Real quests like in Sea Dogs?

JollyRogue

Sailor Apprentice
Ahoy!

So. I finally found some time to start playing this game. I used to be a huge Sea Dogs fanatic (you might know me from the Sea Dogs mods; Marijn, Orange Brotherhood, or you might not). Anyway, I don't really get this game yet.
My main question is; are there more types of quest than just 'go deliver this, or get this from there within so many days'? Are there also real 'quests' like in Sea Dogs, where you had to solve mysteries, speak to different charactars? Or is it basically Sid Meier's Pirates! but with a smaller world and nicer graphics?
I know there is this main quest, but already only the dialogues turned me off on that one. Also; it's not that long. After a few hours I already feel like this game will be more of the same every quest. Or are there some real adventures in the game?

Regards,

Marijn

Welcome (back) to the forum. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Did you ever play Pirates of the Caribbean? Because as far as I'm concerned: "Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons" all the way!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

No, I was too dissapointed with what they did to all their great ideas for Sea Dogs 2 (multiplayer, etc) that I boycotted the whole thing. Would you be able to answer my question on AoP? If there are also quests other than 'go from a to b and do this'?

PS) Why are you're sailing an East India Man, the Amsterdam is heavy and doesn't have that many cannons <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />!

Hey there, Marijn! I remember you. Welcome back, mate.

Now, on to your question. In a nutshell, no. There is a half-arsed attempt at some quests, but bad translations, incomplete stories and other various 'bugs' make the first AoP an only okay game.

Adding to it the Supermod makes the game eminently more playable, but still doesn't add much in the way of quests.

Now we come to the russian mod called Secrets of Far Seas. This mod adds much of what was missing in the original AoP. Missions, stories and more.

The mod is still in translation but it will prove to be a huge boon to AoP players everywhere.

Then we come at last to the newest game in the series. City of Abandoned Ships. I've only played with the russian version of the game so far, but from all I've seen there and read in the various forums, this newest member of the seadogs family finally begins to bring the promises made for Seadogs 2 to fruition.

This new game has all the features of seadogs, pirates of the caribbean, Age of Pirates and the various mods done for each of the above games.

Happily, the western release of the game has provided access to the program folder, so we can once again mod the game to our hearts content.

Hope that answers your first question as well as any other possible questions you may have.

You shouldn't think of it anymore as a failed Sea Dogs 2 now; it's becoming a game to be proud of. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Thank you both very much! Ah, it's too bad about the quests. But the more reason to look forward to the new game. Also; that Cpt Blood game (still my favourite movie of all time, still have to read the book), was that any good?

I'll give PotC a shot sometime. And @Pieter Boelen, hopefully they'll complete the Seven Provinciën sometime in Lelystad, that one should be the most beautiful. And; are you in the navy? Already had to chase pirates near Somalia?

JollyRogue, regarding Captain Blood: No! Just let that one pass <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Indeed, from what I've seen of the Captain Blood game, its going to be a funky cross between an age of sails type game with lots of weird Anime type stuff thrown in like gatling cannons and other insanity.

It'll be a funky fantasy retelling of the story, NOT keeping to the original story as it was written by Sabatini.

For possibly an arcadish sailing game might be fun.

But if you are looking for something that is historically accurate and keeps to the original intent of the written story, you will likely be disappointed.

True. It's cruiseships for me. Though so far I have been able to avoid the main pirate areas.

Had a great time watching it.
For the game, listen to what Cap'n_Drow says; the screenshots looked THOROUGHLY stupid.

Would be nice if she were finished. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

thanks again for the answers.

since you already allowed me to go off topic (wouldnt expect anything less on a pirate forum, best forums on the net <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />); one more thing on cpt blood:

<b>Phillip Noyce Developing Captain Blood
</b>
Phillip Noyce has come onboard to develop a remake of the classic swashbuckler "Captain Blood" for Warner Bros. with an eye toward directing.

Warner is developing "Captain Blood" as a possible U.K./Australian co-production. Bill Gerber is producing.

Errol Flynn starred in the 1935 original, directed by Michael Curtiz, as a doctor wrongly sentenced to slavery in the Caribbean, where he and his comrades become avenging pirates. It was nominated for the best picture Oscar.

Noyce has also been attached to direct "Edwin A. Salt," the Kurt Wimmer-scripted thriller that Columbia Pictures has been developing.

Interesting. I'd welcome a colour version, if done well. I'd welcome ANY pirate movie, if done well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
