==== Nov04: Generating locationspecific characters: Bedroom encounters ====

Now that we have made all these nice locations we must fill them with action and gameplay, i.e. characters. The usual way would be to create new individual characters in the characters_init files. But this means a lot of work, the characters appear only after a restart, are always the same and disappear once you have killed them. Well, that makes sense but means that a location would stay empty if you plunder it once. So gameplaywise you could visit each location only once. Terrible waste, I say! And the more locations of a specific type you have the more work and filespace a generator saves. E.g. if we make a fort for every town we would have to make dozens of individual soldiers to garrison them. A generator would do the same with a fraction of the code.

For a start let's replace the usual "resident" in the bedrooms of our new mansions. Instead we will surprise the lady of the house there. As there are ladies and minors present I'd rather leave the content of this bedroomencounter to your creativity <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I will teach you only the technicals.

==== Nov04: Caribbean Commandos: raid forts from the LANDside ====

FAIK coastal fortifications were rarely attacked from the seaside by sailships, especially not by pirates and privateers with their rather frail ships. If Caribbean towns were sacked this was usually done by raids from the landside (as Drake and Morgan repeatedly did). Now you can replay those famous marches through the jungle in PotC. How to make a fort which is accessible from the landside has already been explained in Step 6 of this tutorial. Now we create soldiers and some decent fighting for it and let the fight result in the sacking of the town.

==== Nov04: The big sacking: Capture towns from the LANDside ====

How to generate highranking officials that yield a big prize, including the surrender of the town, if you survive your landraid.

==== Nov04: Annex 1: A Dialog for Bedroomencounters====

This simple dialog gives you three options if you surprise the lady of the mansion in her bedroom:
1. Be rude and loose reputation
2. Be greedy and get a jewel (of random type)
3. Be courteous and gain reputation

==== Nov04: Annex 2: A Dialog for Capturing Forts ====

This simple dialog gives you three options if you survive the fight with the "Fake fort" garrison and adress the "vagabond"/civilian (in this case a highranking "envoy") :
1. Be bold and demand the surrender of the town. You have an 20% chance that you can ransack it.
2. Be greedy and mug the envoy (up to 10000 G)
3. Be a good diplomat and use your strong position to get an amnesty and a LOM

I just put up my very own tutorial on the Wiki - <b><a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=AddingSkinsToTailor" target="_blank">Adding new character textures (skins) to the Tailor Shop (POTC Community Modders Build 12)</a></b>! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Hope this helps everyone who is interested in adding their own retextured characters to the tailor shops in PotC! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

What do I do if I want to use an existing face on a -slightly edited- model?
I especially like the face_31, the one that´s connected with the French officer. Now, that guy´s model got a blue suit, I´d like to have the same guy, with a `gray-brown` suit (like the one in the picture). For that, I gather, I have to change the texture of the model.

I almost forgot: Does inserting new textures in Build 11 work the same way as in B12?

You can do that with the original skin of the officer. I have one, if you wish I can email it to you so you don't have to make a "clean install" of PotC to get it back. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Only thing is that in B12, Facemaker.c got moved, if you're making a character for sale at the tailor or for use as an officer. (with the different sizes of icons &tc) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Loading screen? I never see any loading screens...When loading the sreen is black with the Orb turning in the lower right corner. A problem?

No, I´m talking about the Face_31 in the interface/portraits/256/ directory. The texture I got changed already (i think) and saved it as a new file.

And I don´t quite want him for sale, I´d like him to be my default skin.

There's a loading screen for FdF when you change from one section of town to another that shows the guards at the gate - and they're in the original brown and red uniform (which was changed to blue and white by modders)

The way to save your newly textured file so you can use him as your default is to follow the instructions in my tutorial on the PotCWiki - <a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=AddingSkinsToTailor&v=17ue" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...ToTailor&v=17ue</a> - you'll need to designate that the portraits (either existing or your own) correspond to your model. You need the portraits to run this model as a player character in the game.

