Modding for COAS

AlexusB was not involved in the making of CoAS. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

That depends on how you view it, Pieter. AlexusB had a lot to do with developing both SLiB and Sea Legend Returns. Much of that content is in CoAS, along with a bunch of new stuff as well.

So technically AlexusB had a lot to do with the existence of CoAS, even if he wasn't one of the main coders for the final product. **grins**

Alright then; I'll agree with that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Man.. most of the ships in CoAS have butt ugly textures (Probably from AoP 1). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> very few are the ones I like.. ship models are pretty splendid but they really need the quality texturing you guys have here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Brig model looks nice but colorful and horrible texture ruin the fun. Good thing is there is one bad buccaneerish brig skin that I could layer paint to good buccaneerish skin. Two caravel skins are allready looking good IMO but caravel is a bad ship for combat.. due to horrible angle it can go against the wind. And the bigger ships that are meant for combat have butt ugly skins.. or at least ruining beauty of the ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ko" border="0" alt="ko.gif" /> Hey.. I remember someone here did some skins for that arabella ship and that warship thingy.. where are they? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Pieter?

Anyways.. I'm gonna attempt to change the Ian Sto.. forgot the name, anyways I planned to change his model to something more piratey. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> That gm viewer is quite useful for looking at the models. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Later I'm gonna make that brig to something more appealing to the eye.

The skins for the Arabella ship were made by Yo Ho Ho; they should be in Build 14 Alpha 9.

I just need the skins not the whole build mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I also want that capitan skin with bandana. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Right. And he´s co-founder of seaward.ru. Still doing their site. What makes you think, he was involved in CoAS? He was never a gamedeveloper, he is a webguy (Microsoft Dymamics AX product). Just curious..

OK, Pieter <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
But Edward Zaitsev (aka <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showuser=10687" target="_blank">Eddy</a>) is. He was the lead programmer of the project and may help to consult or with debugging.

Hello guys.

I ordered AOP COAS last thursday trough ebay. I bought it in Germany, since it is currently not available in Belgium. I would like to know from the Germans here whether or not there is a option in which language it is possible to install. I know that a normal company would do it, but with playlogic you never know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

If not, could someone who owns the English one plz share it's dialoge file <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

The download failed! Argh!.. it downloaded just about 250+ MB of it and screwed up. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> I hate it when it happens! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Gotta try again.

Skinning or layer painting CoAS ships will be MUCH easier because those textures don't have the curve they just go straight. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> It seems like the ship models themselves bend the texture on their model.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Nice feature. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

CoAS in terms of gameplay needs to be made easier, right now even with few encounters I get many squardons of ships after my arse. Don't let the amount of ships shown on the world map fool ya! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" /> There can be from 3 up to 6 ships and it isn't fun mowing them out when each of them tries to board me while I try to shoot them with the useless cannons... yes, cannons suck in that game. And boardings get annoying too due to enemies being unrealistically tough.. I can accept it with someone who is muscular but someone looking like a weak riff-raff off the street, COME f**kING ON! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> Made me feel like wanting to play Silent Hunter 4 and torpedo the crap out of battleships.. or just play Fallout 3 and nuke everyone. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Don't get me wrong CoAS has some good aspects but it seriously needs to be ALOT easier to play. I have never been fond of challanges and getting my ass handed to me, I want the game to be easy, fun, enjoyable and not ridiculously hard to play.

Good thing is that I managed to make the cannons more damage making somewhat.. and now it's off to make boardings easier. How? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I´ve faced alot of ships, but this is ridiculous, mostly the game crashes and that´s at least why we should reduce the encounternumbers, but the encounter-init file does not seem to count. I ´ve no idea what to do... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Try to start new game for the settings to take effect.. it did at least for the cannons. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

We should open a thread with all the bugs/unrealistic gamplay features that need to be modded + suggestions.
I have started with the improvement of the music, which is mediocre at best.
After my changes, I now can enjoy the game with music from good old PotC, from the PotC movie, from Sid Meier's Pirates + the Cutthroat Island Theme. Battles, jungle exploration, cities, taverns etc. feel more suitable now.

As far as a modding plan is concerned, I would propose something like this:
- Make a list of things that really MUST be changed for the game to be more enjoyable
- Finish the Secrets of Far Seas AoP mod translation (by Cap'n Drow)
- Finish the New Horizons PotC mod (aka Build 14)
- Put all good content from SoFS and Build 14 into CoAS

Of course the above could just take several years still. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

We could already start the thread to collect all the feedback/suggestion from the players while they discover them.

I would be able to fix some grammatical bugs for the English version (the German translation is very horrible and I avoid it though I am German) and missing description for quest ships.

If someone is ambitious enough, he could improve the ship's textures.

I would also like to get rid of that unrealistic and stupid WoW/Oblivion-leveling of items. This should be a serious game where rarity choose which items are in store and not level. If I am lucky enough to discover the Haudegen (the best medium weapon) in the beginning of the game, I have to think: Do I buy that very expensive weapon or do I invest the money in wages/repairs/new men?
There is a flag in ItemsInit: minlevel=0 or minlevel=1
This might be a boolean variable which determines wether an item appears straith into the game or only if you have reaches a certain level.
I changed all weapons/armours/pistols to 0 and today I will start a new game to test the effects on the game.

There are also 2 variables I have never seen in the game (and not in the item's description): Pierce and Block. Are they used?
A normal block defends against <b>all</b> normal attacks except the powerful strike.

I don't think there is a Pierce variable in the game right now. The fencing system is now so complex, I'm assuming the designers figured it wasn't really necessary any more.

Remember, in Seadogs and PotC you had only a basic attack and block, so the pierce and block percentages were required to give the fighting system a reason NOT to just stand there blocking. No matter how many people were attacking you, you could block every incoming blow.

Now with the new system, you can be knocked out of your defensive stance with a heavy blow or by getting shot.

If you swing, and the enemy parries, you take longer to recover and lose more stamina.

Things like that.

So I'm really not sure if a pierce/block system will be needed.
