I may have missed something, but is there some guide to making completely new character models that will still animate correctly (not editing existing model retaining the number of vertices)? I would like to try sometimes to make a properly uniformed officer, more detailed than what the game offers at the moment.

I'm not sure about how to add new character models. Your best chance is probably to make the model and rig it to the appropriate skeleton provided in these help files:
    http://www.piratesahoy.net/cloud/repository/Tools/Help/Animation.rar

Then, you can export it to GM format using the animation settings, but I've never done this myself, so can't really help you beyond that.

We use the same skeleton for NHR as well, so whatever you do is transferrable in any case.

    Thanks!

Well, as usual, I will see what I can do there :)
