Can't Install the Game!

happyhannah

Landlubber
I've just bought this game and tried to install it. About halfway through the installation I get the message "Please insert disk 2" which I expected.... but when I insert the second disk I get an error message: "File "Setup-2a.bin" not found in "F:\". Please insert the correct CD or specify a different folder."

Well, I've searched through the whole CD and this "Setup-2a.bin" doesn't exist :-( If it's in the CAB folder, how do I open it?

My computer is up to date enough to run it, I have the right DirectX and my CD drive works... The game is the UbiSoft version... that's all I can think of, if you need more info let me know!

I was really excited about getting this game and now I can't play it :-(

Please help!

Hey man,

Well I'll not be of much help couz I didnt have that problem. I checked my CDs to find this Setup-2a.bin file but nothing. I dont really know what it is. Is it an original copy or a hacked one? If its a hacked one speak with the man who got the original, if its an original speak with Bethesda Softworks or Akella. I'm just warning you this game has a lot of problems I cant play it either but I'm trying very very hard.
Sorry i cant help more. Hope you have better luck than me.

P.S. I waited like 2 week to get it after I ordered it and then there was a problem with the port office and when I finally got it, it wouldnt play GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

This is the fully legit. version of the game, but it's the UbiSoft (European) version... not sure if this makes a difference. I looked on the Bethesda site and they basically said that the UbiSoft version is not their problem, I need to e-mail UbiSoft themselves.......... so I did, and have heard nothing since! Grrr.

I have found that I can sort-of play the game if I go into the Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Pirates folder (I have played Morrowind for years so I'm familiar with the Bethesda folder!) and click on the "Engine" icon... but all of the graphics look weird and the "Activate" key doesn't work. Also, I can't change the allocation of controls in the Options menu. Hmmmm.

I ordered it off Play.com two days ago, I'm really impressed with their delivery! The game only cost £7 and the delivery was free! I always buy stuff from them :)

And try this download this mod, intall it and then go to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Pirates of the Caribbean\tools and open the PotCModHelper find the location of your PotC and then klick on the icon PLAY, play for like 10mins and quit the game now check the reports of PotCModHelper and send me ur report. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

I'm going to get this mod now... erm, where do I find it?

Until then, here are my system details. I think it <i>should</i> run it...
Operating System: XP
CPU: Pentium 4, 3.06 GHz
HD: lots (erm, don't know exactly, about 150GB)
RAM: 512MB (I need more RAM! I'm getting Oblivion when it comes out, my PC's gonna <i>die...</i>)
CD-ROM speed: 52x
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 6200 (This may be my downfall too... I'm getting a new one before March)

I'll go search for the mod now :)

Hello Happyhannah,

I use the European UbiSoft version with no troubles. I don't really know why the game won't install properly for you. Beats me why it's asking for a file that doesn't exist. I had a look at my CDs and the file really doesn't exist. If the screen comes up asking for "Setup-2a.bin", can you browse for the file? Then you should point the installer to "data3.cab" instead of "Setup-2a.bin". Would that work?

It seems like something weird is going on with the installation process, but not with the game itself. If the worst comes to happen that you can't possibly get it installed using your own CDs, I might be able to send the missing files to you, so you can finish the installation that way. Then, once you got the stock game finally working properly, I would recommend zipping up the entire game's folder, so that when you have to install the game again, you won't need to use the CDs anymore.

In the file-browsing window, data3.CAB isn't selectable as a folder :-( I'll have another go.

Oh, and I took a screenshot of what I'm getting in-game at the moment. It's not pretty :-(

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Happyhannah/nasty.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm plagued by big white squares everywhere... I guess this has something to do with it not installing right?

It's got to do with textures missing. But I haven't got the slightest idea why it isn't installing properly. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Okay, I'm desperate to get this fixed! I want to play the game, dammit :-(

If it's any help, here are the exact error messages I'm getting. (note: disk 1 is in drive f and disk 2 is in drive G. I've tried swpping/using only one drive... no difference)

Halfway through installation:
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Happyhannah/nextdisk.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Then, no matter what I click:
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Happyhannah/notfound.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Setup-2a.bin <i>doesn't exist</i> :-(

That is CRAZY! Setup-2a.bin indeed doesn't exist. And it doesn't need to exist either, because it's not used. It should search for "data3.cab"!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
Do you have any other computer on which you could try installing it? I would be interested to know if it also asks for that same file on another computer. If it does, something is messed up with the CD. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I do indeed.... *goes to install on laptop*

...my laptop doesn't have a graphics card, as such... this could be interesting.

Woo!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I emailed the Bethesda tech support and they told me to email the UbiSoft tech support, who told me to email Focus, who replied in about an hour with this:

<i>We re-wrote the installation for this title. Some copies contain the
new build of disc 1 but the old build of disc 2. Please tell me what
your postal address is and i'll supply you with a copy of the new build
of disc 2.
</i>

:) :) :) :)

So it wasn't me being stupid after all! You'd think that they'd make sure the shops had the right version, wouldn't you? Oh well, I'm not complaining! Woo! *does happy dance*

Thanks for all your help, everyone! No doubt I'll be back soon...

That is great news, Happyhannah! I bet you'll truly be HAPPYhannah now! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Quite strange that they would ever pack two discs of two different versions of the game together though! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
