Debugger detected?

White Wolf

Landlubber
I've just downloaded the Build 12 mod and installed it. Installed fine, but upon starting the game, one of two things happens:

1) The game stops at a black screen before it even gets to the first title screen and just beeps at me, or;

2) The game does the same as above, except there is also a small `pop-up` box saying that a debugger has been detected. As soon as I click on 'OK', the game exits. The only debugger I even had installed (but not running) was Cheat Engine 4.4. Uninstalling this did not solve the problem, and I even went through and deleted every reference to Cheat Engine in both files and registry entries.

System specs:

Windows XP & SP2 (fully updated via Windows Update)
Athlon XP 3000+
1GB DDR RAM
Radeon 9600 (Omega 2.5.97 drivers)
Audigy 2 soundcard (latest drivers as of today)
Chaintech Zenith `CT-7NJS` mobo (with Nvidia's 5.10 drivers)

Anybody any ideas what's causing this?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> This is a SWAG (scientific `wild-assed` guess) but maybe WinSP2? Never heard of that "debugger" thing before, that's really odd...

Try this...

Open up your game directory and go to PotCPROGRAM and find the file <span style='color:red'>BuildSettings.h</span>

Open it in any text editor like Notepad.

Scroll all the way down and find the lines:

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->//**********DEBUG***********

//DO NOT CHANGE THESE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

//Note if you are not starting a new game you will have to change these values in the console.

int DEBUG =        0;      //debug mode

int DEBUGINFO =    0;      //log debug info

int TRACELOG =        0;      //run extra trace() commands

int TRACEALLLOGS =    0;      //trace() every Log() call<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

Change the <span style='color:red'>int DEBUG = 0; //debug mode</span> value from "0" to "1", and try starting the game again.

Not sure this will help, but I'm hoping it does! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Thanks for the reply, but, nope, didn't work. It seems to be something actually up with PoTC, not just Build 12 as when I totally uninstalled and reinstalled it, I got the same error with just PoTC.

I'll have a look around the net and see if anything strikes a chord.

Try changing the resolution in the configure thingy
Update your directX and grafics drivers
Myself I've had that problem

Nope, wasn't that. I've solved the problem. You see, according to PoTC, Nero is a 'debugger'. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

However, I've run slap bang into another problem - the same one as CGS in this thread - <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic3924.php" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic3924.php</a>

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>soxx, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> You don't have any modifications to PotC and you are getting a debugger error? That sounds like what happened to White Wolf - there is something in your system that might be considered a "debugger"?

Try making sure that there is NOTHING running other than your OS (Windows) when you try installing PotC. That may do the trick!

HTH! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Again, welcome aboard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I reinstalled the game the other day after about a year and hit this problem too. So it is Nero giving the error? Did you just uninstall Nero to clear it?

I take it uninstalling Nero wont have any ill effects? I have Nero installed and have the same problem, never could get past that pop up box.

I once installed Nero intentionally for writign to CD. I had removed it before I originally installed PotC and it all was fine then. I think I must have installed it as apart of a package for my DVD write at some time before reinstalling PotC. Removing it shouldn't cause a problem provide a) you are not needing to do any writing to your device or b) you have an alternative piedce of software.

I'll see if I can uninstall it tonite and will report here if that makes a difference. <fingers crossed>

Im not sure if i have anyway of reinstalling Nero if i were to need it at some point. Nero was on my PC when i got it so i guess it might be on a disk that came with the PC or something.

Well if you decide to go this route I can tell you that uninstalling it made PotC work for me. Didn't even need a reboot.

Good luck
