Removing StarForce

Peter Willemoes

Corsair
Storm Modder
Dont know if this is known already, but the software-company that made starforce released a removal tool. Although they still maintain the sole rights to host and distribute this tool, its freely available <a href="http://onlinesecurity-on.com/downloads/sfcdrvrem.zip" target="_blank">here.</a>

Thanks Peter. I'm thinking this thread should maybe be moved to another forum though. PotC doesn't have Starforce. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The tool actually doesn't remove StarForce - it just turns it off. I tried it, and there stupid protection program was still on my machine afterwords. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Really, Stallion? I just got a John Clancy-games bundle, they all seem to use starforce, but not as agressive as the one in AoP - I think they might have been removed. At least, nothing comes up in the registry.
Do you happen to know where yours is located? I´d better check my assumption out.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> To install SotfS org version and than any of the mods on top the issue of Starforce doesn't come up!
However if you want to play the org. version a screen comes up warning you about this ugly thing!
Any Pc Game having this crap on is on my blacklist, don't care how good the game is! And if you think there is no entry in the registry, think again!!! Those Buggers flogging of this crap are very sneaky and most probably hiding it in Win/sys
somewhere. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/readon.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="readon.gif" />

It's in WINDOWS/i386 - check all the files that start with "sf", but check the Hidden Devices in the Device Manager first. If you decide to remove StarForce once and for all, uninstall all the Device Manager entries, then remove the "sf" files. Then, you'll be free of StarForce. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Of course, if that program actually works, let me know - manually removing it is a time-consuming bugger. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I understand that StarForce puts an uneditable entry in the registry using unprintable characters. You need a special application to change those to normal, then you can remove them.

I had a link to a site that told exactly what to do, but the site is no longer there.

Shame on you! SplinterCell is a very sneaky pirate game with big knives <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
