Maps for the dungeons

this might take the fun out of exploring though. i think you shouldn't have them at first. that they're buyable. i'll start on isla muelle today. i've got a good picture of how it looks from the air, so it shouldn't be a problem. although a map of the city would be nice, i think i'll be able to imagine the city myself. i know it fairly wel.

Of course, I plan to make those map buyable (both for islands as well as dungeons).

Thank you and Petros for working on the hardest part!

To Morgan Terror: I imagine buying the maps would unlock the interface. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Buyable?

And here I was planning on posting them here at PA for everyone ... for free <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

that's a good point there. shall we post them on the forum itself or not?

i didn't get the chance to do some work on the map today. however, i've got the preparations more or less done. i just seem to be really busy today.

Post them anywhere you like where we can find them. Forum, FTP, I don't think it matters as long as it can be found. I intend to post all maps on the <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/maps.htm" target="_blank">Maps page</a> on my site. Now if they could also be added into the game, that'd be cool. But just having them available at all would already be a big plus at this point. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

okay. now to draw out the outline for the island first. i've got that, so that's no problem. however: do the jungle paths actually align properly on the new islands? i don't think so. :?in any case, i'll make up things for the bits you skip in the loading screens. i'll try to make it look like an old map. 2D things in areas that should be 3D (like a cave entrance) and lots of seamonsters and ships on the sea, fake-looking waves, made with a blue outline at the top, a few trees on land here and there, things like that. i'm a little worried though about adding the city. it seems awfully big to draw it on the size of paper i have. i'll try to fully draw it, but i don't gaurantee success.

The way I'm doing this is not from the cartographer's perspective.

Full Island maps with exact coastline, will be too small to add the detail a lost soul in the Jungle would need.

I starting with a small piece of beach.
Going on from there to several jungle sections, I show the paths that branch to various, locations, caves, hideout, and Temple.

Just something a Pirate would have scribbled on parchment as a way to remember where he hid the treasure.
Nothing is in true scale, but just enough information, land marks, and direction, left or right, to be of use.

i see. that would become an awful lot of maps though. i don't really have anything against the idea, but the purchasing aspect does seem a bit complicated in that case, or at least unpractical. one problem i see though with isla muelle is: what to do with the rest of the island? it's completely unused for the most part. i'll just draw a lot of mountains and jungle i guess.

Why? I can see a problem with Cuba, or some island with 4 beaches and 7 or 8 jungles.

I'm fitting KhaelRoa on one map.
You'll see what I'm doing if I can get it posted tomorrow.

right. looking forward to it then. still, wouldn't it be a bit wierd to have two types of maps? although it does seem quite possible in reality, it might seem a bit odd from the player's perspective.

What do you mean two types of map?
Your type and mine?
Realistically, every map, especially treasure maps, would have been different, each created by their first owners.
No mass production here in the Caribbean.

I haven't worked on it at all today, but here is what it looks like right now.

Find attached the map stuff the SLiB modding team made for their mod. Might be interesting.

From when it was still the "S &" oops <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> I mean "A & M" team.

Versions of these would be great for giving people rough idea of where things are. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

They would be less useful for one lost <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> in the jungles unless we get an "on land" compass.
Or is that in Build 14 and you are hiding it from me? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Otherwise, they would need a lot of landmarks crammed onto this ity-bity paper. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />
Just realized, they would not be very good as "X marks the spot" treasure maps either. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/treas1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":treas" border="0" alt="treas1.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=225458:date=Dec 12 2007, 12:35 AM:name=Petros)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Petros @ Dec 12 2007, 12:35 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->From when it was still the "S &" oops <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> I mean "A & M" team.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

*farts* <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> ..S[Censored]T happens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

then why exactly are we drawing these maps if we have those? they'll come out roughly the same anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> besides, there's no way i can make my maps look as good as that by drawing by hand like i'm doing now.

so this will be like one of those navigational maps you see in other games as well on the radar? good idea as well!

Obviously those maps require some work (I'll want to remove static strings from them and make them dynamic in the interface) but it's great help. Shall I use them or someone can make those maps better?

I only posted these maps for reference: to show what the SLiB mod people did. They COULD be used, but they'd require a fair amount of work. Most of all because the land in the SLiB mod is not at all the same as the land in our own game version. There is no Charlestown on Nevis in the SLiB mod, all the jungles are different, apparently there is no French and Dutch side to Saint Martin, there are some towns on there that are not in our game, etc. So these maps, if they were to be used, would require a fair amount of work anyway. Personally I would prefer to using something made by one of our own community members over using the SLiB mod's content.

While we're at the subject of maps: Wouldn't it be cool if, when you buy a treasure map, you could actually VIEW that treasure map as well? Or at least view the treasure on the map if you have bought the map from the traders? Or something like that? That a red X would appear on the map, showing where to go?

I would also prefer adding all texts on the map as ingame code strings. That way we have some control over showing/not showing them. Same as has been done for the current Worldmap interface screen, only here all names are always shown. But in theory island names/town names could then be hidden until you have visited them. Perhaps it would even be possible to make the worldmap in multiple parts so that islands only appear on it when you've visited them. Combined with the DirectSail mod, this could make for some interesting gameplay. You could talk to villagers and they'd tell you about an island nearby and you can sail there in DirectSail mode and when you've found it, it appears on your map. Lots of gameplay opportunities, I think.

To Pirate_KK: On these maps you can also see what island and town names the Russians used for their own "Real Caribbean" changes. Of course we don't need to do it exactly the same. I think what you did with your "Real Caribbean" mod is actually really quite close to what the Russians did. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

They were doing one mod together, then split up or something? Then one mod died out and the other team went to work on AoP. If I am correct.

<!--quoteo(post=225458:date=Dec 11 2007, 11:35 PM:name=Petros)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Petros @ Dec 11 2007, 11:35 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->They would be less useful for one lost <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> in the jungles unless we get an "on land" compass.

An "on land" compass has not yet been made. Would be nice though. Step fifteen paces in direction ENE. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Would then also be fun to actually show your own position on that map the same way you can see you ship's position on the Worldmap interface. But for that, the map would need to really closely mimic the actual 3D model. That would complicate mapmaking quite a bit. Unless you make the map based on a location top view taken from the GM Viewer or something like that.

NOTE: When I refer to the Worldmap in this post, I mean the F2>Map interface and NOT worldmap sailing mode.

i've got the outline finished, and it looks as accurate as it can get to me. it also looks like i'll be able to fit the entire city on the map, atlhough i'll need to do some exploring in-game for the rest of the city. i can only memorize half of it with certainty. having a map of isla muelle itself is important. it's one of the most complicated cities in the entire game. the one i'm making looks like it would work good enough to find your way by.

I started working on this map based on the need/idea expressed here.

With this goal in mind my map would be useful for a player lost in the jungles on KhaelRoa, and would be very good as "X marks the spot" treasure maps as well.

BTW, I have 3 large and 2 small jungle sections on this map that do "really closely mimic the actual 3-D model"

The "Whole Island" trail maps would serve a different purpose in the build, and I'm not sure I know what it is.
I'll continue with my "Jungle Map" for the time being.
