Howell Davis- a welchman and pirate- was known for his notorious raid on the Gambia Castle. Let me tell you a bit of what knowledge I know about the Gambia Castle. The Gambia Castle was along the Gambia river- it had markets, and several slaves- who waited in dungeons to be purchased by a merchant and sold to plantation owners. It was filled with money from selling goods, and slaves. It had several soilders, garrissons, and a fort with many cannon. Howell decided to plan a raid on Gambia Castle in order to steal the profit money, and other goods that pleased them. He sailed into the harbour and ordered all the men below deck except for those that were required for working the sails, anchor, etc. When Howell and 20 men dressed in plain coats came ashore- they were imeidatly brought to the governor- who at the sight of them, asked Howell where was he from and what was his cargo, Howell replied he sailed along the coast until he escaped 2 french Man O wars, and he originally came to trade for gum, elephant teeth and gold dust, but seeing this he was willing to trade his cargo of iron and plate for slaves. The governor agreed to slave him to the full value of his cargo.
Not suprisingly- the governor invited Howell and his men to dine with him, Howell seeing this replied that he must take care of his vessel first and he would return with a full cask of european liqour for him. Howell told his men his plan- there along the walls of the governor's place was several pistols, muskets and rapiers hung as decoration- which the men planned on using to take care of the soilders, he told two men to make conversaation with the two guards who were protecting the gold and money, when Howell gave the signal" A shot through a Window" they were to attack the guards and tie them, and when everything was ready the rest would help with the raid and they would profit.

Dinner was not yet ready so the governor cheerfully suggested to a make a bowl of punch to pass time- unaware of what was come. It was during this Howell took out a pistol from his coat- clamped it to the governor's chest and demanded the surrender of the fortt and all the riches in it. The governor, panicking promised a full surrender in which Howell fired a shot through the window and instanley like heroes the two men had gunned down the guards and sent them into a room. The rest of the crew joined in pushing all the cannon over the edge into the sea and took all the weapons hung along the walls.
For the night, they merrily spent it drinking punch, rum, wine, enjoying the wenches and partying. When morning came they went to pillaging- they took small items and gave them as gifts to the crew of a captured sloop they had taken, they took all the goods they wanted, anything that wasnt nailed down, though they found no money, they took 2,000 pounds in bar gold. After this they set free the prisoners and imeidatly sailed away in their ship knowing that their captain was the only one for them.
