Hey all!

I downloaded the latest build 12 modpack and update. I had used the mod before but my hardrive got wiped <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
so i had to reinstall.
Whenever I try to run the game, however, the following error comes up right after it says Intializing Complete.

Runtime error!

Program: ...s\Bethesda Softworks\Pirates of the Caribbean\ENGINE.exe


abnormal program termination


This was installed on a clean version of POTC. The funny thing was that the same problem occured when i tried to use updates from Pieter's site, except this time it occured with the original modpack first, then i tried installing the update, but it still did it.
It's a great game and a great mod, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I know next to nothing about coding and all that, so please explain in detail. Thanks again!
 
How did you install it? The proper way of installing is:
1) Install PotC (make sure it works)
2) Install Build 12 (make sure it works)
3) Extract the Post Build 12 mods (make sure it works)
4) Install the new islands (if you want those too)
5) Install the update (if you don't use the new islands) or the new islands code (if you do use the new islands.)

For all I know, that should work... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I've got the same problem.
I can't start PotC anymore. I also can't start a clean installation of PotC. It breaks up without any error messages. So I avtivated errorlog in the engine.ini.
But all I got is the following system.log file.

This message is everything I got in the system.log file. And it doesn't matter if I had installed a clean PotC Version or the MOD installation. The message is still the same. No other error messages, no nothing. The game only don't start anymore.

First I've been thinking it depends on DirectX or the NVidia graphic driver so I uninstall DirectX and the NVidia driver and install a lower version of both programs which worked before.
But it don't worked so I bring them back to actual status.
 
To Jack Black: When I first installed the game, it refused to work as well. What I did to get it to work again is create a new user on the computer and I was able to play through that user. Gosh, that's sounds really crazy but I've trying it anyway but it doesn't work. And with the new user I got an error message with abnormal program termination. It seems that the engine.exe cause some trouble.
So I have to go back and have a look at the last program installations I've made.
And one of the last updates where the DirectX 9c December update and the NVidia Forceware driver Vers. 81.98
I had to restore my system just before that installations.
After that I've installed the NVidia Forceware driver and it is still working.
So I had installed DirectX 9c and it work fine.
Then I install the DirectX update again and now PotC don't work any more. It seems that DirectX update causes the trouble on my system.
So I had to restore my system again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
The good news is that I got PotC back to work properly with that step. The bad news is that I wrecked completly my registry with this step and aproximatly 15 other programs don't work any more properly.

In that case something went wrong in installing. What did you install? Plain PotC? Build 12? Post Build 12 mods? You are not the only one to report a runtime error on the latest modpack update. The errors concerning the nations I have seen myself as well. It didn't crash the game though. These were caused by some bugs in a file, but I already have a fix from pirate_kk now, so those bugs will be fixed in the next update.

I don't know what is wrong with AIShip.c and ships.c though. I don't recall anything being changed in those files. Maybe the bugs were in there for a long time and surface only under certain conditions. E.g. only if some divider in some formula exceptionally happens to be zero (zero food, zero ammo) Saw such reports often, usually the game tolerates them but maybe a huge amount crashes it. I copied that errorlog and I'll try to fix it, but I have once again already more on my plate than i can swallow <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
 
Don't worry, CCC. Swallow what you can swallow and leave the rest for the time being. I have seen the nation relation bugs in another forum thread as well and there these were the cause for the crash. It's strange because it didn't crash my game, even though I did see those error reports. With a bit of luck, it will be fixed once pirate_kk's fix for it has been added into the modpack. I will do that Saturday, so please put up with this a little longer.

I decided to make the patch available a few days earlier. I attached it to <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=5586&view=findpost&p=137457" target="_blank">this</a> forum post. Please install that on top of your PotC installation. I hope that fixes those crashes.

You guys are just amazing . This little fix work great. I can start PotC again with all Post Build Updates and there apears no error message anymore. No error.log is created.
So I can start again testing (or much more playing <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> ) PotC.
