New player with problems!

Hello folks. I was asking around for the ultimate swashbuckling game and was pointed to PoTC and your mod community here. I have a Dell XPS gaming laptop with an nvidia card and Vista. My copy of PoTC was ordered via Amazon and came with two disks and a .pdf manual on one of them.

Here are my problems. Vanilla PoTC only seems to run in a windowed mode and from the readme file I know I need to fire up the config utility. Only it claims the exe is missing (it isn't) or the options file is. Sure enough, no options file. I did a search of the forums here and tried changing options within the game (no file generated) and restarting my computer (no file generated). So, I seem to be stuck in window mode but I need full screen.

The next error came when I tried to install Build 13 of the PoTC mod and got a message that a file called ci0-config could not be opened.

Kinda lost in a couple different ways here and would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

I've seen that problem as well once. I still don't know why that happened. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
You can also enable fullscreen mode by opening engine.ini in the main game folder and setting <i>full_screen = 1</i>.
Which Build 13 are you trying to install? Build 13 Full or Build 14 Final? Try this instead: Reinstall the game, then install <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/build12_full.zip" target="_blank">Build 12.1</a> and check if the game runs properly after that. Then follow the instruction as listed for <i>Upgrade from Build 12.1</i> on <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/downloads.htm" target="_blank">my site</a>.

I also run PotC on a laptop with Windows Vista and a nVidia graphics card, so I know it can be done.

Thanks! I'll try and give that a shot. I tried Build 13 Full. It didn't actually install before it hit that error so I'll try working off 12.1 and then your upgrade if that works.

You could also try Build 13 Final then. Install that to a DIFFERENT folder than your main PotC folder, then copy all files to your PotC folder and run the .BAT files in the main folder. That should be easier.

Already did the Build 12. My god! I've only knocked around but this is a world of difference. The menu options, the difficulty levels, the default of run instead of walk and the changes to the main character! That's inspired. Custom clothing and sails and new dialogue text. I've seen some good mods in my time. Started messing around using them in Red Baron 3D. This is good stuff and I've only hit the tip of it. Or it could be that I'm biased for swashbucklin' games. Maybe both. Going to download Build 13 update now.

Oh, one note for anyone else following in my path. Vista's a treacherous wench. She didn't want me meddling with my engine.ini file even as administrator. Couldn't seem to find the file path or some such nonsense so I couldn't save over it. What you need to do is copy the file to your desktop, edit it there, then drag it back into the PoTC folder. You'll get the administrator prompts you need and can write over it. Full screen and mod are working!

Thanks for the help! And I voted for this mod on the survey poll.

That's odd. I have no such problem on Vista. I have turned off User Account Control on Vista though. That's the "feature" that asks you over and over again if you are SURE you want to do whatever it is you're trying to do. YES! I'm sure!!! Might help to turn that off.

New problem. While trying to extract the 13 build update into my PoTC folder it started off saying it would take 18 hours to do. That sounded odd but I went ahead. Everything installed alright until I selected the option for all old files to be overwritten (as opposed to individually okaying the overwrite for each file). Then the timer stalled at about 7 hours and started counting back up again. I'm now at one day and five hours for the files to extract and write over the old files. My guess is that this ain't right. May have to do with the weird permissions thing. I'll try turning that off.

WTF? That is REALLY weird. What program do you use to extract the ZIP files? Try and get WinZip if you don't already have it.

It's the default extractor in Vista. Going to get winzip now. But this has never happened before and the extraction of Build 12 worked fine. Taking User Account Controls offline shorted the time from 18 hours starting out to 3 hours starting out but once it hit 2 hours and change it started counting back up too. Bizarre stuff. I'm fairly new to Vista so alot of this is taking me by surprise.

Build 12 is a self-extracting EXE, not a ZIP file. I suppose that makes a difference.

Winzip hasn't stalled yet and it's showing me each file as it extracts. But this seems to be taking a much, much, longer time than Build 12 did for whatever reason. It's going to be a couple hours at least before it wraps up if it keeps going at this rate. If that's normal that's fine. I can wait. But it does seem a little odd.

It's not normal. WinZip extracts in a a couple of minutes at my place. Very strange.

Could well be this is some new unique problem to my system. Still extracting as we speak and about halfway done now. But it's not like my harddrive is constantly spinning or anything. Very strange. Thanks for your help and patience.

Edit: Installed at last. The new Build 13 screen came up but got a runtime error from the engine.exe. Uninstalling and starting again from scratch.

AGH! Please <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">enable error logging</a>, start the game and show the contents of system.log, compile.log and the possible error.log that are generated in your main game folder here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Will do. I'll try and get to it tonight or tomorrow. Do you want logs of each build (vanilla, 12 and then 13) to compare to each other? Well, worst case scenario for me is I end up with Build 12 which is still pretty good but I'd like to help you solve this mystery because it'll probably get someone else sooner or later too.

The logs of only Build 13 will be fine. I just want to know why your game won't run with Build 13. Hopefully we can figure it out and find a fix.

Didn't see a compile log. Thanks again. I'll sit tight on this until I get some feedback.

Sounds like a missing file. Please find it attached. Put it in your PROGRAM folder, then try again. Extract it from the ZIP-file first, of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Seems some files just didn't come through. I'd bet money there are more than just these two.

I have uploaded ALL Build 13 code files <a href="http://pafiles.com/build/b13_code.zip" target="_blank">here</a>. Extract that to your game folder and tell me what happens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
