POTC Modding Wiki <--- Tutorials Here

Yes I can email it to you, no problem! I'll send one of the common soldier textures too, so if you want to use elements from it, you can. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Got it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> I suspect that by now, you have, too! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I do, as I already PM´d to you. Thanks. I´ll have to rename the file if I don´t want to overwrite the existing french officer and soldier, right? The rest, I hope I can do with help of the wiki.

Yes, you should rename them if you want to use them separately from the regular officer or soldier. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Now, this weekend I got some things done, I implemented the original Frenchman as a suit for myself, then I recoloured the portrait pictures for the french officer (it seemed strange to me that he had a brown suit in the porttrait and a blue one ingame, adjusting that was easy enough). I also made a new skin:
<img src="http://xs18.xs.to/pics/05091/AdventurerPotC.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I did it on inspiration by the adventurer´s picture in Pirates! Gold. I´d like to do one based on my avatar as well, but there´s no modell with long hair and a three- cornered hat.
The only thing that didn´t work was adding a few new swords, though I kept exactly to the wiki tutorial <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> . I meant to make some for the soldiers and officers, so they don´t run around with sabers any more. I felt a sword based on the Vagrant much more fitting for the common soldier. For the officers, I intended to use the Windmill Slayer modell for the English and Dutch officers, the Conquistador modell for the Portugese and Spanish and the Silver leaf modell for the French officers.

It was a hell lot of work changing all the character files, just to find out it didn´t work because the swords weren´t loaded <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Looks nice, Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

It's funny - you want a tricorne with long hair like your avatar, and I want the hat like the French officer but with shorter hair! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

We just have to become modelers! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I eventually want a character to match this portrait of Catalina de Erauso:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

That would entail the French officer's hat with the face with NO modeled beard, a Dutch cuirasse (no riding plate below waist), and the puffy French sleeves - so I compromised with this, but I hate the hair! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

`catdE-1`.jpg

Yes, she's supposed to look like a man. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thanks for reminding me of the elements you wanted for your model, Cat; I wanna see what Inez' tool can do... I could use either a French soldier's head or that will one, and doesn't one of the Portugese soldiers have long hair? Her tool might make a better matchup possible.

And Grimm: A guy with a hat and an eyepatch isn't possible without more hardcore model editing than the resizing and moving Inez' Tool allows. But on my list of stuff to do eventually will be a French soldier with an eyepatch. For his head you have three options: There are two pirates with eyepatches, the models corsair_3 and I think pirat_9, and one of the "bocman" models, as well as a "sailor," uses two different eye colours... it's used for Zaid Murrow and a tavern gambling pirate, and you can tell one of his eyes is a sort of creepy milky white. So maybe you could paint an eyepatch on him, and paint over that one eye the same colour as the patch, and it'd have the same effect.

But in that case I´d have to use that modell as well, right?

For once, I´ll do a Rochefort modell with two good eyes, maybe we can get the eyepatch into it some time later. As well, atm I´m more concerned with the weapons problem, for one reason or another the game doesn´t initialize the ones I´ve added, though I kept precizely to the Wiki. Seems strange, but I guess, that´s modding for you <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Annoying as hell, but once you started, you can´t stop.

Which steps did you cover for adding your new weapons? A lot goes into it... 1) the models and their textures in the correct folders... 2) adding them in the inititems.c file, and in the items description file... 3) they need interface textures, so you get textures for those and reference them in a pictures file in the ini/texts/english (I think) folder.

No, I´ve done it precisely according to the wiki tutorial. However - as I know now - I have to add them as well into the table in the iteminit- file when I use the weaponsmod. So, that problem is solved.

But there´s another one, with adding a new character. I´ve done everything to the letter as the tutorial says to do it, but all the time the game crashes when I enable that tutorialmod in buildsettings. It´s not the model, as it´s the same in the picture above. So, for my personal character it works fine.

Annoying as hell, but once you started, you can´t stop.
HA, no kidding! That's why I made this guy! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> Really says it all!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> It's a sickness... But darnit, it sure is fun... We're all just masochists, I think. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-alan_smithee`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Thanks for reminding me of the elements you wanted for your model, Cat; I wanna see what Inez' tool can do
Heh... Thanks, Alan... I appreciate the offer.

