Ahoy mates! :aar

This thread is intended to outline exactly which roles are available in the Hearts of Oak development team, as well as keeping track of who does what and showing where we have vacancies.
The team is split into separate groups, each specialising in particular areas, to make sure everyone knows what each other is capable of.

UPDATE December 2016: Please note we are no longer accepting applications until further notice!
The project is currently on hold while we decide how to move things forward.

UPDATE August 2015:
High priority roles have been updated, with some engine-specific details added where applicable. Some roles have been removed or renamed for clarity.

UPDATE July 2014:
Members in each team are no longer listed in this thread. Coordinators may view an up-to-date list of members in their team via the Members tab.
This thread has also be reconfigured to focus on high-priority vacancies, along with presenting a clearer view of the management team.

UPDATE January 2014:

As part of our new system to encourage active participation, all new applicants will be given a "Provisional" role when they join up.
As you complete tasks for the team, you will eventually be promoted to the group(s) of your choice.

Management Team
Please note: You may not apply to join a management role. New Managers and Coordinators are appointed by the existing team.

Project Managers
@Armada and @Flannery
These members work with the team Coordinators to drive the project forward, deciding on long- and short-term goals for the team.

Coordination
Each team listed below is assigned a Coordinator (sometimes more than one) to help manage and support their team. The Coordinators are your first port of call if you're looking for guidance or a new task to complete.

The Coordinators for each team are listed in this thread (visible only to members of the team).

High-Priority Vacancies
Below is a list of the roles we are in most need of at present, along with a brief description of each role.
WE DO NOT OFFER PAYMENT FOR ANY ROLES ON THE TEAM.

3D Artists
- Able to model any of the following assets to a high standard:
  • Ships (these are highly complex models that require skill and dedication to make)
  • Clothing items for characters (such as coats, hats, shoes etc.)
  • Buildings (including full interior)
  • Weapons (such as melee weapons, pistols, and cannons)
  • Scenery props (smaller assets that are easier to make and will help populate the game world)
- Able to produce LODs and UV maps (and shapshots if artists require them)
- Able to apply existing textures to models
- Able to export a model to FBX or OBJ format for use in Unity 5
- Assistance with research and/or complex modelling will be provided

Unity Developers
- Able to help produce core game mechanics
- Able to effectively collaborate with other developers
- Knowledge of C# or JavaScript required
- Familiarity with engine development highly desirable
- Details of game systems to build will be provided

GUI Artists
- Able to design and implement user interface elements in Unity 5
- Details of art style to aim for will be provided

Level Designers
- Able to piece together well-designed locations using predefined assets (or own work)
- Able to recreate historical towns using provided references and assets

Texture Artists
- Able to produce high-quality textures (including diffuse, specular, normal maps and so on)
- Able to work with modellers if needed
- UV map creation not required (unless agreed with a modeller)

Composers & Sound Designers
- Able to compose high-quality original music for the game
- Musical style to aim for will be explained by Coordinator
OR
- Able to provide high-quality sound effects for the game

How to Apply
If you wish to apply for any of the above, please do so by starting a thread in this forum to introduce yourself and your intentions. You may apply for more than one role.

No formal qualifications are needed to apply; you just need some free time and enthusiasm, though experience is desirable. You must also be prepared to learn how to do certain tasks yourself. We will not spoon-feed you!

If you know someone else that might be able to help, please point them in our direction!
Remember: we do NOT offer payment. We are seeking volunteers only.

Thanks for setting this up, Armada!

I will, of course, try to contribute to the management and coordination as well, just as I know you will, but it'll be great to not have that as my primary responsibility this time.
After all, I've got that for PotC already! Sort of.... :wp

I would love to work on the music and sfx for this game. Please place me in that department!

I've updated the list to include several more people. If anyone who is part of the team has not been given a role yet, please let me know which one(s) you'd like ASAP.

Testing, testing, ribbons for the first two roles are now being displayed. Check out Pieter or Brynn to see how it looks. :keith

EDIT: All ribbons live for members listed above. How do they look?

I've also now adjusted the permissions for these groups, so they can all view the Work in Progress forum.

No problem. Now we just need to fill all the roles! :checklist

OK, that's annoying. I've made a slight change now; is it still hidden?

Fantastic work Armada, the list is a brilliant idea, and that ribbon addon is looking better every time you add to it mate! :onya

I rekon I should be on there somewhere, maybe a Documentation/PR/Promotion group? I don't think there is really a need to add a new ribbon for that though, News Gatherer should cover it. I would also be willing to work with Brynn a bit, that is if he would like some assistance from a rather temperamental barbarian.

Ok its working now :) Ty
Good to hear. Apparently I made the same mistake for several other people, so that's fixed now.

Please note I've removed some people from the Modders group if they have been assigned one of the new groups and have not participated in any of our mod projects (PotC Build Mod, AoP2: GOF etc).
All the new groups have the same permissions as the Modders anyway, so nobody loses out. ;)

Thanks. Good point about a promotion group, too. I could probably add one to the list without creating another ribbon, as you say.
And of course there's no harm in you giving Brynn some assistance. He did say it's not a one-man job. :onya

Good thinking! Prevents ribbon-overkill too. :onya
