Solved Game Won't start!

CaptainSteiner

Landlubber
When I try to run ENGINE.exe, it says:

Runtime error!
program c:\Games\ENGINE.exe

abnormal program termination

Then when I try and run the config.exe, it brings an error saying:

engine.ini or options file missed.

Somebody help me ASAP. I downloaded the new Build 14 FULL (That's all I downloaded) and didn't install it to my Programs Files. I have Windows 7 32 bit, with ATI graphics card, Radeon HD 5570. Any more questions, please ask me.

from the looks of it has he installed it onto the C-drive, where Windows should be running on its own, right? What were the other possible reasons? too early this mornin'. Thingy, Nero might be the culprit.

Wait for them specialists.

Get the latest drivers, the game onto the next partition, start a stock game for a test -you have allowed the batch file to check the completeness?- defragmentise someone said and adjust the video-panel. There should be a "Cossack"-engine and another person with the same card got it then afloat.

Ey Hylie, what is this with those Intel issues, what has ATI got do to with all that? you have mentioned it on a few occasions and i have just read about every thread. Plus went to see AMD/ATI's website, sure enough can you not find a word about it, at least what Intel is concerned, on that HD 5570 to be more precise. Is a bandwidth of >50GB/s much?!! What we would like to know though is if you got the 14er Beta-2 a-galloping now, na? in relation to this other fresh topic, the installation goes absolutely smoothly with no problems whatsoever, all thirteen times. ...all we eg understand is that some notebooks need a special software what then slackens the speed, right? genuinely, don't know what some people are putting together. - Next idea is a light manual, what yer sayin'? to start wiv. Hoyé

ow, and to make the whole caboodle even more confusing like, will any interested acrobat reader get this here link where the honorable Mr. Wossname, who by-the-way fixed his game by sorting an nVidia apparatus:

http://forum.pirates...67-doesnt-work/

doesn't say how to though. Provide it to ya so that someone can write to him. - Who is the first geezer what finds and makes contact with one of the original programmers then... toodle-oo. Whistle-fest, lala.

Does the vanilla verzy, the basic stock game do the tricks then, chap? that would be a great help, i daresay. Just as an aside, i started off with a complete new system. Thingy, POTCasting onto the f:\FUN partition etc. No additional program for Windows, except an audio-player. ..everybody begins with the heavy stuff, don't they? please give us a note then.

Forget it, I'm not going to stress over this. You guys should really work on making it easier to download. As of now, I'm not going to waste my time with PiratesAhoy. A website I had high hopes for, turns out to be a website with a good game, but a crappy community.

Thanks for your "help" mate.

There is a lot to talk about here, so first things first.

CaptainSteiner: Now we know your problem is not the graphics card. So, does stock POTC run? Sometimes stock POTC will work but build 14 beta 2.1 will not.

Also, do not touch the config.exe. It will always give that message until POTC is run the first time. You are not there yet. You will want to set your screen size in engine.ini later.

There are several threads where this issue is discussed but I am too lazy to dig them out, so........

Do you have Nero installed? Some people have reported that it causes problems.

Do you know what DEP is? With some security settings that will stop POTC from running.

PPH: POTC will not work with an Intel graphics chipset. SwiftShader helps but it will never run really good. ATI and Nvidia are fine, except for certain Nvidia motherboard chipsets that have both Intel and Nvidia graphics. Those need to be sorted out in the Nvidia control panel.

Intel graphics is common in notebooks and low end workstation desktops.

Finally, somebody with intelligence.

First off, I don't know were the stock version is at. So I am not sure if it works (A link would be much appreciated)

Second, I don't have Nero.

Third, I don't know what DEP is. (Sorry, I know that I'm a noob XD)

EDIT: I have an ATI RADEON HD 5570.

AHA!! This is a build mod to an existing game. :wp Where to get it? Pirates of the Caribbean by Akella came out in 2003 just before the first POTC movie. It is still available, but you will have to search for it. Amazon or Ebay might have it.

Recent activities by the authorities have kinda sorta taken the wind out of our sails as far as other locations. You can read the FAQ in the main POTC forum for possible help.

Here is a link. http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/14915-build-mod-and-forum-faq/

I'm not going to pay for a game just to see if it will work. Now, I've got a question to you guys:

Do you have a fix or not?

You guys make a game for the people to play, not to struggle on trying to start the game. I'm asking for HELP. It states in that little link you sent me, that if none of the above works, ask for technical help. Well I am asking, and I have yet to get a reply with actual help. I suggest you guys make it easier to download or something.