I want the hat that's on the French officer, and barring that (his head has a modeled beard), the one that's on the French soldier - I used Soldier_Fra4.gm for the character I created. But as you see from the portrait, I'd like the cuirasse from a Dutch soldier, and NOT from either the Portuguese or Spanish.

And I HATE the hair on the French military... What I did was the best I could do at the time. If I use a Dutch soldier body and the French soldier head, the hair is still a problem and a lot of the head is completely missing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

I know, I'm picky, and I really should just learn to do it myself! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> At any rate, it's not really important; I have that model I posted above, and she's fine for now... Really like the face... I want to fix the clothing some, it's not exactly what I want, but for now it's fine. No need to do any modeling work for me for now... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Nathan Kell made a modeled eyepatched version of my Sneaky Trader - and I was able to use it successfully in the game - so editing some of the face to close up that eye and flatten it out so you can make a painted eyepatch might not be so difficult... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I think... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

That *is* a good idea, Alan, to use one of the models with the two different color eyes - and paint black over the one eye so it does not show the opening... Heh... Sneaky!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

<b>Grimm,</b> are you using the tutorial I wrote about adding a new character to the tailor shop? Because the other tutorial is for B11 (I think) and it's different now... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> What exactly is happening?

For adding skins to the tailor shop, I use your tutorial, that´s right, and it works just fine.
But for generating an NPC I heeded the other one (it said it required B11 or later, so I figured, nothing was changed with B12, obviously a misconception). What happens is, that when I start a new game and it´s supposed to reinitialize, the screen freezes and nothing ever happens. Sometimes I can get out with the windos button, sometimes I have to reboot, but neither `ALT-TAB` or `ALT-DEL`-CTRL work.

Yes, that tutorial is not quite right for B12.

To make an NPC, you just don't need to make the portraits or make an entry for the facemaker, or add the skin to the tailor shop. Just create his character profile for the appropriate town, and then call him for whatever quest you're working on.

My character Armand Delacroix, for the "Help the Lady" quest (end of the Fred Bob quest), is one example of an NPC that I made - he's not ever used as an officer, so you don't need portraits, and he's not in the tailor shop or the facemaker.

Hope this helps! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Well, as it appears, it´s the function to create the character, that´s giving me troubles, according to Scheffnows tutorial, I used the ref Character = gGetnewCharacter (*Name*) function. Fact of the matter, I copied that whole part out of the wiki into the newly created c- file.

Now, whenever I enable this TutorialMod, I crash. Here´s the Compile log, the error log and the system log, I hope they are of any help.

Hummm, did you alter models.c ? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I haven't had much time to look seriously at Scheffnow's tutorial to see how he suggests doing it - so I can't quite track what might be causing your troubles. I wish Scheffnow was here to help - he has been REALLY busy with real life lately and has not been modding at all.

To my mind, with the way we've set up the CVS and the Build installer, needing to be careful about overwriting these files with another mod has become a thing of the past. With this in mind, I can see how Scheffnow's tutorial might overcomplicate things...

The only reason you might want to be this careful about adding another character is if you were creating a NPC for your own personal use ONLY and not releasing them for public use. Otherwise, I'd just go with the far simpler way of my earlier suggestion - just add his profile to the proper island and call him for whatever quest you're working on. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Updated "Location Cloning I" with a reference to Inez' Tool and added her helpfile as Tut (so that it get's the attention it deserves <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

That's a problem of mine I think, in that the function referred to in the wiki has a different name in code. I thought I'd fixed one or the other, but I guess not. :

Edit: Checked and the function is indeed in the build, in Models.c.
What through me off is I had a similar function in Characters.h, FindBlankCharSlot(), but it returned an int (the index to the slot) rather than a ref to the slot itself as Scheffnow's does.

Alrighty, as promissed inthe thread of the 74th, a tutorial for Walk Files was posted in the wiki.

I was finally able to also determine all the 7 animation types in the walk files.

Enjoy!

Note: Inez Dias TOOL also has functionality for Walk files now, so there is Choice for those that do not necessarilly use Maya.
