Which "piratey fonts" are you referring to? The PA! logo's main font is staying put, for the record.
And the HoO logo isn't really meant to come across as 'piratey' in the first place. It used to look very different until we adopted the flat aesthetic.

Exactly. The HoO logo font looks good partly because it appears credibly 18th century. Which inherited it's typography from renaissance. And not something Hollywood 'creatives' made by directly quoting imaginary pirates' artifacts, like burnt parchment (sorry PA! logo fans ;) ), in order to herd people to a theme park. Thank you, Haereticus.
IMHO unfortunately it stays put, but I know, logos are not for changing at every opportunity. Let's just limit flamboyant fonts from then on. By calling HoO font 'piratey' I'd rather used 'grungy', 'textural'. Piratey are PA! and one Captain Murphy uses for video titles (Can't help but hate it's present usage).

For a secondary font, we could use a kind of period, cursive handwritten-type font. That would go a long way towards conveying the look we want to convey, and still provide a pleasant contrast to the Fell Types.

Deffinitely a sensible possibility. I'm just a bit worried about italics on videos or creenshots, notoriously hard to read. I'd say this for ingame and modern for press kit. But anyway, being a typography geek I'll play around with both and show results in a couple of days.
And, maybe the famous Bodoni or it's clones can make into game (being period staple)? Just as well - unreadable at body text sizes..

    Here we go guys:
HoO_logo_white-grey.png logo with shadows for medium to dark backgrounds. I made some tests and It holds up even against light surfaces:
sea.jpg vista.jpg swamp.jpg jungle.jpg It gets lost in small scale contrasty details (has to do with complicated letterforms), but normally used in screen corner and smaller sizes, shoudn't encounter such situations. Smaller sizes might need not so subtle shadows though. And please critique!

Going back to the main point of this thread, have we settled on which variant(s) of HoO logo to use with screenshots?
And are we happy with the larger PA! logo? Is there anything else anyone needs?

I would like to put together a "press kit" with a bunch of promotional screenshots and stuff like that.
So what kind of watermark/logo will we be using then?

Since last post here, I realised this works better than my last offer for darker backgrounds:
HoO_logo_white.png , for brighter than medium gray standard brown half-wheel is fine. Just no 'white light' I advise. And half wheel is better for screenshots because of their horizontal nature and limited space.
Also, if you get lots of detail in logo location, I suggest just put underexposing vignette on there for it to be seen better.

Related to the recent posts here, what HoO watermark have we decided on to use?
I quite liked the idea of having some text on the shot, indicating what is shown.
If there is no relevant text, we could use the new logo-on-transparent-black version based on @Ashinokami's post above.

We use the white logo for various banners now, so I think it makes sense to use it for screenshot watermarks too. :onya

Yes. My opinion always was: light shadowed for darker backgrounds, coloured no shadow for lighter. I attach fonts currently in my website project, you can try annotating with those. When i'm done with website, i'll be able to think of more unified "style guide" for other materials.

Does anyone have a template for the above two concepts? I am thinking I'd like to start posting regular progress screenshots everywhere.
See if we can build up some interest again, since I think we've been pretty silent recently towards the "outside world".

While I do have a template that sticks our white logo on there, I am thinking I'd like to add some text there some times as well.
Some text explaining what can be seen on the picture, for example. Or perhaps even the HoO website address, so people will know where to find us.

I've uploaded a template that covers both the above overlays. The GIMP file retains the text boxes, so they're fully editable, whereas the PSD file converts them to normal layers.
The template is for a 1280x720 image, but can be applied to other resolutions too.

Sorry. It would help if I'd posted another article by now. :facepalm

I posted a few on indiedb the other day just to get our score back above 200. Just think, we were in the 10k range before we got this all rolling! Those articles have really helped keep the interest up.

Thanks! Unfortunately I use Photoshop, so I can't edit those texts.
What fonts did you use? That way I should be able to redo that so I can change it.

Don't worry about it. One way or another, we haven't been posting many screenshots at all.
What I am hoping to do is to build some anticipation by posting screenshots every day so that people will take note when you post the next article.
We've got quite a lot of shots for now and I intend to start chronological with what we had a few weeks back. So that'll hold us over for a while.

Had to be a bit creative with the fonts since I don't know which ones were originally used. How is this?

I intend to post things chronologically, so people can actually see the improvements made over the past few months.
To prevent people complaining about the older not-so-fancy shots, I figured I'd add the date on them as well so people can SEE it was a month ago.

Additionally, I'm adding our website so that hopefully people will start having a look there for more news and... surprise, surprise... find a Donate button. :rofl

For that text below the "Hearts of Oak" text? Are you sure? I already tried IM Fell English, but it seemed too bold to me.
Actually, the fonts I ended up using (Garamond Premier Pro and Garamond) are still quite "fatty".
I did use IM Fell English for the HoO website address.