But instead of making the entry for the tailor shop, you should edit <span style='color:darkred'>PROGRAMDIALOGSMalcolm Hatcher_dialog.c</span> -

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->  case "blaze":

     dialog.text = "OK, I'll have the clothes ready for you before you leave the ship.";

     Pchar.model = "blaze";

     facemaker(pchar);

     Link.l1 = "Thanks.";

     Link.l1.go = "start1";

     SendMessage(PChar, "lss", MSG_CHARACTER_SETMODEL, PChar.model, PChar.model.animation);

     ExecuteCharacterEquip(PChar);

     if(Pchar.location != "Tutorial_deck")

     {

   Link.l1.go = "exit";

   if(NextDiag.Tempnode != "Questions") NextDiag.Tempnode = "start5";

     }

 break;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->Just change <span style='color:darkred'>Pchar.model = "blaze";</span> to the name of your new character skin, and when Malcolm asks you what you want to wear, just tell him "the usual" and you will have your new skin for your player character! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I hope that makes sense. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

Post a pic of your new skin when you have him ready, I'd love to see what you've done! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

No, there´s no loading screen - ever. Or it loads so fast it doesn´t appear, which is unlikely.

With the wiki instructions, I should be able to do it.

Tell me where I can upload pics and I´ll be happy to. Maybe I´ll get a first version of "Rochefort" up as well. Funny thing - among the French family names, there´s one "Rochfort". For him, I think I´ll use the Dutchman with the mustache. Or I´ll take that head and use the body of the french soldiers, they´ve got this nice tunic with open sleeves. Will painting on an eyepatch do or does that require actual modelling? If the latter, I´ll not be able to do it.

Then there´s another thing: I´d like to replace the english soldier skins with something that would be more likely to the period (I´m starting in 1657) than the one they wear right now It´s based as well on the french officer´s skin with the broad laced collar, a red tunic and grey hats in the style of the french soldiers. I suppose Inez Diaz´ tool will be the instrument to do that. And I´m interested in changing the weapons soldiers use. Common soldiers rather ought to use a Longsword (based on the Vagrant) and officers diferent ones, depening on the nation: Englishmen and Dutch should use something based on the Windmill Slayer (Norringtons sword in the movie looks much like one to me, the handle at least), French officers one based on the Silver Leaf and Spanish and Portugese a variation of the Conquestador.

<!--`QuoteBegin-v_Grimmelshausen`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(v_Grimmelshausen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->No, there´s no loading screen - ever.
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Wow, that's odd. So when you go through a gate or into a different section of jungle or into a store or through a door you don't have any loading screens? Very strange. Wonder what causes that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> This game mystifies me <b><i>constantly!</i></b> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Getting pictures to post here requires you have someplace on the web to store the images - usually people use free webhosting or picture hosting sites - I use my own website domains for the hosting so I don't know where to tell you to look for one. Someone else should be able to help you with that.

Anyhow, once you get the online host for your pix, you can remotely link to them like this:

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->
yourpic.jpg
<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->See you need to bracket your picture url with the <span style='color:darkred'></span> tags. Then the pic will show up here.

Thus <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->[img]http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/aufort.jpg<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->will show you this pic:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/aufort.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Which is the French officer in the original color scheme of the French uniform. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

You need to model an eyepatch, because painting it on the skin would not close up the active eye hole - you will get an eyepatch with an eye in the middle of it if you don't close up that eye! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Looks really odd! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Maybe ask Alan Smithee about the modeling, he seems to be making some headway in learning to do it and I believe has made some models with eyepatches.

It would be nice to have uniforms that are more "period" to the date in the game. Of course you know about the big Napoleonic war uniform mod but the "correct" (whatever that means, heh!) era for the game is really the mid to late 1600's. It would be cool to see what you've got in mind! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Inez's Tool is amazing, isn't it? We are lucky she decided to share it with us - it's become so very useful for so many things! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-v_Grimmelshausen`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(v_Grimmelshausen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->No, there´s no loading screen - ever. Or it loads so fast it doesn´t appear, which is unlikely.
I think its simply the problem that you've got a localized version and the most loading sreen pictures are in a `language-named` subfolder.
Have a look at <b>RESOURCETexturesLoading</b> folder. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> Hey Cat, can you send me that model? It´s perfect, exactly what I wanted! I can PM you my address, if I didn´t put it in my profile. I´d be very thankfull indeed for that guy.

For the common English soldiers, I thought to use that same body, color the doublet red, maybe the trousers grey and take the french common soldiers´ heads with grey hats. That´s almost what the english soldiers look like in the ´60s version of the Three Musketeers (with Charlton Heston and Faye Dunaway). The officers can stay the way they are, makes for a greater difference between the two classes, which was usual.

I know about the webspace and I think in one or another thread there´s an adress to free webspace for uploading pictures.

About Rochefort, I can try to make his skin without the eyepatch for starters and then send it to Alan. He´ll need a unique weapon, however. Something like a Silver Leaf with a golden handle, similar to that modded Corsair´s Pride.

@emrep: Do the loading screens show in your game?
