Practicalities of being an old fashioned Pirate.

if'n ye be needin' a man handy with the long range water balloon launcher i'm yer man, i'll sit up in the crows nest fer ya an' pick off anyone with scrambled eggs on their covers. Been known to hit em in the head at 500 yards on the range. But if'm ye prefer to give me a coveted tennis ball mortar, i'll lay it on em starboard like.

Soak the tennis balls in something dark that will stain, and thwack 'em on their sailing whites! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

You a genuine marine, DeCuervo? If so, you're definitely in. If not, then you must pass the THREE TRIALS (dangit, I keep letting people into my crew, and I keep forgetting about those stinking trials <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> )

And no, Catalina, you can't have a horsewhip - that's strictly for `morale-boostin`', not quartermasterin'.

Now a cat'o'nine, THAT be for quartermasterin!

ok better put me down for the MWR officer - my cooking has been fairly described as 'nearly poisonous' in the past <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
And dont worry i can crack the whip when asked by the capn - its kinda the job i have to do at work now and again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

aye lad I be a Marine, served from `94-98` in Alpha 1/5. But i'll take yer trials if'n ye want me to. Cat, you're diabolical, they'll never get the stain out after I be soakin' the tennis ball in raspberry jam fer a fortnight. Err, you don't really have a `cat-o`-nine do ye?

<i>swimming</i>

Ok i know in british naval history, it is recognised that many sailors in the navy(through choice or `press-ganged`), could not swim.
Was this the same for Pirates living in the Caribbean? - i find it hard to think so, what with very real chance of falling in during boarding actions and shipwreaks etc.
In the warm waters of the caribbean you would expect people to want to get in the sea as much as possible(i know in papua new guinea thats how i felt!).

Hummm, I'd imagine it would have a lot to do with culture - at that time, there were some people who had quite an aversion to water - something about their beliefs regarding how one might catch the flu or other at that time rather deadly diseases...

I know *exactly* what you mean, though, about those nice warm waters in the Caribbean! I didn't want to get out, either... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Perhaps if you were exposed to the warm waters of the Caribbean all your life, you would be less adverse to swimming than if you'd been born and raised in England. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Thor - I don't know the historical specifics, but I think you raise an interesting point about pirates perhaps being more inclined to learn to swim than an "honest" sailor. Seems to me that it would only be a matter of time before a pirate has to jump overboard to make an escape, gets dumped overboard in the heat of battle, or gets knocked out of his rowboat by a cannonball.

How else ye gonna take yer very first pyrate ship, but by a swimmin' out tew it an unsuspectin' sloop wid a knife in yer teeth an' crawlin' o'er de rail drippin' wet! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> Ye cain't swim, ye cain't be no pyrate lest some one GIVES ye yer first ship! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Bilgemunky, me matey! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Tell ol' Fred Bob true! When we gonna be goin' out on sea trials an' exercise de great guns? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I'm 'fraid twon't be for a spell yet, me mate. I've a time 'head of me afore I'm old 'nuff to get away with this sort'v endeavourous undertakin without landin' m'self in the brig.

Methinks we can't cast off in earnest tills our average age is at least 65 - only then can we look the coast guard in the deadlights with full conviction 'n say "Sorry sir, it seems I fergot ta takes me medication this morning. That's alzheimer's fer ya."

But don' let the extreme `forward-thinkin`' nature of this scheme deter ya Fred Bob (or the rest'v ya lot, fer that matter.) Now's the time to prepare. Ta hone our skills till ya could filet a fish with 'em. We's also gots ta select a proper home port 'n decide on the best sort of ship. Research potato cannon technology, and bone up on geometry so's we can fit as much rum aboard as humanly possible. Mebe even collect a few more officers, and p'haps a lawyer.

Yup - we've got our work cut out fer us, mates.

I think we need cool names for both our ship and perhaps our crew, as well.

Fred Bob, Lady Catalina and I are already members of the Mo' Rum Tavernacle Squires, but "Bilgemunky's Marauders" strikes me as having a nice ring to it, and may well serve to strike fear in the hearts of those inclined towards panic and indecision.

A cool name might also serve in attracting more recruits for our crew.

I feel very strongly that any lawyer being considered for a position, or association, with this endeavor would have to pass the "three tests", with very high marks indeed. It has been my experience that lawyers rarely make the cut in actions involving fun, initiative, or daring, and also exhibit a strong inclinations towards trying to bogart the available pizza.

P'haps we should open the forum to name suggestions, and the best can be voted one?

As to the ship name, I've always been partial to "The Raging Benthos" - but I'd love to hear other ideas.

I think we should vote on each others pirates name, like Cat could be called Cat the Flayer, or Cat the Cutter, or Cat the Casterator, and so on. (heheheh, just joking Cat, you'd never casterate anyone, would you?!?)
