On this date in the year 1494, Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Jamaica and claimed it for Spain during his second voyage, as this excerpt from WIKIPEDIA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaica) states:Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494. Columbus' probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Bay,_Jamaica). St. Ann's Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Ann_Parish,_Jamaica) was the "Saint Gloria" of Columbus who first sighted Jamaica at this point. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sevilla_la_Nueva_(settlement)&action=edit&redlink=1), which was abandoned in 1554 because of numerous pirate raids. Read about his exploits HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus)
