

Child of Thor, definitely check out a class that provides equipment before you invest any money in fencing. In all likelihood you will get addicted and then you can buy some equipment. This, and your class, then enables you to "show up" at classes (like I do, not having to pay for the class. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ) because the instructors usually like unknown blades to show up so the fencers in the class don't just fence each other. They have to face an unknown blade which is good practice for them. ( and fun for me!)

I don't know about the severity of the damage, but a few inches of blade piercing a lung makes a person just as dead as hacking them apart. There's the movie, "The Duelists" where two French Napoleonic officers fight a series of duels with each other through the course of their careers. When they get into a protracted saber duel both of the duelists are exhausted and have to be pulled apart when they start wrestling with each other. In the epee match up it's over in thirty seconds, and one of them is nearly killed immediately. (I love that movie, but my friend the fencing coach tends to sneer at it a bit.)

The thing, to me, with the heavy swords and longswords is that they were designed primarily for knights on horseback, and from what I understand a lot of the European schools of fencing (as opposed to the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) came out of the experience of the guys who didn't have horses and armor, but still managed to survive the battles. Also, I think that movie, "Rob Roy", with Liam Neeson and Tim Roth, did a pretty good job of illustrating the various outcomes of a match between a heavy cutting sword and a rapier.

I'll tell you this, all that practicing with a heavy blade is going to serve you extremely well when you get ahold of a saber, you will fell like you are fighting with a feather. I practice doing parries with ten pound weights, and very slowly, that only makes me appreciate my little foil all the more after a couple of bouts. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I'm rambling now, but if you like archery then you are really in luck because Mad Jack does archery too! He found this game and posted it in the Burning Brig, and I'll admit that I am addicted. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />:

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Yes, that game is fun!

I fenced when I was in school, and am a toxophilite too... My sis and `bro-in`-law were bowhunters and competed for medals and trophies in their sports club. I just did a lot of target practice, but I really love it. When I was in college I used to get up an hour before breakfast and go out and shoot.

I still have my mask, several foils, gloves, jacket, and fencing shoes from school and from when I was taking lessons from a guy who was on the Olympic mens fencing team in 1928 and 1932, and who actually taught people like Basil Rathbone and Errol Flynn how to stage fence...

He was OOOOOOLLLLLDER than GAWD when I met him, but he could still work you up into a sweat. He was so darned QUICK! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I have a CAS Iberia fencing rapier that I use for my pirate costume at the Renaissance Faire - it has a Schlaeger blade.

<a href="http://www.silvermane.com/Fencing%20Rapier.html" target="_blank">http://www.silvermane.com/Fencing%20Rapier.html</a>

Bit pricey there, I didn't pay that much for mine. But a nice pic. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

wow! its weird how many of us persue interests in what can be considered dying arts <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> - maybe it has a link to why we are all here?

Thats a very beautiful looking sword Cat(do you mind? - you can all call me coT or variations of, its easier.) - i'm sure there is one like it in PotC(the game) as well!

My sword is made by Wilkinson swords and is a little like this one <a href="http://www.`wilkinson-swords`.co.uk/medieval/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.`wilkinson-swords`.co.u...eval/index.html</a>

Still the one i've got doesn't appear to be on their website anymore - i inherited it from my mother, and she had it made over 12 years ago. It might be a little longer than the model above, but it cost about £200 more!!
I love the way you can see the forgeing in the blade when you angel it in the light - its the way you can tell a proper forged blade from a simple cast one, the blows of the hammer leave small indented patterns that ripple under close scrutiny.
When i left school i wanted to be a blacksmith, but sadly all my local smiths were not taking any apprentices <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thanks for the info on the fencing guys - you've kindled my interest <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />:

I guess next i need to find some way to learn to shoot a musket+pistol for my skills to be complete - then with PatXX's boat rebuild we can all ply the sea's lookin for plunder <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

As for archery i use a very short recurve bow, it was a steal at only £50(many years ago!), that is based on the design used by the mongol horse archers. Its very handy for running through woods as its so short! Its a 60lb bow and wood/fibreglass composite. ah i found it here <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
<a href="http://www.btwebworld.com/quicks/" target="_blank">http://www.btwebworld.com/quicks/</a> - under "Bows Recurve 'Classic Hunter' ".

Its been a while since i used it, both it and the sword are in the keeping of a good friend - he teaches `kung-fu` and has more use of them than me at the momment.

Love the sword, CoT (yes, no problem!) (HA!)... I love going to the RenFaire and seeing the foundries that make their own - sweet. Wish I could afford some of their work, it is excellent. I am always drooling over some knife or another that they have.

The two boot knives I carry for my pirate garb - one is a replica of a `Sykes-Fairbairn` commando knife:

<a href="http://www.1sks.com/images/lewis/`lew-71490`.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.1sks.com/images/lewis/`lew-71490`.jpg</a>

and the other has a bone handle and a similar blade to the commando knife, but made in Mexico I am guessing back in the '70's. They are nice, but not as nice as some of those smith's blades... I'd really like a little one, a fine little belt knife something like this:

<a href="http://www.lyttleknives.com/grdshout.htm" target="_blank">http://www.lyttleknives.com/grdshout.htm</a>

Maybe one day. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And then there's this handsome burly blacksmith that I also manage to visit every time I am there... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Back on topic of swordfighting, here's a cool link I think you will all enjoy:

I've been thinking of getting in with these guys...

