collision detection

Collision detection in my install has become borked. Boardings are very difficult because when you approach the other ship you collide and both start spinning and crashing into each other. When the spinning finally stops you get to try it again. It seems the only safe way to board is to use the long distance boarding perk.
Also, when leaving port ships get sucked together and go racing off while stuck together while getting significant damage.
Then there are the big Spanish War and Manila galleons. They will start going around in circles and any smaller ships close by can be sunk by repeated collisions.
It seems all ships are affected by this to some degree large and small. I have seen a yacht get sucked into the side of a passing 1st rate when it seemed there was more than enough room to pass safely.

Does this only seem to happen when stock ships are involved? I mean, have you seen any custom ships colliding weirdly with each other?
Some of the stock ships probably need to be put through Maya to fix any wobbly collision detection. I seem to recall the stock Galleon and Manowar being the worst culprits.

I only sail merchantmen so it is mainly POTC and AOP ships that I know are doing it. The Spanish Galleons are the worst and I avoid them when possible.
Today while leaving Tortuga I watched my Dutch Pinnace and my Postillionen escort collide, get stuck together, and charge off at a very fast speed while suffering great damage until they finally broke apart. I was sailing away in the Carrack.
A few days ago I got caught up in a dance where 3 Heavy East Indiamen were spinning like tops crashing into each other. One was a surrendered ship that had been just sitting there, the other was trying to evade my boarding attempt, and then there was mine.
Last year I saw this happening with the Victory too. In fact during a battle at Cozumel the Sovereign of the Sea and my Battleship started colliding and my ship was nearly sunk before we could separate. It is almost like it is a global condition and is bad enough to warrant a comment.

EDIT: Here is a screenie I took some time ago. It shows the Victory entering the Martinique harbor. In the lower right hand corner is a brig that has already collided and lost its bowsprit and is sailing away. The yacht or bark was sailing out following the brig and has just collided with the 1st rate and is being sucked in. It barely misses losing its bowsprit too.

That's really strange, then. I can't see what could suddenly affect so many ships like this. You say this has happened before?

As Pieter said, does this issue persist when starting a new game?

Dunno. It will take a while to test in a new game on this install. I do not use the console.

What if you use the cheatmode just to give you more money? That should do no harm.

I know weird spinning can happen when you use 30x time compression; seen that many times before.

Hey, new avatar! You don't look like a skinny kid anymore and have filled out well. :onya

Started a new game as that French fellow in 1664. After dying several times I got practical and shot him as he ran up and then ran him through. That got me off the beach where I discovered that that was the whole story. It's free play from there. :flower
The starter ship is some fantasy brig, so I got rid of it ASAP and am now sailing the very nice light fluyt. I guess it's time to start crashing into other ships to see what happens. Oh, everything I mentioned before happens in straight time.

The screenie of the 1st rate is around 9 months old, or whenever it was that I was working on them.

While approaching Philipsburg I saw a barque longue and a brigantine sandwiched between a Manila galleon and a fast war galleon. The small ships rattled around for a bit before the barque longue was sunk. Then the brigantine squirted out sideways at an easy 60 knots for maybe 300 yards before stopping. This is the new norm.

LOL! I figured it was about time to drop that 2007 picture. And if you're wondering... that's the Antarctic mainland in the background! :cheeky

It appears that it is the older ships that have the most problems with collisions. So far it is:

Spanish Galleons, Manila and War
NL_Pinnace
light fluyt of war
heavy east indiaman
NL_Amsterdam

My current fleet of English Galleon, Fast Galleon, and Treasure Galleon are all doing fine.

Hmm. The NL_Pinnace and Heavy East Indiaman have already been put through Maya for various reasons, yet they still have problems. That's not terribly promising. :facepalm
I certainly remember the Spanish Galleons being reported for having a bad bow wave some time ago, so it's no surprise that they need fixing.

The Spanish Galleons reach out so far they are capable of sinking a smaller ship just entering port, like the 1st rates. The others have to be pretty close before they start banging around.
Like when they are following you too close together and beat each other up sometimes respawning kilometers away.
Or in a swirling 15 ship battle suddenly several ships will go crazy making boardings impossible.
Or sometimes they just get glued together and go racing off doing tremendous damage to each other until they finally break free. This screenie shows the Postillionen and my Fluyt stuck together. We were not racing off, but we could not pull apart for quite a while.
