Really it was the first mega corporation that could influence governments, it also started and fought wars with entire nations! Through the British government the company enjoyed a extremely privileged position which caused much resentment among other competitors and held a powerful position in India for more than 200 years!

The East India Company (also the East India Trading Company, English East India Company,[sup][1][/sup] and then the British East India Company)[sup][2][/sup] was an early English joint-stock company[sup][3][/sup] that was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China. The oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies, the Company was granted an English Royal Charter, under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies, by Elizabeth I on 31 December 1600.

Also in this day in 1763 French admiral Pierre-Charles-Jean-Baptiste-Silvestre de Villeneuve was born, as you can tell by his name he was really really French! Pierre also participated in the Battle of Trafalgar [sub](not something for the resume i suspect).[/sub] In saying that, he was not without talent and did have a number of successful attacks against the English. The big mystery though is with his death......

Villeneuve was sent to England but was released on parole. He lived in Sonning and returned to France in 1806. He attempted to return to France's service. On April 22 he was found dead at the Hotel de la Patrie in Rennes with six stab wounds on the chest [sup][1][/sup] and a verdict of suicide [sup][2][/sup] was recorded. His grave became unknown.
