Guys - could use some help
First off, I'm not tech savvy:)

Just installed PotC ... it's the UBI Soft Exclusive game ... not sure if that makes a diiference

I also installed mod pack 12.
That's the only mod installed.

The game installed.
The mod installed.

I started the game, just to see if it worked and it looks good.
I get the mod initializing data, then the game takes over ... the opening dialogue; where's my stuff etc

Well, I'm just trying to get the hang of the interface within my "room".

But, I can't exit to the MAIN MENU ?
The ESC key does nothing.

It works to exit the character screen and other game related screens, but won't work from the game screen ?

I just wanted to try saving a game, deleting etc

My pre-game ritual ?

Please tell me I don't have to uninstall/re-install etc ... I'm physically disabled/wheelchair :)

I hope it's easily fixable.

If not, how do I save; exit my current game ?

Any ideas/help is greatly appreciated !

Hook - wow; that was fast.
Thank you.

I hope all the other keys/.pdf manual are correct :)

Nice site you have here !
I'll be back, as I have yet to play Sid Meiers Pirates ! or Sea Dogs.
I'm in a Pirate mood :)

Thanks Hook !

They are not. To see the proper keys, go to main menu, options, controls. Everything is there. You are free to reassign those, just don't reassign the sidestep buttons (a and d) - those are the only combination that works without a bug (any other assignment causes sidestep to get stuck).

Oh, and welcome aboard matey <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

DenDee - thanks.

Looks like the install of PotC or the Mod pack 12 messed up my OS ?

I couldn't respond earlier, as I had to rest and my internet/spyware/virus etc would not run.
I then decided to run a CHKDSK.

Seems either PotC or Mod pack 12 messed with some of my OS files ... I use XP/SP2

After CHKDSK finished, I was able to get online.

Just got up from rest and on bootup, the Blue WINDOWS screen noted that my NTFS(?) is corrupted ... that can't be good

It ran CHKDSK and I made notes............>
* deleted index $130 in file 24281

* then a huge scroll of deleting index entries CAD?????? in file 24281
* then a huge scroll of recovering orphaned files ... looked like the same CAD????? in file 24281

I'm not tech savvy and it looks like I'm playing with fire :-(
Either the game or the mod did something to my OS.

I thought my CHKDSK solved it, but just now, after no activity since my last post, on the bootup, files were corrupted etc....

I might uninstall all PotC ?
Or, I'll have to hire a computer specialist to figure this out.
Since I spend 6+hrs a day on my computer, I can't afford a meltdown/freezeup :-(

Some mentioned the UBI Soft/Bethesda/Focus version of PotC is bootleg and has problems ?
I don't know = seems like a licensed product to me
The Mod Pack 12 = I see no threads on problems

So, to put it plainly: "I'm nervous as hell".

IF anyone knows what all this NTFS stuff means; what's wrong or causing the problem, I'm all ears :)

As of now, I'll leave everything on my hard drive and see on future bootups, if the problem persists.

Darn, I was looking forward to PotC :-(

I am sure PotC has nothing to do with it.

Old hard disk? They do go sour after some... hmmm... 10 years or so.
Or maybe a virus. Even more likely, I say.

P.S. NTFS means NT File System, as opposed to the older way of storing the files - FAT (File Allocation Table). This is strictly technical and should not have any effect on you.

Den Dee - 2yr old computer(processor= 3.0 @ 800; hard drive = 160gb; RAM = 1gb @ 533; card = ATI X800XL 256mb; OS = XP/SP2; DirectX = 9.0c; One cd/dvd drive 40x16 = plain vanilla Sony(... to play my older UBI Soft games)
Dell 8400.
I think those are my specs ?

Never a problem; till now.

After I got it up and running, I did a check for: Starforce, Spyware(...Spybot + AdAware)
and Viruses(...Avast).
Every one came up clean(... except for my usual 15 cookies or so)
I never turn off my virus program :)

Been playing Baldur's Gate 2 SoA all night; no problems.

I'm not tech savvy at all = so I have no clue

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->where did you get build12 from, and did something called UNWISE appear in your C drive? i think it installs along with build 12 then takes effect when the cpu is rebooted, atleast thats what seemed to hhappen to me. though what its effect is precicely, remains unclear.

Raziel, just so that you know, unwise is the standard uninstall routine created by Wise installer. This has nothing to do with the problem Joe is describing.

Now, Joes machine seems to be fairly new and perfectly suitable for running PotC.

The only suggestion I can offer from a distance is to enlist a computer specialist, let him format all your hard drives (supposing you have more than one), reinstall the system (my guess is that your system is full of trash by now), and after he's done with that and your machine is in a proper working condition (make sure he reenables your internet connection, set up the firewall and preferrably antivirus and whatever else you might think of, i know you are no tech). Then reinstall your stuff, including potc. I myself do this kind of cleanup every half a year to a year. Don't forget to backup the things you see as valuable. Those would be your own creations, and maybe the saved games from your favorite ones (though i wouldn't recommend that, and especially not your potc saved games). It is a healthy thing to refresh the whole system every now and then.

P.S. My guess is that you are using XP... This is just my preferrances, but I disable the XP SP2 firewall, and install Sygate Personal Firewall (free) instead. For the antivirus, I use AntiVir ( a german antivirus, it always helps, even if it cannot combat the virus, there's always an option to delete the offending file).

Den Dee - I found a link here a few months ago to a site that has the builds.

Raziel - I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that route :)
One hard disk ... just what came with the computer + games/patches/mods added etc
Strictly a gaming computer.

Wish I was more tech savvy.
Seems like alot to do just to play a game.
This is my first and only problem of this type.
I'm guessing I've played 30+ games on this computer. Some dating back to Win 95/98.

I'm more apt to just look for another game to play.
Tech Spech don't come cheap :)
I haven't tried PotC since ... I decided to keep playing Baldur's Gate; for a little while longer :)

I also remember saving a game and getting a "Bad Save" ?
Maybe that did something ?

What I'll probably do is" just play it when I get the nerve".
Then, if we run into the same problems, call someone.

Just very frustrating = I really don't want to cause myself more problems; if you know what I mean :)

Installed/Played some Sid Meier's Pirates ! .... no problems
Installed Fable TLC + Baldurs Gate1 ... no problems
Installed these after = just checking to see if we're "good to go".
No more NTFS/CHDSK problems since.

So, whatever caused the OS problems was from PotC or Mod Pack 12.
I can't read all that "Mod initializing" info that precedes the game loading, or I'd post it.
Since I don't see any Mod Problem Threads, I don't know what to think.
I'm guessing the Mod changes game files = should not affect my OS(...XP Home/SP2).

Appreciate your help/ideas/advice !

Can't give you any more "ideas/advice". You think all your toubles are because of the potc or/and the mod. This is not true, but if you prefer to think so... As Jack Sparrow used to say...

"Your funeral" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Have fun playing other stuff.
