Here is something you don't see every day! An 85 foot replica pirate schooner on a charter cruise to St Kitts was demasted just south of Cape Sable Island two days after leaving her home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. According to a post on their Facebook page, the crew are fine and there were no injuries. A 69 year old man was in the temporary wheel house when the mast came down, but fortunately escaped without a scratch!
The schooner was rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Clark's Harbour, and towed into Clarks Harbour., and they are awaiting repairs. You can see some pictures of the damage over on their Facebook page, as well as some other photos of her from happier times. They are estimating at least a couple of weeks to make repairs.
According to their web page, which is not very easy to ready, the Liana's Ransom is gaff rigged, square topsail replica schooner that offers week long $12,000 charter cruises to the Caribbean, usually around the British Virgin Islands. She is captained by a retired Canadian naval officer and can accommodate up to 8 passengers. The crew usually dress in replica pirate attire and will provide the same to passengers, along with replica flintlocks. They will also teach you the basics of how to fire her 4 replica cannon, and swing from a yardarm. Of course, the cannons are just replicas and only make noise and a lot of smoke, but pretty cool none the less.