I've long been of the mind that doing Sir Francis Drake's route in reverse would have an element of surprise that no one would ever be expecting. We could all wind up in the Carribean, take over Tortuga, establish our own country, then spend a lot of time drinking rum. Let me know when we can get underway!

What a neat group Lady Cat! I wonder if they use those geometrical floor patterns that you see in the old drawings as part of their training. I'll have to read more about them.

ive been thinking about taking up fencing, ive always loved swords,
i own a fencing sword, i remeber what its called i just cant <i>remeber</i> what its called, its the long pointy one. i feel retarded i just cant think of its name <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />: well i own that and a old persian sabre, the seath and handle are only around 75 yrs old or so but the blade is hundreds of years old. the closet ive come to fencing is the sword fights i had with my friends, dont get me wrong these werent the powerranger little kid sword fights that come to mind, we made swords outa pvc piping and some foam to soften it up a lil bit, dont want it to hurt to much <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />
we made all sorts of things, when we faught i was most comfertable with the really large sword we had made, im a big guy and i could use my power to really use it well, we had all sorts of weapons, 2 of us used 2 really short swords, or just use a medium one, one preferd a sword with a shield, and one even made himself a pike <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> , well we'd have duels and small battles and it was loads of fun.id love to learn fencing one day, and to enlarge my sword collection.
this was just me barging in on ur little topic, im done now <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

I have most of the equipment to fence (the clothes, vest, and mask) I just haven't figured out what sword type to specialize in so I haven't bought one yet. I think saber or epee. Any suggestions or comments on what you've enjoyed the most?

Now, Spaz, dem swords made o' PVC pipe be a fine idear thar, matey! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Mo' Fred Bob's speed compared to dem sharp pointy type! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

A lot of the reenactment (like SCA) and LARP people use padded weapons like that (as well as live steel) for demonstrations, practice, and fun.

Spaz,
My first sword was the tube from the Christmas wrap. My younger brother perfected the "Throw a bunch of poker chips at your opponent" manuver that we still use today. (We're all at least in our forties.) It sounds like you may have an epee, but it could be a foil. Is ithe blade springy or stiff?

DeCuervo, Saber is a lot of fun, but I favor the foil, myself, trying to gain a balance between the speed and control, I practiced a long time with the standard "French" Foil grip, until I felt I was ready for a "pistol grip". Epee never really appealed to me, maybe I'll have to give it another try.

ya the christmas wraping tubes were awesome swords, and made good `nun-chucks` too <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> besides the pvc pide me and my other friend would use baseball bats (plastic and nerf) brooms and other stuff to have gladiator fights at my old house, we even had a metal trash can lid that was the perfect shield. good times <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

anyways the blade is stiff ya.

ok i found this fencing club which seems to be the best in my area <a href="http://www.londonthamesfencingclub.com/AbouttheClub.htm" target="_blank">http://www.londonthamesfencingclub.com/Abo...bouttheClub.htm</a>

Its not cheap - but its got a long tradition behind it, which must count for something?

What do the swordspersons ( <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ) here think of it? does it sound like a good school? They do Sabre at all levels which sounds fine to me? Still i'm a complete newbie to the world of fencing.

If i'm going to have a go i dont want to mess around. I had to rule out a club just down the road from where i live because its website kept mentioning about going down the local for a pint(probably to seem friendly), i've tried swordplay+beer before - not a good mix!

It looks awfully expensive to me, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> , even the one night ticket for a lesson, and that only sabre! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

No foil? :x That sounds a bit prejudiced to me as well! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I hate the idea of investing a large sum when you're first starting out. Not everybody likes fencing after they've tried it. Many's the time I've seen students leave a class in disgust because usually the first few weeks are devoted to learning the footwork, and they are all geared up to start swinging a blade.

I found this link, which may provide you with a possible lead to finding a person who can point you towards a place where you can get started and not have to go broke.

<a href="http://www.saxonfc.fsnet.co.uk/links.htm" target="_blank">http://www.saxonfc.fsnet.co.uk/links.htm</a>

Its been my experience as well that fencers will go out of their way to help people get started, because it only creates more bouting partners for them. It might even be worth it to talk with someone at this pricey club to see if they can recommend a good place.

My own view is that it is better to start with foil and then learn sabre, because foil gives you a good grounding that can be applied, and elaborated upon , when you decide to take up other blades. I have never given epee a serious try, however, I have a hard time taking a game seriously where if someone scores a touch on your toe, it counts as much as your hitting them in the heart. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

Yeah, alcohol and swordplay don't mix, if you drink - don't sabre. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> But on the other hand, it's often been that a group will go out after class, most of my classes have been in the morning, for coffee, and I, for one, could usually go for a Guinness after a bout, just for the strength, mind you! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I'm with Sir Christopher - that club looks pretty nice but rather pricey.

And I'll also echo Sir Christopher's suggestion about foil first and then "graduate" to a different blade when you feel comfortable with it.

Unless you fall in love with the foil, then stay an undergraduate. I'll never forget the first day of a sabre class I took, it was like, "remember all that hard stuff you put so much work into?