A few info that you should know:

-I ONLY downloaded the most recent Build, and the FULL version of that build.
-I've played Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships before, and it worked fine, but this game (Which looks similar to it) won't work for some reason.
-When I click config, notice that I said "rename.bat or options file is missing" MAYBE this might have to do with the problem.

A few things I suggest:

-Make a video on how to download and install this/these games on Pirates Ahoy.

I've downloaded SO many games (Don't worry, I have plenty of space available on my hard drive) and this is THE ONLY ONE that I've ever had problems with. If you guys notice that many other's are having this problem, then TRY and find a fix, don't release new build mod crap until you fix the download first.

So you want a complete working game for free. :nerbz How is your MegaUpload account doing? :walkplank

So, am I right in saying that you're judging our entire community solely by the content of this thread? That's not wise, I assure you.
Many of us here consider this community to be one of the most friendly and welcoming we know, but making hasty judgements can lead you to believe otherwise.
Please try not to dismiss us as a community before you get to know us properly. Once your problems are sorted out, things can be much more interesting here!

Buy the stock game. The mod won't work without it. :eek:k

As Hylie said, this is a mod for an existing game, which means the Build Mod is NOT a standalone game.
You must have the stock game installed first, and then install Build 14 Beta 2 Full on top of that for it to work. This is absolutely crucial.
If you get the stock game and still encounter problems, then post again and we'll help as much as we can.

Our download is not broken. I will concede, however, that the current installation instructions don't seem to specify that the stock game is required. Sorry about that.
Previous installation instructions outlined that point clearly, so that will be amended to the current ones to ensure this problem shouldn't happen again.
We just assumed people generally knew that the mod was for Pirates of the Caribbean and was not a standalone game, because we've not had many cases of confusion about that before.

So, once again, please don't make hasty judgements about us or our work. Many modders have worked long and hard on Beta 2, so don't knock it 'till you've tried it. Properly. ;)

You know, thanks for the help. That's all I wanted to read. "Buy the stock game, the mod won't work without it." That's all I needed.

Now onto the community:

I'm a new member to this website. When a new member has a problem, and he get's answers that make NO SENSE at all, that gives this new member a first impression. This new member doesn't act upon this impression just yet though. Now, this new member asks for even more help, and again, get's a reply that doesn't make sense. Now, this new member's first impression has been clarified. Your reply brought hope to my eyes. I was actually beginning to think that this website was full of idiots. But you sir, shined the light upon my eyes and made me smile.

Yes, I might have been a little to harsh, or exagerated a bit. But you've got to understand how stressful it can be to ask for help and recieve replies that make no sense.

Since I now know that I have to buy the stock version to run this mod over it, there is no point for me to stay on PiratesAhoy. I wish you guys good luck with your Pirate game. :sail

Welcome to the forum, mate!

I'm sorry to your first impression went a bit awry, but we really do have a first-rate helpful community here in general.
It is unfortunate that the first few posts were confusing, but help at PiratesAhoy! will always be given to those that ask for it.
While us Moderators and the Modders are not online all the time, we always try to post something useful when needed.

In this case, my apologies for not making it more clear that this is a modpack for an existing game and not a stand-alone game.
It seems I forgot to mention that in the latest installation instructions, even though it was mentioned in earlier versions. :facepalm
We would like to make a REAL full installer that doesn't require the original game, but of course that would legally not be allowed.
We may be pirates, but not THAT kind of pirates.

At the moment, I cannot be of any assistance with getting the original game because I'll still be working at sea for another three months.
Once I return though, I intend to improve the availability of the game again.
Be sure to ask again half May and hopefully I'll be able to be more useful to you then.

We would very much like anyone to be able to enjoy our hard work.
In the meantime though, please consider yourself welcome here and do not hesitate to join in wherever you feel like.

Aye. Thanks mate. For now, I will enjoy playing Pirates of the Burning Sea I guess. I'll try to get the stock version. Perhaps buy a visa giftcard, add the funds to my paypal account, and buy the game.

You guys are really good at what you do, you should give some tips to Flying Lab Software, it seem's as though they really need the help with their Pirate game. Haha. :doff

Thanks a lot, mate. We do try to do our best. We've got lots of good ideas and most of the time, we even manage to realize them.
It's always a challenge though to get things completely finished and stable, which is what we've been wanting to achieve for some time now, but haven't managed entirely yet.
Oh well, at least it's playable and very enjoyable in a great many ways.

In any case, be sure to drop by again in a few months' time and I'll do what I can to get you sailing our seas as well. :doff
