Solved Pirates attack me, but I lose relations if I attack them

Hello,

I'm playing on the latest update with the extra fix.

Pirates show as hostile in my relations panel, but they show as grey on my compass, but they still attack me. If I fire back my overall reputation suffers.

[Edit] I'm flying my personal flag.

I think I figured it out.

I wasn't using an enhanced compass, and my reputation was being affected by a quest I had forgotten.
