Game too fast

banku

Landlubber
ok, so i have a dual core pc, wich in some cases makes the program run too fast. To do anything i need to open the task manager and change the affinity. The problem is that when i minisize the game it will crash when i try to resize it again. If anyone know how to make the pc remember the affinity for some programs or has an idea how to stop the game from crashing, i would be very greatful.

you need to run the game in window mode.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

No you don't have to play the game into window mode. You just have to use the program setaffinity to set the affinity in the pprogram to the first core. I just did it myself and the game now works very well. You can get the program in the topic below.

<a href="http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=65211&st=0&p=587064&#entry587064" target="_blank">http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry587064</a>

Has this actually happened to you guenthar? I will try this program but somehow it sounds very strange to me that this would be the solution. As far as I can tell, the problem has more to do with going back to the game after you have had a crash. Restarting the PC cancels out the problem entirely.

It started happening for me from the time I started playing the game and this isn't the only game that has had problems with my dual core processor. I was having problems with NWN and when they came out with the newest patch I found out it is my dual core processor that was causing the problems.

I also had to do that with POTC when I decided to go and play it again yesterday.

Proccess Explorer has a option to turn off the second core(not run it off POWER DOWN <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> jsut tell the proccess to use only one core).

I use a program called "WinLauncherXP". It allows you to setup different programs to use different cores, or all, and also app priorities, and other command line stuff. Very handy for the Dual Core gamer.

Another thing I wanted to mention is... I 'began' to notice "too fast" gameplay when I had updated to nVidia drivers "91.31_forceware_winxp2kmce_english_whql.exe". I had to revert back down to 84.21 to get my games to stop bursting into what felt like someone hitting the FastFwd button while in the middle of playing.

There are newer drivers out now (91.47), but I am reluctant to try them yet, as there has been no mention from nvidia about confirming, or fixing the random-speedup issues of 91.31.

Most of my game swill run smoother (less jitters) when I set affinity to Core0. Some games, show no change, and as such I don't bother using winlauncher with them. Its a hit or miss, and it seems older games (1+ years) most always need affinity set for them.

Anyhow, just information. I don't actually own or have played the game this topic was in relation too. But having played Pirates of the Caribbean, and seeing this behavior AFTER I upgraded to 91.31 drivers, I just wanted to share the information.

I'm using NGO equivilant to Nvidia 91.47 tweaked driver, its only 18Mb versus fullversion 61MB,and actualy get better game performance ,stabilityand grahics with POTC and SH3,anybody else tried this driver. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Last NGO I had tried was 18456. It had issues, so I had gone back to whql certified. However, with recent driver issues, I dont even think whql means squat !!! lol.

I maye give the NGO ones a try again.

194125 ?

Nothing like that listed: <a href="http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=10" target="_blank">http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&a...p;dwn_cat_id=10</a>

And I know what you mean about being picky... my HomeBrew gaming machine is a tight ship too! I'm always leary of new updates and installs... heh.

Well... I tried "nvodngov19145.exe". POTC runs like snot... the interface graphics flicker and jitter... and the whole game feels utterly sluggish, with much bad tearing while panning.

Really odd. The inverse was with nvidias drivers, where everything was going in hyperactive mode.

Man... these 91x drivers of late, really suck balls. What the hell does nvidia think they are doing??

Here is an interesting twist of events...

After trying the 91.31 (UGH HORRIBLE!), then the 91.47 (AGH!) and the NGO 91.45 (yeah yeah)... and having the worst gameplay imaginable in POTC... I just today downloaded the most uber fresh and new BETA 92.91 drivers.

You want ot know what? POTC never ran so much smoother EVER! Its smooth. No interface flashing, no jerkiness, no hiccups... its smooth!

The drivers I downloaded:
<a href="ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/92.91/92.91_forceware_winxp2k_english_beta.exe" target="_blank">ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/92.91/9...nglish_beta.exe</a>

I mention this here, as POTC is sort of the grounds for AOP... they sort of work the same, sorta. Anyhow...

Isnt that something ?

I also tried out Titans Quest, Dungeon Siege II, Tomb Raider Legend demo, and Lego star wars etc. All games are running quite nice with these drivers.

Great ye found a decent driver,NGO works really well for me PC,what video card are ye running, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

eVGA 7900GT CO

Its decent. On a DFI board, 2gb ddr500 ram, SATA raid... opty dual core overclocked to 2.8ghz.

Seems lately the drivers issue is 'ymmv'... some people get good results with some that others find working horribly. And vice versa. Really crazy!

You can learn more about the dual core problem on AMD's support forum. Basically my limited understanding is that the 2 cores can get out of sync when the processor changes speeds. If a game uses a certain timing method then it will be affected by this "fast forwarding" effect. It's not a game bug, it's a processor bug.

To fix mine, I turned off Cool and Quiet in bios, and set my power profile in windows to "always on". This prevents things from changing the processor speed. I've been using this fix for over a year now and haven't had any problems with this issue (and I don't use any affinity settings). I've seen other sollutions posted on the AMD forum but these changes did the trick for me.
