Help with forts, plz

I've tried lot of times to attack forts....

... I pounded them from distance, and each shot kills some fort crew (but the "hull" points doesn't seem to decrease)....

... but, when the crew number reaches 255, or 265, or 165, or some number... it stops to decrease, no matter how long I will shoot the fort with my guns... I even tried to close with grape, for no success...

... it's a bug? or there is a trick somewhere?

Plz help.

don't bother with the crew, aim at the top of the wall to disable the cannons! it takes a few tries, but then they suddenly blow up all at once. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> that will decrease the 'hull' percentage. you will know you are aiming at a cannon by the color of the indicator. remember: you don't fire manually from the deck by default! you have to press V to toggle this, then you can fire manually. it isn't nessesary to aim yourself, but you can keep aiming at the same spot if you do, increasing the chance of the cannons exploding.

oh, sorry, i thought that this was for PotC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> AOP might work similar, but i'm not sure.

I used to be able to take forts quite easily. I stopped playing some time ago when patch 1.42 was released. The way I did it was with a MoW, Warship and Lineship. I had the other ships there to prop up my landing force before I realised you could sneak in to town and do the same, which I think should be fixed as its an exploit. Anyways, my trick was to blow the fort, then sail away and wait 4 days. The fort is repaired and can be destroyed again but this time the troops left over is much less. Do this a few times, pocketing all the huge amounts of XP you can get, until you get the troops down to a manageable size.

However, I have recently started playing again with SuperMod with all 5 updates. Traded until I could afford a MoW, and then went XP farming at La Vega. Got from level 7 to level 11 in no time at all. Managed to get the troops left over down to 250. I thought this would be really easy as I had a ship full of soldiers. I even had 3 level 8 fighters with me too. Went in and got utterly slaughtered. Its not how I remember it under 1.42 at all!

My troops seemed to be dealing 2 points of damaged or thereabouts whereas the enemy were doing 20-40 or something similar. Two strong hits and I was dead. Even though we massively outnumbered them like 3 to 1 they still wiped the floor with us. When I was doing the same thing under 1.42 my troops had stormed their way up the steps of the fort and pushed through them before I could hit them myself almost.

Anyone else seen this, as I really can't see any difference between what I was doing last year and now. I even started playing on Cadet level so it's not a difficulty setting thing as far as I can see. My troops just seem to do next to no damage at all!

I have another install elsewhere running 1.5. I might try loading the save there just before I send the landing party and see how they fair there.

I am using ver 1.5 at the seaman level and I have had some success at taking towns. I usually use a ship of the line and bring another one with me to compliment my crew if they get shot up badly. I usually try to find a part of the fort where they can bring the least amount of cannon to bare on me and then I start destroying their cannon little by little working my way around the fort.

Once I have destroyed enough cannons the fort surrenders and I can storm the town. This is when I transfer soldiers from my second ship to make up for the butcher's bill on my own ship. I also like to have around 3 higher level fighters with me, all with good weapons. I like to have my character at a high level with good weapons too. Then I storm the town and sometimes my soldiers and fighters do all of the work for me.

I have to admit that there have been times where the enemy completly routed my men. Also, I haven't tried to take very man large towns. But, I find that being a higher skill level and bringing fighters with me along with using ships of the line really helps. Good luck!

I'm also using version 1.5 at Seaman level. I've managed to take several ports using a battleship, or more recently a man of war, with a frigate as the backup ship. (That's because I normally use the frigate for sea action but switch to the big battlewagon for attacking something which can't move. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

The annoying thing is that when half the fort's guns are knocked out, the fort is officially destroyed, meaning no further hits will harm the garrison. So I can't then close in to kill off more troops with grapeshot. It also means Tortuga has a unique form of defence; in my game at least, it only has 22 cannons, which means it only takes a few hits to destroy half of them, leaving most of the 2500 garrison ready to repel boarders... On the other hand, it can't do as much harm to my ship as other forts, so I hit it with grapeshot <i>before</i> switching to bombs to take out the cannon.

This is a technique i read somewhere else and it works.

After destroying the fort dont invade it.(press F3 to enter icon apperars). It will be reapaired in a week. Then destroy it again. This weakens it permanently. After a few runs you can invade the fort easily. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

In my first run i got into fort "ALONE". My crew were so weak that game game me no soldiers inside. After running this 5 times i was able to invade.
Or you could just capture 5 big ships and fill'em up with soldier.

You might have read it in this thread, a few posts up. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Memnoch reported a similar strategy on February 3 2007. Personally, I just prefer to go in with a man o' war. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> However, my technique for getting the man o' war in the first place differs from Memnoch's. Instead of trading to make lots of money and then buying the ship, I do it the pirate's way - watch the tavern rumours for a port being attacked, then go to the port, where there are usually some nice big ships with nice small crews just waiting to be boarded. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
